When I was young and read the poem, I took it from a comical point of view. Now that I have "seen my greatness flicker" and "bald spot in the middle of my hair", when I read that poem now, I have a hard time keeping from crying.
I swear, I tried reading this poem like 7 times before I finally gave up on trying to digest it all. I wish I watched the video the first time...incredibly helpful!!!
Thanks! This poem review was amazing! I think most men relate to many parts of this...men are valued based on what they produce/earn/make and that doesn't really happen until we're in our 30s. In fact statistics show men are happiest in their mid 50s. So if we don't work hard enough, we'll end up exactly like this and it's sad that it happens a lot. I'm still in my 20s and though I love poetry this poem is actually terrifying...
I enjoyed your analysis of Prufrock and agree with many of your observations. I do find most analyses of the poem omit the transcendent themes, observations and ideas- though in fairness, you can only be expected to do so much with this wonderful word mosaic of Eliot's, often cited as the harbinger of modern poetry. I think that the poem, in a larger sense, is about our collective, inherent tension between what we choose to see in each other and what we truly are, laid bare; that while we fixate on the mundane minutia of appearance, the larger questions of our intentions ("Should I...?") hover within our grasp. The poem has a wealth of wonderful lines that span the spectrum of absurd humor ("I am old...I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled") to bleak oblivion ("I should have been a pair of ragged claws..."). It is truly a people's poem- most everyone can find something they can relate to within its frame work. I think it is valid to se it as a persona poem as well as a world-weary observation of the frailty ("How his hair is growing thin!"), absurdity ("It is impossible to say just what I mean!") and beauty ("I have seen the mermaids singing, each to each...") of existence.
Wow. that's aweful . He's preety similar to most of the younger generation introvers I would say....but the explanation was beautiful and really understandable ...thank you
Thank you so much. This was such a great video. I missed my class on this poem and I have a test tomorrow. You saved part of me😹. At Least my paper won't be blank now
Lovely analysis, I keep listening to Anthony Hopkins orate it, best version! I however feel like you seemingly left out one of the most important major themes or similitudes here. Unless I’m wrong, but it’s basically the fact that the whole gathering and the event, and therefore the entire poem, is sorta basically; life personified into a tea party or social gathering. At least for him.
Its amazing how I can read this...have no idea what im reading....my mind is blank and when I go to these videos and check it out It all makes sense...I think my imagination is very crappy....or something.
Hello Ms. Katie, loved your narration and to the point explanations. Thank you. Could you please help us with Tennyson's The memoriam? It's super lengthy.
I wonder why on earth do I have to deal with these poems of such friendzoned impotent poets... God this is torture but btw your explanation was TOP FREAKING NOTCH... you explained me within 10minutes what my teacher couldn't for 10months... I hope I write well in tomorrow's exam and then I wish we had coffee spoons together 🤣🤣 just kidding.. nice explain
If you tell a woman you love her you can't will draw it even a second later. I've been there. Many woman I think are in shock. Most are kind. The peach is erotic for young women perhaps.
Hamlet is not brave at all, the whole point of Hamlet is that he is the opposite of brave and his procrastination causes the events. Learn fucking shakespeare before you make outlandish remarks.
