Audi is the most progressive car maker in the past decade in Germany. Technologically speaking, they've gone leaps and bounds from what they were in the 90s to what they are now. While the Merc has always been a symbol of status, the company is nowhere compared to their presence about 25-30 years ago. BMW took advantage during the 00s. However, the lack of improvement in many areas (interior is the biggest one) has disappointed many of their customers. At the same time an unreliable brand that had sporadic moments of success managed to invent a technology (Quattro) so powerful, that it changed the whole market. The development and the quality, plus the always increasing reliability ratings, makes sure that Audi is the one to set the pace for the next 5-10 years. I try not to be biased, I own a Toyota and generally would never buy a German car, as quality and feature wise those premium brands no longer offer substantial improvements to justify their price tags :)
