Yo, just started off playing and this really helped. I typically play Sage or Phoenix, of which I had issues with both, I basically played them backwards. I'd be more passive with Phoenix and more aggressive with Sage when I didn't need to, so thanks for the helpful tips!
I mean the ones that don’t insta-lock do. I mostly play Reyna and Phoenix and the amount of times I’ve had initiators that don’t get intel, controllers and sentinels not throw up a smoke/wall/cage for cover or teams that don’t follow incase they me to trade is shocking. Some with just bum-rush passed before you can clear angles or flash them in and wonder why they died. And they’re the first to get mad when you die first. I’ve definitely dealt with insta-lockers and they are annoying as hell but there are also people who basically expect they duelists to be two ranks ahead of them so they can get carried and not lift a finger to help them.
In my opinions the main role depends of the map u're playing one. Some maps definetly needs à controller cause without smokes it can be really difficult to take a site and to keep it. On some closer maps like Icebox, i think smokes aren't that important and initiators will be.
I start playing Valo a few days ago and I play as Kay/o, his play style is fairly simple but I have a hard time understanding when to use the flash at times which usually gets me killed
You should be using your flash to either stall enemies on an attack, or common angles where you think someone will be peeking/holding you. You should also communicated with your team when you are about to flash, usually helps with coordinated swings and your low-elo teammates dont get team flashed
I think the most valuable role is still controller though, at least in low ranks, you're literally the only one keeping your team from getting overrun by enemies every round
As someone who almost only plays initiators, initiators are the best by far because of how adaptable they are, the ones who gather information (like Sova, Fade, even Skye and Kay/o) are amazing I love them, and most of them also do awesome on attacking side or defending side
I use kj ult to either force the opposing team to rotate, get easy kills, or force them to rush in. Her kit is really useful and it can help you get better angles
I play viper and a few games ago the whole team is about to push and we say to jett “pls entry”. Their response is “ no I might die” happens every damn game
that's why we need teammates that know how to play there role but sometimes in comp in low rank people insta lock duelist and it becomes a 5 duelist team with no smoke and no initiators to clear sites and take control.
3 duelists is bare max for one team like yoru for info and rotation (flashes too), reyna for making space for teammates to get on site and jett for pocket smokes
as someone who mainly plays sentinels and controllers, being baited by duelists is beyond annoying. if i’m a controller, i smoke for you so you can entry and gain info, but when you ”force” the controller to entry, you’ll have to play the rest of the round without smokes. similar with sentinels, if you bait your sentinels you’ll have more angles to cover yourself when you’re forced to play without the sentinel util.
from like 400+ hours of playing kj and cypher, it feels like senitnels role on attack is only 'plant bomb'. the amount of games my reyna or sage has decided theyre gonna go lurk or watch flank (when my util already is and ive told them they dont need to) is insane
the most important role in the team is all I guess as long they are trust each other and good at coms and they don't be a toxic to each other and knows how they played their roles
Initiators and controllers def top 2 important roles. Both are good on def and attack. One controls maps (in a game about maps and positioning ffs!) and the other initiates and/or gets intel (in a game about finding and killing enemies! lol). Least important role tbh is probably dulelist cus everyone is a duelist. You wont run out of them. Shit even a sentinel thinks they are a duelist LMAO.
I ended up building a server of people to play with and it’s so nice! We all have comms and chat so calls outs are easy. Plus we know they aren’t trolls or toxic
this is really the type of video that helps valorant players. Put on your thinking caps and start making more videos like this to gain respect more in the VAL community
Can you tell me what rank players you are referring to? I am in b1 and spent a lot of time in iron and this wouldn’t help there. Even if you watched every vid they have and put it into practice, it doesn’t matter if half your team has no coms and the other half are toxic duelist insta locks.
I think controller then sentinels. If your first half is attacking, then its controller and duelists but if ur defending its definitely controller and sentinels
I’ve become a solid sentinel/controller player because most of the time my lobbies have people auto lock initiators and duelists and I felt like we would need someone from one of the other groups. I don’t mind sitting back more or watching flanks or even going for a flank depending on the situations that happen during the rounds
At what elo does the duelist start to make space and entry? It sure isn't in plat 70% of the time... I think I entry as viper more often than the insta-locking Reyna or Jett... They love to roam or play for K/D, but once we plant the spike they suddenly start to play super aggressive and get killed.
no THISS, I have to put up my wall, then plant and THEN the jett starts smoking off areas and dashing about. That's why I also love playing kj, because I can have the turret peak for me instead of walking right in while the instalock reyna is off somewhere in mid going to a different site. It's actually so annoying, and when I maybe get the chance to play reyna i dont just run off to mid i actually FLASH for my teamates to help gain entry? My best valo experiences is when a reyna flashes, a jett dashes, instead of marshal-ing mid all rounds and complain when they dont get traded
Once you start playing with a 5 stack. You don't need to be "good" friends, but build up a friendslist. Someone on your team was really chill, they talked clearly and you liked the game, + they played well? Add them and then later ask if they wanna team up later. Always try to stack as hard as you can. You are mostly going to get duelist baiters & wall-licking sentinels with no comms untill pretty high ranks, and even then it's pushing it.
The rule of the instalock Reyna is to enter last and bait your team. Always be the last one alive so you can get your kills up, and then flame your team for being bad.
Scout: Do not stand still and use the environment as an advantage Soldier: Learn rocket jumping Pyro: Spray fire (W + M1) Demoman: Set sticky bomb traps Heavy: Give sandwich to Medic Engineer: Set the teleporter close to battle, dispenser on chokepoints and sentries undogdeable spots Medic: Heal everyone and pop the Übercharge when you're about to die Sniper: Touch grass Spy: Scout has the smallest hitbox, giving you less chance to get hit. Use it to dodge enemy Soldiers and Demos
As a jett main that's what I hate everyone thinks you are a tenz. As a duelist my job is to get you a space if 5-7 sec are not enough for you to get inside the site and you are not trading me then its your fault not mine that I am bottom fragging.
I specifically play Cypher, just very fun to have so much information. Though I will admit I get very hung up on predictability being my worst issue, need to get a little more free-form instead of just following some setups I found online over and over. Sentinel is a great role honestly, I don't have that ability in me really to be all gung-ho blast em and run in style of play XD
duelist is the most important because you can get by without smokes but without someone entering for you against site denial its very hard to do anything and the other team will just rotate to the execute
As a good fill player myself, I got to fill with raze on split my last game and I dropped 30 kills, getting accused of hacking by a delusional sage that went insane throughout the game. The greatest day of my life, back to playing omen every game
6:25 its always difficult when you have that one guy who is top fragging and wont listen to you cause hes simply better and doesnt need his team and drives the round into the ground, but atleast he got mvp
Oh I hate that! It’s always either a Reyna or Phoenix insta-locks. Like I play KJ or Sage and if I notice the other team favoring a side, I’ll be like hey let’s put 3 on A instead of B Then they would be like you’re only 6/5 you can’t be making plays. Then I die from trying To hold a site by myself and we lose
Rule for every role : Duelists : Entry frag. Stop laying back and letting your team do the work, you're the one who needs to take the site and attack. Clear angles and take the site. Initiator : Just scan the site for info. Sentinel : Always hold the flank or hold a choke point. Controller : Play for smokes. You're called a controller, who controls the field. (Note : If you're playing dualist, always play for entry. Don't take the bomb and enter site. Also, to those who are near a dualist, try to trade. Don't bait dualists, it's a waste of manpower
Im always 2 stacking with my cousin, i play controller he plays duelist and always baits me for kills. As soon as i showed this vid he started to not bait me again, thankyou.
When i first start, i play duelist. Then i like to play sentinel, bu got abit bored and liked to play initiator. Now i play controller mostly. I almost never play duelist
for a completely new player, which role would you recommend to try to main at first? (while getting used to the gameflow and getting a general deeper understanding of how things go)
I agree with most of the video, but would addendum that all roles need to remember util usage. Valorant is a team-based game. Most comps work as long as you communicate, support, and execute effectively.
I still like sentinels, the feeling of being able to watch 3-4 angles on your own soothes my paranoia that thinks an enemy could be anywhere and that the game might turn into horrorant with enemies popping out of corners.
I also hate it when my enemies shit on the site I am defending
I like sents cuz i dont have to worry about trash teammates not watching flanks
So as a sent i can do that and not get annoyed by lurkers :)

that's why we need teammates that know how to play there role but sometimes in comp in low rank people insta lock duelist and it becomes a 5 duelist team with no smoke and no initiators to clear sites and take control.
It’s so they can top frag but whine if there are no heals or smokes.
“You have to be pretty selfless and expect to be baited”
As if those instalocks are gonna listen
from like 400+ hours of playing kj and cypher, it feels like senitnels role on attack is only 'plant bomb'. the amount of games my reyna or sage has decided theyre gonna go lurk or watch flank (when my util already is and ive told them they dont need to) is insane
Sentinel/initiator main here (Cypher and KJ. Sometimes Kay/o or Sova) :) ty for this information- ill be sure to put it into practice
the most important role in the team is all I guess as long they are trust each other and good at coms and they don't be a toxic to each other and knows how they played their roles
For me, I feel like playing controllers feel most natural to me. It’s protect teammates whenever util is ready, and after that go crazy.
Shit even a sentinel thinks they are a duelist LMAO.
very helpful video Sgt Frost, im sharing this around.
Sentinels are also amazing on post plant on attack not just flank
Also, if you create a good synergy of all roles in your team, your team could probably be unstoppable.
@@Slykie find a duo
@@rizkys101 I have one but 2 players isn’t enough to win games if your team is a bunch of iron crappers
Bruh if u can't solo ur way out of iron u belong there g just keep practicing u might wanna focus on ur aim I climbed to plat just off my aim
@@neeltrip2443 I hate you for speaking the truth
sentinels are pretty important to keep a site but duelists are important to frag out
its a tie between Sentinel and Duelist for me.
but honestly u need a little bit of everything to have a broken team
I think controller then sentinels. If your first half is attacking, then its controller and duelists but if ur defending its definitely controller and sentinels
I’ve become a solid sentinel/controller player because most of the time my lobbies have people auto lock initiators and duelists and I felt like we would need someone from one of the other groups. I don’t mind sitting back more or watching flanks or even going for a flank depending on the situations that happen during the rounds
I’ll be helpful and try to help my team!
And then comes the slurs
Great video, really just top tier explanations there Frost, nice.
I think Initiator is the most important role idk why but i feel like it when i play Kay/o and breach when our team lacks this role
8:42 i like how they removed kj set up vid when they before they said wider
Love how the duelist ones were "Just stop playing like you're playing"
Diamond usually
Once you start playing with a 5 stack.
You don't need to be "good" friends, but build up a friendslist. Someone on your team was really chill, they talked clearly and you liked the game, + they played well? Add them and then later ask if they wanna team up later.
Always try to stack as hard as you can.
You are mostly going to get duelist baiters & wall-licking sentinels with no comms untill pretty high ranks, and even then it's pushing it.
@snake90hood agreed. I tried omen recently and he's like a duelist version of viper, but no lineups.
The rule of the instalock Reyna is to enter last and bait your team. Always be the last one alive so you can get your kills up, and then flame your team for being bad.
These jett clips were so satisfying
i think initiators are really the best ,, like sova gets the location and even skye,, and i think skye is the best initiator bcos she can also heal
Me and my group we Sometimes play with a sage and skye
Scout: Do not stand still and use the environment as an advantage
Soldier: Learn rocket jumping
Pyro: Spray fire (W + M1)
Demoman: Set sticky bomb traps
Heavy: Give sandwich to Medic
Engineer: Set the teleporter close to battle, dispenser on chokepoints and sentries undogdeable spots
Medic: Heal everyone and pop the Übercharge when you're about to die
Sniper: Touch grass
Spy: Scout has the smallest hitbox, giving you less chance to get hit. Use it to dodge enemy Soldiers and Demos
QOTD: Initiators are definitely very important. Though some duelists to create space on attack are never a problem for me.
As a jett main that's what I hate everyone thinks you are a tenz. As a duelist my job is to get you a space if 5-7 sec are not enough for you to get inside the site and you are not trading me then its your fault not mine that I am bottom fragging.
GOTD: I think all roles are important and a more consistent team is more important. I do think initiators do affect the game the most.
I used to play Cypher until Deadlock came out. I like her more cause it lets me be a tiny bit more aggressive and unpredictable
duelist is the most important because you can get by without smokes but without someone entering for you against site denial its very hard to do anything and the other team will just rotate to the execute
I set up at one point as kj and have 3 others at another point that Swipe the map to where I am and get them from the back. Wins most of the time
I don't even play valorant hardcore, I'm just here because sgt frost's voice is super relaxing lmao
I think The most important Role is Initiator
Whereas Sentinel is the hardest role cause u need so much experience
The part in duelist where you don't get traded sounds super familiar.
Like I play KJ or Sage and if I notice the other team favoring a side, I’ll be like hey let’s put 3 on A instead of B
Then they would be like you’re only 6/5 you can’t be making plays. Then I die from trying
To hold a site by myself and we lose
For someone that loves myself far too much to subject myself to Riot games, I enjoy watching these videos a surprising amount.
another thing with duelist is that if you are a duelist on attack and your constantly the last one alive your probably doing something wrong
definitely gonna use "you're a duelist, your job IS to get baited" in the future LOL
what i learned from this video is that i shouldnt have skipped the minima phantom on my store 😭
Very informative video! Thanks alot! 🤓
The regularly scheduled transition was so smooth
Rule for every role :
Duelists : Entry frag.
JUSTICE FOR CYPHER
*this post was made by cypher main gang*
Im always 2 stacking with my cousin, i play controller he plays duelist and always baits me for kills.
As soon as i showed this vid he started to not bait me again, thankyou.
Ah yes, the award winning game with lethal gunplay and interesting utility, valaorant 0:08
When i first start, i play duelist. Then i like to play sentinel, bu got abit bored and liked to play initiator. Now i play controller mostly. I almost never play duelist
so this confirms i like playing aggressive.. nice
thnx for the tips i will try these
for a completely new player, which role would you recommend to try to main at first? (while getting used to the gameflow and getting a general deeper understanding of how things go)
duelist
Controller so u know how to play site
as a kj main when i play duelist i always check clear corners when i know where my enemies are by paranoia
Thank you!
Resuming: Communicating whit your team, and knowing when to use your abilityes is everything.
0:10 i just noticed the typo in “Valaorant”
This music goes well with the vid , very intense
Atm I'm switching between yoru and cypher depending on the map and using both helps me get my team mates who use them to use them properly
Eversince Chamber has been released I never lost with my squad's team comp of Chamber, 2 controllers and two initiators.
Hmm, sounded pretty much like "All hail the duelists and support them" :D
All feels very Duelist heavy (as in they least the whole game) and people I play with don’t want to dictate the game
I agree with most of the video, but would addendum that all roles need to remember util usage. Valorant is a team-based game. Most comps work as long as you communicate, support, and execute effectively.
Fade? what is she good at? like she can push angles with her prowlers and can check corners with seize but is she more flexable or slow?
I play skye a lot and sometimes killjoy, sometimes I’m more aware of my teammates util, and bots, than they are. Lol
1:34 i do this on every type because i know i suck at aim now but you know what they do sit there waiting but when we defend they push
