Guess the "lack of desire for materialistic goods" wasn't part of his monk training.
Anyone claiming to help people and then interview the Khardashians and use them as a symbol of idealism, should be taken as entertainment. Issue is he is he isn't marketing himself as an entertainer, he's claiming he will help you make your life better.
He's not a bad guy necessarily, but be clear that this is entertainment and then to hawk life products is just bad karma.

To try to understand why Jay Shetty is so successful is both impossible, as it requires understanding the entire, utterly bizarre world of self help, but also fascinating as he crosses boundaries from influencer (eg launching his wife, doing cute couple reels etc), grifter (launching supplement drink), guru (generic Westernised eastern philosophy), clout chaser (relentless pursuit of celebs, chiefly getting in with the dysfunctional Will and Jada Smith family who boosted his fame hugely), content-curator rip off merchant (freeloading cringe videos saying ‘leave a ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ if this touches you!), rider of the let’s-talk-about-mental-health wave, and self help coach. A slightly more nuanced point that might be hard to convey briefly to non-Indians, but it was evident from the very start that he was from an ISKCON background (a big community esp in north London, of whom I know many) and his story was complete nonsense, clearly designed to dupe Westerners. You can find very ordinary guys like him in the UK Hindu community around every corner, so fair play to him that he’s achieved so much with so little. Truly just a modern day version of the fake guru, as you said. I saw a comment once saying that he’s managed to make a multi-million dollar career out of monetising his eye colour…so perhaps that is what makes the difference 😅

As a Sri Lankan Buddhist, i think i can safely say Buddhism and its practice in India and Sri Lanka are pretty similar. I can assure you that becoming a monk is not this easy. You cannot just go visiting a few sites, learn some history about the faith then call yourself a monk and go live in an Ashram. To become a monk you have to go through some rigorous training, learning the history and life of Buddha, gaatha's and prayers, Meditating and reaching a higher level of mindfulness is a huge part of it too. More so there's a huge stigma around leaving the monkhood once you have chosen it. Many don't and those who do are considered never to have truly wanted to follow the path. This man is basically exploiting this faith for personal gain

To call 'ISKCON' an orthodox Hindu religious organisation is a bit of a stretch. For some context, I was raised Hindu and my family was and is deeply involved in the movement. You can think of them as a group of people who have monetised the religion to a scary extent. Their temple for instance in Bangalore looks like a traditional Hindu temple fused with a multinational corporation + mall. About 2/3rd of the building is dedicated to selling you merch, food, and other religious material. (Think Tshirts, Mugs, Cakes, Fast Food, etc.) They also receive donations in numbers that would make anyones' eye twitch.
They aren't orthodox by a long shot. It's more an organisation that has managed to mould Hinduism in a way that is more palatable to westerners. People quit corporate jobs to work at ISKCON and they're taken care of pretty well with accommodations, food, etc. taken care of by the donated funds. So, it's honestly not a huge surprise for me having grown up in that temple attending ceremonies every week since I was kid, to see how it could lead a person down the path of hyper-capitalising Indian spirituality. It's exactly what the temple does and I'll take a lot of heat from other Indians on this but it's true. Jay Shetty has given me that vibe since day one and hard to see how people fall for this crap. I guess if you're dumb as a brick, the things he says sound real deep.
PS: Look up 'Krishna Lila Park' if you'd like to see what I mean about the extravagant spending this temple is involved in.

tbf, they're part of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism sect, which is a legitimate religious tradition. I was part of Iskcon before I left, and there's certainly a need for them to teach the philosophy properly instead of forcing their devotees to do more preaching lol.
Iskcon these days is focusing more on the externals like big temples, huge donations, a lot of "members", diverse projects like farm communities, more outreach etc. Instead, they should focus on making ppl understand Sanskrit and the underlying Indian philosophies.

As someone who's studied South and East Asian mythology for a little while, the second you said he studied for three years and became a guru, I got suspicious. there is so much literature in islam as well and you have to learn the life of the holy prophet and his followers before you become an imam. That takes 7 years before you're considered qualified. And Islam is not as old as one of the oldest religions or beliefs in the world such as bhuddism or hinduism which has so much to cover before you learn everything about the spirituality philosophy. So 3 years sounds like Elizabeth holmes dropping out after a year and saying she engineered a new way of drawing blood 👹

    • @PoPzQ
      @PoPzQ 5 місяців тому +1

At least give people a chance so that you don't miss out on those useful people! There are gurus out there, and it's easy to tell when somebody has put time into becoming knowledgeable about a subject versus idiots who are trying to impress.
Typically gurus will be eager to communicate and help people to fully understand a subject, it should not be confusing, and if it is, it should be backed by congruent explanation. If you haven't watched this video and enjoyed coffees breakdowns, you have not just missed one of those useful people, but also engaging in their content and with their community. Coffee is a guru, and has basically said as much. Gurus just have bad reps, because it's slang for "f*king scientist in _", but for some people, especially for those who have been scammed, he has definitely provided some grand self truths in the old fashioned way, that is a person realizing something themselves, and to help them to be wary of schemes that they may be addicted to gambling on.
I think what you dislike is manipulation. A nasty thing that has also been around for a long time, can and often is used through religion, and is not true knowledge but the projection of it, a sociopathic tendency.

So I tried to argue with them about it because I didn’t do any of it throughout the modules and it was gonna take me forever and then they said that they had to lock me out and I had to pay $500 a month now to get back into the program and finish what should’ve been completed through the entire process to be able to get my exams and all that done. Now I can’t get a hold of anybody. Nobody’s answering my emails or anything. Also, during the process of being in the school, it was very hard to interact with people and get the answers on what I needed to do or had questions if I was in quandary about something. That was supposed to be available and it really wasn’t. I ended up losing $7000.

@@deepfriedokra " credentials is better for scamming rich and educated people. " actually no. his pseudo credentials don't work on most wealthy people, they may work on new money people and the odd straggler here and there - but look man the wealthy don't stay wealthy by falling for this kind of scam every year.
they're faux credentials, wealthy educated people who are truly that can see past that. uneducated poorer people who have no idea how the "rich mans" circles operate and what is bullshit and what isn't bullshit have harder time telling the difference. a person who went to university can tell if someone is just scamming about their academical credentials much more probably than some dude who just barely learnt to read can.
"just trust me bro I'm educated and rich" just doesn't work on the educated and rich as well as it does on people who are envious of the rich and have no idea how things work, what is a reasonable amount of money and what is an exceptionally exceptional amount of money, they have no capability to spot bullshit in that regard. please note that what is rich at a certain point just becomes a thing in the mind and that the people who think they're not rich/wealthy are more at risk of falling for these scams - there's no actual objective line for it when you're wealthy/normal/poor, after all some people eat enough fast food to get to 600 pounds while thinking they did that because they're in poverty.

Also, ISCON is mostly looked at as a corruption of a spiritual organisation for the obvious reasons you have mentioned.
Jay Shetty is not a monk or even remotely spiritual. He's a media genius selling tge nonsense people are eager to pay for. It must be a huge embarassment for the White House) Its amazing what social media skills can build. Gary Vee should interview him 😂

I worked over a decade full time editing for... I'm not gonna say but let's just say it's in the Jay Shetty bubble. All the editors that work for these guys all talk behind closed doors. It's been a running joke for years that Jay plagiarizes. We've been mocking his bold faced plagiarism on social media for years now. I still got facebook DM's of editors mocking Jay from all the way back in 2015. In our editor's group convos we'd always make the same joke, which would be along the lines of popping into the group convo and say something like:
"To be or not to be, that is the question..." -Jay Shetty
    or for another example
"Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You" - Jay Shetty
stuff like that. But yeah, we all knew.

@@gifi4 I may be a little slow, but I'm having a difficult time comprehending exactly what you are saying. Group that I seem to think I was in? I've never worked for Jay personally, the guy I've worked for is a good solid guy and has always been honest about who he is and where he comes from and always been honest with his audience. I don't want to mention his name as not to drag him into any undeserved drama. But two things to note:
      (1) Every single one of these big influencers have entire teams working under them. For every Jay Shetty, Tony Robbins, Prince Ea, Dharr Mann, David Goggins or Gary Vaynerchuk, there is a small army of videographers, editors, social media managers, etc. standing behind them. During the heyday of motiviational influencers, behind the curtain, I was the fuckin man. Every single influencer in that space has worked with me or reached out to me at one point or another. Jay reached out to me before, but to date I've never done a project with him.
      (2) Just like gamer communities, youtuber communities, and so on, those armies of editors, videographers, graphic designers, colorists, sound guys, production assistants, etc. are all very much part of a tight knit community as well. I've been in many many group chats with people who work for (you name it) at one time or another. Whenever there's a team project you'll end up in a group chat, sometimes with close friends, sometimes with brand new collaborators. You network and make friends, that's how it goes in every industry I imagine.
So yes, in those groups, over the years, it has been a long standing running gag, and perhaps low hanging fruit, to make jokes about the integrity (or lack thereof) of certain influencers. ESPECIALLY of the ones that specialize in positivity and motivation. It has been a long long long long not-so-secret in those communities of who are who they claim to be, and who are less than legitimate. And as I mentioned, Jay was the butt of a LOT of jokes about plagiarism.
