  • Were you aware that to film or take pictures at a National Park to post on social media that you have to apply for a permit and pay a fee? (If you make any money at all) We were completely unaware of this until just recently. It sure hurts small channels such as ours who do not make much money on our videos. We want to know your thoughts about this as well. We also want to know your thoughts on what can be done about it if anything.
Thanks for joining us today and listening to us vent 😅☕️

Absolutely Terri and Keith. The bureaucracy class needs an attitude adjustment. We pay their bills. They work for us.

    That’s terrible!!!
National Parks should be ashamed of themselves.
Hopefully they will undo this wrong.

As they say in the movies, "Come and get me coppers". They'd have to sue me.

We heard that there’s a class action law suit against them and the Supreme Court said it was unlawful for them to charge a fee. They stopped it for awhile but started back again. It’s just ridiculous

That is crazy. Think we need to get with our congressman/woman and have that adjusted because so many people just want to share their lives visiting our amazing parks.

Yes. I became aware of this a few years ago. A major YT travel channel (Kara & Nate) we're the first ones that I'm aware of that we're fined. A substantial sum! They weren't aware of it at the time. There's no way the fee's make sense for a small channel. That being said we still film in them, but DO NOT monetize the videos filmed there to be safe. The law is murky and I've heard that they (K&N) never had to pay the fine. But, they still don't go back to National Parks anymore and that's a shame. Many people (like us) plan vacations based on YT videos.

That is crazy. I can see, like you said, paying a one time fee for a lifetime but a fee daily is ridiculous.

To me this is about bureaucrats thinking that they are protecting their land from those who pay taxes and the owners of the land, as in Americans. Let that sink in.

@Solvet862 agree. We, as tax paying citizens, are owners of the parks

Been fighting this same problem for a year. Lots of nice National parks within an hour of me I'd like to show people. Petersburg National Battlefield, Appomattox Manor etc. all part of the park service with different fees. Very confusing and cost prohibitive. It's an over reaching rule that harms the small channel. The National Forests are subject to the same rule being a part of the National Park System. Just a shame. Happy Mothers Day. Take care. Steve

That is crazy 😱 I knew about it for a while now. I didn’t know the fee was so high. That’s why I stopped going to national parks for video. This is so wrong we pay for those parks. Technically even if you’re not monetized it’s still against the law.

    • @RetiredLovingIt

That’s crazy. We own those parks. This is OUR country! What a rip. Leave it up to the federal gov’t to make life, to make living our lives and sharing our experiences a difficult proposition. Did they also want to tax the air you breathe in Mammoth Cave? Ridiculous. Anyway. Happy Mother’s Day, Terri. 🎉☕️

The government no longer works for the people. It's a giant organism that constantly needs more food (money) to support itself, not provide services to it's supposed clients (citizens). How do you stop it? I just can't see a way.

I watch a lot of videos of the Smoky Mountains. A channel called [Smoky Mountain Family] has a few videos on this subject with links to a class action lawsuit you can join. I'm sorry I can't locate it, but it is Smoky Mountain Family, the Dad Eric stays on top of this issue.

It doesn't look like they're doing a good job stopping anyone. 😁 I see tons of national park videos posted daily on UA-cam. Just try filtering the search term, and you'll see plenty. I highly doubt those monetized channels got a permit.

So Sorry that this has affected you plans. You will figure something out.
Unfortunately commercial filming requires a permit. Oh, turn off the monetization for your fort video and you should be ok. This is a major reason why we will never monetize. Because we are not monetized we do not fall under the commercial filming. We are like the other millions of people posting their vacations on UA-cam. We just edit our adventures. There are also liability issues is you are monetized and you film on private property. If you have a drone and are monetized you will have to have a 109 drone pilots license to put your footage up. More reasons not to monetize for us. This issue blew up in the fall of '22 when a ruling was overruled. A lot of the UA-cam Channels that film in the Smoky Mountains National Park were putting out a lot of info.
If you want to truly film in the parks I suggest you look into a second channel that is not monetized and sells no merchandise.
We continue to film in the parks and have many adventure queued up in editing. In fact, we just got back from the Badlands and it is a beautiful place.

    • @RetiredLovingIt
      @RetiredLovingIt  4 місяці тому +2

Agreed! There are pros & cons to being monetized for sure!
