I read a guy who was on Rodney as air defence officer , saying a hour befor they sank it they flew the black flag restriant , plus the German sailors were signalling we want to surrender , plus also they could not return fire, also they could not steer , I reckon CHURCHILL , said wipe them out coz it will be a big victory , this officer said he never slept a night again peacefully coz of the 2000 sailors lost , he said it was murder a war crime , if the ship is unarmed cannt steer its of no danger , but he said good old British stifff upper lip , blow them up ,
What did you expect the RN to do just let a enemy battle ship go to be salvaged by a friendly vessel or stop and hull a german battle ship full of military men back to britain in u boat infested water?
If I as a soldier wave a white flag, does that mean the entire division has surrendered? Surrender doesn't work like your innocent beliefs suggest. The internationally recognised method for surrender at sea is the "striking of the ships colours", that is the drawing down of a ships battle ensign (flag) from her main mast. Bismarck's battle ensign was still flapping away at the top of her main mast as she capsized at 10:40am on 27th May 1941.
you write all that like the u-boots didn't sail past marooned merchant mariners whose ship they sunk on the regular. also a black flag does not signal surrender. Black flag more often means no quarter.
Tbh it seems like an even bigger victory if you can take the enemy flagship home and trade all the sailors back for your own guys being held as POWs. Imagine the morale blow that would follow the Bismarck being captured and sailed up and down the Thames with a union jack flying
@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 If several soldiers waved the white flag, and you know that the rest of the division all had their hands broken with no way of fighting back, it's not an internationally recognized sign of surrender, but that might at least be cause for a cease fire.
rip bismarck :(
Thank you for the upload.
at least the british handled with them well cuz i'd rather die then become a prisoner of war in germany during ww2
Far better than being taken prisoners by the soviets
I would worry more about being captured by the Japanese
