Changing the race and/or gender of a long-standing character is not a "superficial detail". Main characters are the story and when you love a story, you usually don't want to see major changes that serve no purpose other than "LOOK AT US, OUR BRAND CELEBRATES DIVERSITY! NOW YOU CAN'T SAY WE'RE RACIST, SEXIST OR HOMOPHOBIC". That is literally the only reason it's done.

Characters do have traits that define them on a fundamental level, but race and gender are rarely among them.
Why do people love Peter Parker? Is it his struggle to balance ordinary and superheroic life? His quippy sense of humor? His deep sense of responsibility in the face of overwhelming pressure?
Those are some of the traits that make Peter most distinct. Him being white and male are very, very far down that list.

@kasplachproductions6198 So Miles Morales should be white in a live action movie? Miguel O'Hara should be a woman? Part of his character is relatability to the audience. I love Miles not just because that he's a great character but also because he's a BLACK MAN. If they changed him to a woman for no reason I'd be beyond PISSED

@@kasplachproductions6198 your proving his point dude, if it really means nothing for the character to be a different race then when people push back and it costs the company billions of dollars then why keep doing it? simple, in the words of sandrocker, its to say look at us, our brand celebrates diversity! now you cant say we're racist, sexist or homophobic.

It isn't just about race, it's about changing the whole image of the character. Why did Captain Marvel need to be a woman all of a sudden? So they could shoehorn that into an all female hero cast later. It's just pandering to the crowds that have the loudest, whiniest voice in social media. Then the company gets a proverbial pat on the back.
The bigger focus is always black vs white, so the point tends to get lost. I don't care about white characters, i'm Nicaraguan. I just don't want all my old favorite stories to change into unrecognizable garbage. Make new stories with diverse casts, i'm all for that.

Fair enough, Sophia Nomvete did speak about being the first black female dwarf. But she's just one supporting actress, and even then it was far from the only thing she talked about. It was largely the anti-woke crowd who made her race and gender the focus of the conversation leading into the show. Basically, this happened: ibb.co/jHW7m46

Okay, I've clicked on your video with other expectations (viewing it from my European standpoint), because wokeness sucks really, but not in the way the commenters your video seem like to have a problem with. 😉
The problem for me is NOT, that there are characters that are of different skin color (is that correct Englisch? I'm a foreign speaker), the problem is that they are not fitting to some stories.
4:30 - Okay, here you disqualify yourself, because that dwarf-actress always emphasized that she's the "first black dwarf", and that is one of the parts people got upset about. Because: If we are all equal, what's the matter?
Politics in media: Totally cool with that! Agenda-politics in a fiction world invented by a guy, who cannot defend it, because he's dead since the 70's? No, would you like your videos to be miss-used in a hundred years from now, in a matter you didn't meant?

It’s the lazy writing which weirdly echos in the real world. The problem isn’t a strong female lead, it’s the puddle deep female lead. If captain marvel was sex swapped to a guy it would still be a poor movie. There’s no arc to any of these strong female lead characters and it kills the narrative. When it comes to the sexuality side, it’s again because that’s all there is about the character. Why can’t the character be bad ass that just happens to be gay? No we get whoa this character is bad ass because they’re gay, it’s lazy but weirdly why punctuated in real life.
When it comes to race swapping characters, just why? Going to choose the little mermaid. Why couldn’t we have had Ariel’s sister be the black girl? Why erase the white girl ( or more important to me, the ginger girl) when we could have had an entirely new story in Ariel’s universe? They did it to be deliberately provocative, in order to gain publicity basically hanging out the poor actress out to dry. She didn’t deserve that.
They’re are plenty of black story’s to be made, black people have a long diverse culture full of story’s tell one of those, don’t tell a white story with a black person.
Lastly. For gods sake don’t make a movie, tell white people it’s not for them and then get pissy when they don’t go see it.

This is not hard yet many folks have difficulty with. Wokeness in itself does not make a movie bad. But putting writing a “woke” story before writing a “good” story is what makes a movie bad.
This is universal. Same can be said for any other “message”. Right or left doesn’t matter. If you are focusing on the “message” rather than the “story”, you reap what you saw. You get a good message and a bad story.

  • @Alphanubilus1

Here's the deal, while activism in film isn't anything new, in fact some of the greatest films of all time were in fact activist movies, such as Gojira (Abuse of atomic power), Alien (Pro-Abortion), and more recently, Zootopia (issues with bias). While these films had powerful messages, it was the characters that had to learn the lesson and not the audience. The films that are being released now have the roles reversed. Activism is at the forefront and because the main character is the activist any disagreement results in you the audience being the "bad guy". Since it was brought up, let's look at Disney's demake of The Little Mermaid. I was a part of a young filmmakers group in 2019 when Disney's casting director announced that they were specifically hunting for a black female to play Ariel. The black film makers in my group were pissed and for good reason. Being black isn't just a color, its a culture and identity. I think The Little Mermaid would have been received different had they told a completely different story with a full on Carrebbean twist. Yet Disney did not do this. There was literally zero reason for them to recast a trademarked character as a different ethnicity just for the sake of doing it. If you look at the arguments against those who oppose this change, it boils down to, "White folk don't think mermaids should be black!" This isn't the point. Nobody other than far-left white liberals, likes it when a well-known trademarked Disney character is race swapped for literally no reason.

  • @tadochov

dude... identity politics is when you proioritize someone's group identity over someone's individuality. and this is exactly what woke people push and what makes these shows and movies so atrocious. if your priority is someone's race, sexuality and whatnot, this will obviously spil over the entire product. making it sh*t in the process. and it inevitably happens every single time.
diversity is a good thing. go for it if you can, but diversity has always been there. there have been people of all races and sexes and sexualities in movies and shows. but it wasnt's the focal point of the show. it was just there and there was basically zero attention brought to it. and that's a good thing.
but now? just listen to any actor promoting their woke product. absolutely nobody talks about the story and characters. it always pushes diversity and inclusivity, modern feminism or modern sensibilities. and people dont like then being shoved down their throats even in family movies or cartoons for kids. and yea, the fact that these movies and shows are borderline unwatchable doesnt really help either. make a product that entertains people for a few hours. not something that lectures and demonizes any opposing view, making wokesters the most intolerant people on the planet...

Genuine question for you, Kapslash. Do you think the movement for wokeness in Hollywood is actually sincere or just blatant pandering? For me I see it as the latter. How else can you explain Disney's wanting the live action Mulan to be a positive message for society but in the credits for the movie they offer a special thanks to a branch of the chinese government that oversees concentration camps for Uyghurs? If Disney believes in standing up for racial inequality, why do they shrink or remove black actors from movie posters for Chinese releases? If Disney stands for LGBT+ inclusion and representation, why do they edit them out of theatrical cuts for countries in the middle east and asia? If Disney cares so much about LGBT representation, why don't they make a movie with a queer lead character? Because then they wouldn't be able to censor/cut/edit them out of the final product, whereas they could do so with an unimportant side character.
They don't care. Being woke is trendy in the united states, and they want to cater to that audience, but only up to the point until it affects their bottom line. The moment their profits or sales are threatened, they will bend the knee to whatever the ideology of the day is.
People see right through this. To me it's nothing more than a device to sell products to consumers.

conservatives/ traditionalists have historically never made good art or have been able to properly critique art. all of their arguments stem from fear of change. good art has always been political. there is no such thing as apolitical art.
the conservative narrative of wokeness being the establishment that must be resisted is a twisted philosophy to make them feel like they are david fighting goliath.
pushing traditional thinking and "keep characters and genders the same" really is a cry for help. it is a want to keep things the same so they can understand the world. but the world is so complex and changing and multicultural, the art being produced will of course reflect that, and thats scary to a traditionalist.

LOL! George Lucas literally made Star Wars because he wanted to bring g back traditional storytelling. Tolkein was a conservative. Shit, Japan is broadly a conservative country and how much great media has come from there?
It is both bigoted and just objectively wrong to claim only Liberals or only Conservatives can make or critique great art.
Not to mention, most of the most vocal YT detractors of wholeness (critical drinker, nerdrotic) arent even conservative in the first place, nor do they identify as such.
Your argument that good art is always political is also simply retarded unless you project and contort stuff to count as political. Road Runner and Coyote wasnt political, but it was great art.
Lion King was technically political, in so far as it was about a monarchy, but it wasnt pushing liberal or conservative politics. It was telling a universal human story about growing up.
The detractors of wokeness are not afraid of change, they despise the specific changes that have been happening because they generate inferior stories, damage old ones and for some of them view the changes as insidious. Which frankly is hard to argue against when you have multiple older male characters dusted off only to be presented as washed up losers again and again. Or female characters who do objectlively evil things but are never treated as in the wrong. Or when you can predict who will be a villain based upon skin colour because it is typically the white male character.
That's not fear of change, that's disgust at a new type of racism and sexism.

    1. changing the races in ring of power not into all white cast, but all the same races for where their from would make a lot more sense for the story because back before travelling got easy most people were born, lived, and died in the same place so seeing a ton of different races in a remote, basically isolated village of humans takes me completely out of it, unlike the lotr movies or GOT for example, I don't care how many different races there are I care that it makes sense for the story that they are there
    2. rings of power was a good example for colorblind casting for you to bring up because its a fantasy world, but they're race swapping historical figures such as cleopatra and jarl haakan SIGURDSSON, a VIKING lord into a black women,( its literally in his name that he was a man) colorblind casting can absolutely destroy movies/tv shows when they aren't based in a world of make believe
    3. I don't like how you said that rings of power wasn't politically driven but the STAR of the show is a mary sue who treats everyone like trash but somehow does no wrong and are only held back by men instead of uplifted in any way, and did you even see the army the fought with, why weren't there any masculine men with beards and muscles fighting, all of them were either women or little skinny guys who look like they belong behind a desk rather than a WARZONE, not to mention the only man worth respecting in the WHOLE SHOW is the villain
    4. the political ideas being forced down our throats ARE the race/gender swaps, tearing down well established male characters just to try to prop up the next minority mary sue, do a bait and switch like in doctor strange, I thought I was gonna see doctor strange be the hero of his own story but instead it was AMERICA CHAVEZ (a minority mary sue, with a lesbian couple for biological parents) AND the terribly written overtly political scenes, basically every superhero from marvel today is either a women, a minority, or a man who is shamed and looked down upon and if it wasn't a big deal then why do all of this and CONTINUE to do all of this even when its gotten a ton of pushback almost every time and lost millions of dollars at the box office, why keep doing it even when its losing hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars in Disney stock if its not a big deal
    5. you said its skin deep a lot in that video but what if it was reversed and the new blade or luke cage was white or barbie was a man while putting down women, I promise you nobody would say its just skin deep and the woke left would go ballistic and say that's racist and and trying to erase black culture so is it really just skin deep?
anyway I just had a bit of time on my hands and I didn't think you truly understand why people (myself included) are so upset, its not because we hate women or minorities or diversity, but because I love lord of the rings, star wars, marvel, dc, doctor who, and Vikings and watching them kill those brands in real time is really sad and i would love to give my money hand over fist if they just focused on writing good stories with the great characters and I.P. titles that they spent billions of dollars to attain

There a few points you didn't touch on. The first is that wokeness in media is as much what they do as what they don't do. One thing you hear people say a lot is could X movie could be made today i.e tropic thunder. Productions have a bigger tendency to play it safe and catering to a group than actually being creative and taking risks, some tropes and genres have been phased out either because they were tired and old or it no longer aligned with their sensibilities. Wokeness is a creative handicap because they limit themselves creatively by excludig certain genres and tropes and favoring other and having basic requirements that can ruin the whole story. Most of the movies are formulaic, they go for the low hanging fruit either in jokes, references etc. A lot of shows and movies feel like missed oppurtunities and when you see those ''specs of dust moments" or superficial changes it just reminds the audience that the film makers are woke. Those "specs of dust" or "superficial changes" instead of being a cringe moment now act as a signature for the woke. So wether or not wokeness played a part in the production being bad that signature will make the audience awaken all their pre conceived notions and wokeness gets blamed.
A lot of things you said were superficial weren't, changing a recognizable characters identity will always be disatrous and when those changes follow a pattern, i.e redheads turning into black people, you start getting labled. Could you imagine bugs bunny any color other than gray or coca cola not using red? Their will always be bigots who oppose the introduction of certain groups regardless of wether it was swapped or not, but as soon as a character gets a major following that identity is locked into the general conciousness.
You made some valid points but notably the fact that very few productions have woke plots and wokeness gets blamed for things it has nothing to do with and you merely scratched the surface on this issue. But overall wokeness is a problem its basically becoming what it set out to destroy. A lot of people forget that early film making was heavily censored and was very prude and conservative. The early progressives had to get smart, creative and take a lot of risks to get their messages across. They changed the rules by getting the audience on their side now they're trying to change the rules in spite of the audience. We used to have a lot of plots with nuance, sure there was a bias but you were left to make your own conclusions. Nowadays plots that make you actually think certain topics are the exception, even if there's a clash of ideals they'll tell you what's right.
An example I like taking is ER versus Gray's anatomy. In one ep of ER one of the main characters witnesses a trans person who was his patient killing themselves, in this ep we are slowly shown why the trans person was depressed and the doctor after witnessing the incident starts questioning his own behavior towards them and as a viewer you are free to react however you want to this you can even self reflect. In gray's anatomy one of the Doctors siblings come out as trans and from the get go he gets told to accept it and be supportive but he is conflictive about it but he turns around eventually. The audience doesn't get a chance to feel the emotional weight of it, we are immediately told what is right and being against it is wrong, Anybody who's ever heard the words cognitive dissonace knows that isn't how you get people to aknowledge new information.

Their skin color doesn't mean shit, as far as show running goes. It's the whole dei agenda that permiates Hollywood in this day and age. We want entertainment over the message every time. If the message is all that is important and everything else is secondary then that is a huge disconnect from the company and the audience.

I think the main problem is, what happened to show not tell?
If a character is a race, gender, different sexuality, just let them be that and let the story come first and we'll see who they are as the story and characters get fleshed out over time naturally.
The problem is that actors and characters in modern day entertainment have bragging rights and constantly want to remind you of their status without letting us see it. It comes off as annoying and dislikable.
This is what's wrong with today's story telling. SHOW DON'T TELL!

Movies nowadays can only entertain me once, not even worth a rewatch. Because theres a subtle message in it. Eg. Shazam Fury of the Gods… while running away from the enemy, one of the shazam boy had to shout to their stepparents im gay! Why? What has that got to do with running away? It sorta ruins the moment and the entire film.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate that you made this video. You raised really good points that seem to be very difficult for many to grasp. Even reading through the "anti-woke" comments here is hilarious. While there are so many lengthy comments that try to counteract your points, they actually end up doing the opposite without them realizing. I think one of the reason why your videos are not getting more views and likes is purely because they don't comply with the algorithms.

Wokeness is being shoehorned into the content as a mechanism to sell the product. But the product itself is already dogshit.
So I can agree that it's not directly wokeness, as if you removed the woke elements these movies and shows would still be awful. I think what's happening is studios are making trash and inserting woke as a way to capture a certain audience.
So is wokeness ruining modern entertainment? Not directly. Shitty writing and execution is killing entertainment. But, they are now relying on wokeness to prop up the shitty content.

Racial diversity in RoP ruined the world-building. It ruined suspension of disbelief and immersion. We're supposed to believe these are archaic societies, but they look like Los Angeles. Numenor is an isolated island, not just isolated but isolationist. For 1600 years. That would mean they're racially homogenous. Yet it looks like they must be in regular contact with the rest of the world because they must have immigration.
Unless maybe the original Numenorean settlers were racially diverse, and the Numenoreans have been practising apartheid? But we know they haven't been practising apartheid, because Tar-Miriel is black even though her father is white. So presumably she is the result of an interracial marriage, which means there's no apartheid, which means that after 1600 years of mixing they'd be homogenous. No matter how you try to justify it, it doesn't make sense, and trying to justify it distracts from the story.
The way they should've depicted racial diversity - if they had to at all - was to make different nations different races. That would make more sense in a medieval world. Tolkien wrote dark-skinned nations, like the Haradrim. Instead, the writers seemed to employ some sort of random-race-generator which didn't make sense and made the smallest village seem like a cosmopolis. This had the bewildering effect of seeming like they were both ignoring race AND obsessing over race at the same time!
An oft-repeated justification for having random black Harfoots is that Tolkien described the Harfoots as "browner of skin". This is often misquoted as "brown skin", but its "brownER skin", with the reference being the other two kinds of Hobbits, the Stoors and Fallohides. The Fallohides are explicitly pale-skinned, so I think it's a stretch to suggest that "browner than the other two" means "black". He could've meant Southern Europeans like Greeks. Also, very interesting cherry-picking, because Tar-Miriel is described as ""fairer than silver or ivory or pearls", yet she was played by a black actress. So are they following Tolkien's descriptions or not.
But regardless of how you want to interpret the colour, the more important point is Tolkien says they're ALL that colour. He doesn't say a random three or four are one colour and the majority are another colour; he says they are ALL browner of skin. So if you interpret that as black, make them ALL black. Commit. What Tolkien /doesn't/ say is they're diverse.
Sophia Nomvete wouldn't shut up about race in her interviews, telling us how revolutionary it was that she was the first black dwarf, like she was up there with Rosa Parks. They invited a backlash. It's like they knew their show was terrible so the used race as a shield early on. There's a reason House of the Dragon attracted far less criticism about their race-swapping: they did it responsibly. They did it to one family so it made sense and actually aided the viewer as a visual reference. Also they didn't use diversity as part of their marketing, like Rings of Power did. Look up the cringe-worthy "superfans" promo, the one Amazon ended up unlisting. They pushed diversity as a reason to watch it.

I appreciate this video, even if I disagree with some of your points. I do not doubt there are many that over embellish the effects of race swapping characters or lgbt representation but in my opinion that is not where people find the problem. I am a white male and very much enjoy shows and movies where there is not a white male lead. That is not even something I consider when watching or reading something. In my own writing I attempt to view my work from the reader's eye and I think that is the heart of the "go woke go broke" problem. A piece of creative work should be attempting to give me a unique and enjoyable experience, not try and change my world view or attempt to monetize my interests and affiliations. Those things are tertiary to the main goal of a creative work in my opinion. So when something is created with is core goal being "lets put a trans person as the main character" it falls flat, whereas a story that was made to be good and just happens to have a trans main character hits different.

Whilst I agree with some of what you say, I think you're ignoring a lot of the marketing when it comes to "the message".
How many times have we heard x film is important because it is the first time a (insert diversity criteria person) directed/starred in a film in y franchise, as if it's vital that every single one meets every diversity quota, and even when x film is, at best, a mildly enjoyable bit of fluff.
The fact is most people neither know nor care who directed a random movie in a long running franchise. They're there if at all, because the franchise has been fun up to that point.
The eternals is a good example. It's an OK movie. But the marketing focused on how amazing it was that Marvel were making a movie with such a diverse cast. So to complain that the reviewers also commented on the diversity and how it added nothing to a very average movie is disingenuous.
Then you get the companies complaining that the audience didn't come out because the movie had a diverse cast.
Examples of this are the recent Madame Web,where one of the cast said that people weren't going to see it because men didn't want to see empowered women. I can't speak for anyone else but the reason that film didn't make my must see list had nothing to do with that and everything to do with the universally bad reviews.
Another example is the recent remake of Charlie's Angels where the director claimed people didn't want to see it because it was a female lead action movie, despite the fact it was a remake of a hugely successful female lead action movie. I did see that one. It was OK, but not as good as the original movie or series.
You can't keep making a big deal about the identity of the people involved in making your average, at best, movies and then complain about reviewers saying you care more about diversity than making a decent movie.
