    Really appreciate the information, Mike. These cars can look beautiful when finished correctly and I feel so sorry of what happened. Know it was years ago but I'm only seeing all these videos now. Think I will make a few videos on my progress although my task is nowhere near your accomplishment.I will see following your progress and very useful tips. ll the best.

    I referenced this video long after watching it so I could get the parts numbers and business to purchase them from. Thanks for including all of the information to help with my '85 380 SL

      Thanks for your comment. If your repair doesn't work out aftermarket parts are readily available. See apaindustries.com/parts/11486 and apaindustries.com/parts/11494 in the USA and in the UK www.theslshop.com/parts-shop/mercedes-benz-sl-slc-107-left-front-wing-moulding-1078800182.html etc etc Mike

    Thank you very much, Mike, that was most helpful. Do you have a series of videos about all the work you did on you SL, including how it looked at the beginning / end? I love seeing all the issues you have overcome.
    Any videos on tightening the suspension firmness?
    Thanks again.

      Hi - I suppose the playlists tell the story of how I have worked through a car:
      Here is the car I am currently working on from the time I picked it up:
      ua-cam.com/play/PLONqXqFnLGrj_43hryTJwAkHRY2X9z4ix.html
      Here is the the 280SL that was sadly stolen just after I finished it:
      ua-cam.com/play/PLONqXqFnLGrj9obbaEOlO0G7IaceJ7yPF.html
      The suspension firmness will be primarily determined by the strength of the coil springs....in conjuction with the the sub frame bushings and engine mounts. All these are covered in order in the playlist above. Mike

    Hi Mike,
    Thank you for all your videos on your SL, I am also doing many similar jobs on my '84 380. Did you find any videos about how to actually remove these side mouldings? I'm worried I'll damage something by just prizing it off. Thanks again from New Jersey.

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  4 місяці тому

      Hi - the three side mouldings are generally help on by a clip (0039881078) at the front and a plastic nut (A1239901750) at the back. The nut attaches to a special fitting (A1076900071). On the front fender and the the door moulding there are a series of pop our rivets.
      In my experience, what usually happens is that most of the above hardware is either missing, has been replaced with something non OEM or is rusted solid. Sometimes, people actually glue these trim pieces on and if you look at 6.3 in the video below, you can see what happen when you try to remove a glued piece:
      ua-cam.com/video/Gnv0mrqavno/v-deo.html
      So....for-warned is for-armed. If you know how they are supposed to go on and off, there is less chance of damaging the car or the mouldings when removing.
      1. Alway ways remove rear nut first if there is one.
      2. Pull the rear piece with the screw thread out through the hole and start popping the rivets from rear to front
      3. Final front clip is pushed forwards, tilted up and slid backwards to remove. Have a look at the part numbers to visualise.
      Incidentally these trim piece are still available from Uro (apaindustries.com/catalog) along with a ton of other SL parts. Just find the part at the link above and copy and paste it into Rockauto,com.
      Good luck.
      Mike

    Good video. How do you remove the long trim pieces from the doors? I'm trying to remove mine.

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment. The long trim pieces SHOULD be held on with a clip at the front (see time code 12.13 in video) and a screw at the back (see time code 11.44 in video) and a series of push fit clips along the length of the door. Sometimes people clue these on which makes it harder to get them off. Mike

    Hi Mike,
    Thank you for the detailed videos. Any idea if I can purchase the hardware, grommets, metal clips from any shops here in USA?

      Hello - you should be able to get the parts from your local mercedes dealer. At the end of the video, all the part numbers are shown and you should be able to type these into ebay.com and get them. I have a great friend in LA and lived there for over a year. It is MUCH cheaper getting parts such as the soft top roof and leather car seats etc in LA than the UK....Good luck with the search for parts. Mike in UK

      Thank you Mike. I didn’t think about trying EBay; so used to Amazon.
      Local MBZ Dealers said no as the its a ‘79 450 - I guess too old to carry some these items. Keep up with the videos.

    At 11:40, you didn't show you the fitting screws in? Is there a nut that needs to go on the inside of the door?

    • @MikesMercsandothercars
      @MikesMercsandothercars  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment. The front of the door trim (nearest the engine) clips in and the rear part has a nut. This nut is not behind the door card - From memory its just behind the rubber door seal. I'll shortly be doing this job again on the red project car and will make sure I show this bit more clearly. Mike

      @@vickg No - the nut is not behind the door card - it is behind the rubber door seal below the lock. I just looked at my gold parts car, and on that 450SL it is a plastic nut (to avoid scratching the paint) Mike

    When you attach the screw part what is on the other end a nut or some washer or grommet to cover the metal hole where the screw goes in? I am replacing the right front fender side moulding and the replacement part didn’t come with a nut or anything to screw onto that bolt. It’s the square hole, then the red plastic grommet hole. Then another hole with nothing. The others on mine are rusted and corroded away and one feels like a square nut on there and the others I can’t really tell.
    What do you think I should do?

      Hi - here is a link to the Mercedes picture showing what is on the other side of the screw thread:
      1. First you have a chrome washer shown as part 101 on the diagram and Mercedes part number "N009021004207 "
      3. Then you have item 104 - a standard nut, part number "N000934004006 " I must confess, I always thought that was supposed to be a plastic ...but maybe I'm thinking of the rear trim...
      mb-teilekatalog.info/view_SubGroupAction.php?lang=E&mode=BM&class=1&aggtyp=FG&catalog=048&model=107042&group=88&subgrp=015
      I hope that helps. The door trims have an additional plastic washer.

    • @MikesMercsandothercars

      If you turn on the wipers and there is no mechanical noise, there is a good chance that you have an electrical problem. First thing I would do is check is the fuse. From memory, getting to the wiper motor to check the connections and the motor is really tricky. I'll have a look on my Sl and get back to you. Mike
