- How to easily repair "fix" holes or cracks in aluminum sheets, plates, tanks, and pots using a quality aluminum brazing rod like Alumite brand. Using a clean stainless steel brush just before initial brazing is essential for excellent results. Not removing oxidation/corrosion will result in a very poor repair.
Alumite & Alumaloy brazing rods BOTH work great. Please refer to the link posted below if you're interested in purchasing these rods:

can you drill through the aluminum that you cover the hole?

¿How strong is that fix against heat? ¿Can it whistand car engine heat?
worked great for me on 1/8" hole in aluminum canoe. I did it in the sun - the aluminum was thin and ambient temp was 70 but the canoe was probably about 100 degrees from the sun. Used yellow propane bottle and the whole project only took about 30 min - including cleaning aluminum, heating and brazing hole, grinding and cleanup. I'm sure with thicker aluminum and/or a bigger hole it will take more time. THANK YOU very much for posting the video!!!!

I did a similar repair several years ago. I preheat the pot (Magnalite) in the oven to 400*, to minimizing the heat sinking problem. Then I brazed the crack. Once finish I placed it back in the oven and turned it off. Let it cool down over night. Still using the pot to this day.
Good video.
Slow heating and cooling is the best method.

I did this to my aluminum boat seems solid and i also coated over it with Flex steel super slick! wish me luck!
Thanks. I learned a lot

Really solid amount of information, clear concise and to the point, didn't leave anything unanswered!Im gonna be using this technique to fill some small 1/8" - 1/4" holes in my jon boat, and sealing my rivets for next duck season. THIS IS WAY BETTER THAN SENDING IT OFF TO A WELD SHOP AND SPENDING $100 USD

Great video! SO helpful. I'm wondering will this repair will withstand the heat from a very hot wood burning stove. (its an old aluminum tea kettle with a hole a little bigger than a pin hole).
As long as there's always something in the pot, it will hold.
Thanks for sharing
Great video. I don't remember seeing this video when I was doing my aluminum boat repair. I'm still waiting on warmer weather to get back to it. Lol.
Hey Nick. Yes, I added this video after the other one was uploaded. Have a nice New Years!
electronicsNmore oh ok. It works better with thicker aluminum because its not able to warp as easily. Have a great new years also!
Nice & good work policy.
yeah i feels good knowing somebody can helpyou
I was going to use the oxy Mapp torch, but the adjustable ts-8000 with propane seems better. Hank would be proud.
thank you...
That is some serious exacting heat application to pre heat and fill that hole WITHOUT burning thru. And the material seemed to magically fill in. looks like you've had some practice.. Very well done. I have a aluminum water tank in my boat that doesn't leak yet but I want to fill some pitting before it eats thru. Going to try and apply your lesson. Thanks
Hi Robbie. Just make sure the area is SUPER clean(bright and shiny), and only apply enough heat to get the brazing rod to melt when touched to the aluminum surface. You'll likely need to use a MAPP gas torch. BTW, nice Gag Grouper. I freedive & spearfish. I've blasted some big ones too in the past.
Thank you for helpinh us
Thanks for the informative tutorial!
Could you please tell me how to handle dents in aluminium pots, such as pots for outdoor activity?
I read the aluminium must be heated as well, so the material can be reshaped. Or is that not needed with thinner aluminium?
I'm pending between dealing with the dent and the dented bottom or going for a fix. I'm afraid I might weaken the overall material.
Thanks alot very useful ideas.

great video , I just thought of one thing, You could reheat the pot or surface with a heat gun .
You solved a problem on which I have been working for three years in less than 6 minutes. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Luke!
What problem did you have?
@@jeevunvethanayagam6536 I have a pair of Hartley 24" Concertmaster speakers which have had the aluminum pit horribly. They are quite valuable and incredibly rare and collecible. The foam surround disintegrated over the decades. This brought them to within 20% restored. Thank you!
Can this be used to repair the aluminum clad bottoms on old 1950's Farberware pots (stainles steel food side, aluminum outside). My cousin had the fry pan for years & it's eaten out in places
I'm glad you uploaded this video I have a big tea kettle with a tiny hole in it I need to repair, before this video I couldn't see anyway to repair it and still be able to heat it.
maynardcat As long as you clean the area extremely well using a stainless bristle brush, and do not apply too much heat, you will be able to repair the area. As you heat, keep testing the temp of the pot by touching the brazing rod to the pot, when it starts melting, pull back and maintain that level of heat! The initial filler needs to be brushed into the surface when molted before applying the rest of the brazing rod. When cool, file, or grind to shape.
Thanks For Watching! Be sure to Share and rate Thumbs Up.
electronicsNmore Thanks for the advise, it's an old tea kettle from the late 40's or early 50's so it's worth saving, and now I can with your advise.
I always heat the Aluminum and the rod at the same time. Its cool stuff if you learn how to use it! One can also make a dam with sheet metal to fill in large areas, I did it to a corner on a timing chain cover. BTW I also can gas weld 308 Tig rod on stainless! I am not a welder!
Very nicely done.. the surface tension of the aluminum keeps it from falling in ?
Pretty sure that's why it doesn't fall in. Thanks for watching!

didn't know that you could do aluminium welding with just a little propane torch very nice .2nd question after sanding down metal for prep can you use acetone for cleaning ? metal to be sure ? by the way liked your vid .
Hi Mario. No need to clean the aluminum with anything but the wire brush unless the metal is oily.
Thanks for watching!
Could you use this pot (and particularly the weld spot) over an open flame (say a propane burner) after it cools and sets? Or would the weld fall out?
My turkey fryer pot has a hole in it and I'd like to repair it. But if I can't use the pot on the fryer propane burner after repairing it then it doesn't help me much.
+Trevor Fisher The moral here is: never get a hole in your pot. Pologise.
Great work 👌👌👌
Thank you!
Looks good. I was looking for a video for repairing a hole in an aluminum pontoon. I think ill practice with a few pieces of aluminum first. Really appreciate the video it was done well.
Part-Time Picker The only problem is you'll need a lot of heat to work on a large, thick area of aluminum......maybe easier to buy a small piece of aluminum plate and rivet it to the boat over the hole with 3M 5200 marine adhesive applied. Fill in the rivets with the 5200 also. If the hole is very small, just wire brush the area really good, wipe down with 91% rubbing alcohol and use only the 5200.
electronicsNmore i use map gas when I am soldering copper pipes do you think that would work? That gets much hotter than propane? Also it only appears to be two pinholes. On the front of each pontoon. Probably from hitting / gliding up on rocks on shore. I actually just thought about drilling the hole a little bit larger and filling them with silicone. It only has to float on top of the water. No pressure really. Any thoughts?
Part-Time Picker Wire brush the area until super clean, wipe down with alcohol, and use the 5200. Press into the holes and smooth with a wet finger....it will last years.
electronicsNmore 5200?
Part-Time Picker Look it up 3M 5200.
are these aluminum rods stiffer than copper rods of equal gauge?
Great job

Goob job man
Hi, what type of rod is used in aluminum brazing?
nice!
Once again, thank u

I plan to use your technique on an aluminum crab pot that has a couple pin holes in it....but what is stopping the brazing rod material from re-melting (then exposing the holes) when I put it on a propane burner????? Thanks for helping
As long as there's liquid inside the pot, it will never melt out when over a flame/burner. :-)
Could u use a similar technique to repair a leak in a pontoon on a pontoon boat?
Aleyia Phoenix Yes. Make sure you can supply enough heat.
electronicsNmore perfect thanks
Onde eu encontro esta vareta de solda, será que os brasileiros terão acesso a esta tecnica . tankyou
Seems to me that you could have saved a lot of Propane by placing the large Aluminum pot in a 500 degree oven first to preheat the whole item. Then it won't suck away all your heat so fast. You do the same thing when repairing Cast Iron items to prevent thermal shock. Cast Iron actually needs to be put back in the oven after the repair so it can cool slowly and lessen the chance of it cracking and spoiling your repair job.
Best Racing Tips Win At The Dragstrip I have used that technique before. It does work very well.

Best Racing Tips Win At The Dragstrip What happens if you have a bigger job do you wanna buy a big oven.
S'all gud man he looks lyk his rich...... with propane gas i mean..
Great...Would this work to weld the new f150 aluminium body ?
Works on all alloys of Aluminum. Thanks for watching!
That's hot ;) Darn it ENM, now I have to order these things... So what if I never get around to using them xD
Fantastic video can i do that on a alloy boat hull that has a few small holes, and what are the rods called you use, what sort of gas is it you use. Thanks farmer
You can repair an aluminum boat hull, but you'll need A LOT of heat to get the job done. Use a MAPP gas torch at very close distance, or an oxy-acetylene torch. If you don't care about looks, you can also take another small plate along with 3M 5200 sealant and rivet it over the area of holes.
Thank you
thanks man

what kind of flame do you use

Can this brazing work on repairing a crack on an aluminum oil pan? i recently bought a car and that owner was using JB weld etc.. trying to repair the crack but it still leaks and load be hold I didn't know so now I'm stuck with the car. Replacing it would be too much so was looking to repair. Thanks!
Hi. Your question was already answered at my other video.
if its for a car engine for what its worth just buy a new sump.
the last thing you want is a repair failing and then engine seizure that could cost 100's maybe 1000's thats if its not your own life as you dont know when the engine is going to seize. believe me i done it myself at 100mph. and ground to a halt when i was on a race track, i just know what to listen out for.
if you don't know what your doing. leave it to a qualified mechanic.
i myself am a HGV mechanic and its not acceptable to be repairing sumps to engines you can ask any GENUINE mechanic the same question and get the same answer.. regardless if its a crack or a hole. its scrap just bin it and buy a new one.
dude if you already have the oil pan out take it to a pro done #makes a great cooking pot#take your time#sick of getting screwed
if the guy doesn't have $300 bucks for a new oil pan don't you think he wouldn't have $300 bucks to take it to a pro? and if he did don't you think he would just buy a new one?? common guys you have brain for a reason.
"Low and behold" is the correct term :-)
What would be the superior gas to use for aluminum?
I was thinking mapp gas, not so hot.
+Craig Stock MAP GAS IS HOTTER. WATCH THE VID. DUMBKOFFS. HOW DID WE GO FROM ALUMINUM WELDING TO EU?
Can you do the same with steel pots? Thanks for your reply
Steel would have to be repaired using a bronze rod. You can see them in my other video below. Thanks for watching!
ua-cam.com/video/hEx89N3f9u4/v-deo.html
Does that work with cooking pots as well? I've some cooking pots I'd like to repair myself but I'm not sure if the patch would hold when using the pot again. Please advice. Thank you very much.
+Linda Alexander
Hi Linda. As long as something is in the pot(water/oil/food/etc), then the repair will not melt out. Leaving an empty pot over a gas flame will melt the repair area once very high temperatures have been reached.
Thanks For Watching!
+electronicsNmore My pleasure. The hole on my pots were luckily on the side not the base, and not as big as the one you fixed in the vid, about a toothpick hole size. I'd like to give this a try but I fear I might be doing more damage to a good pot than repairing it. Thank you for your valuable advice.
If your pot has a hole in it, I wouldn't consider it a good pot.
gud work...

Will the same technique work for screw holes in a vertical sheet of aluminum? And, if so, can the resulting filled hole be filed or smoothed before painting?

I've had some of these rods for twenty years, I was never able to get them to work, I think your video should help, I will probably have to use steel wool on the rods as well, they have kinda turned dark over the years.
Do you think it will work on cast Aluminum as well, that's what I really need to repair.
Robert Salser Cast aluminum should'nt be a problem.
Is it possible to braze aluminum without flux and what type of brazing rod that have used thanks...
Yes, I guess you didn't watch the video.
What is the specifications for the Heat Gun or Touch, what is the Wattage, what is the minimum and maximum temperature ranges, what it the model number and manufacturer, and where to buy the touch? Thank you
This looks awsome but my main question is, is it as strong as aluminum and also why does this rod melt so easy because i thought it was hard melting al with a reg torch
You can melt aluminum with ease using a torch.
I have a question, would heat melt the repair material again during cooking something?
Hello. As long as there is food or water in the pot, not possible.
I have several cracks in my crankcase. I am going to attempt to weld it together with a propane torch. Should I apply aluminum from the inside or outside?
You need to drill the ends of each crack using a small drill bit. Doing that prevents the crack from extending further. Also grind a small depression over the entire length of the crack. The repair works great when done PROPERLY. Practice using something similar first.

I have really wanted to start learning all that I can do with Brazing. I have a question concerning if you could use a square of aluminum and Braze it to another piece of Aluminum, (as if it gluing a patch)?

Is it gonna work for steel or any any other type of cooper or metal? Hey good job! Sir
Alumite rods can be used for Aluminum alloys, Zinc Diecast, Pot Metal, and White Metal. To braze steel, you would normally use a flux coated bronze brazing rod.
Thanks For Watching. Be sure to share.

Same procedure.
What type if material did you used?
Alumite
electronicsNmore hey, Al, you might wanna try alumaybe instead of alumite.
