As I recall, the Lions had their defense on the field instead of the special teams squad when Raymond scored that 90 yard return because the Titans had 4th and 1 and they thought they might try to fake the punt and go for it. So...that potentially makes things for the Titans look even worse as it was the defense, not the coverage team blocking for Raymond. Wow!

Goff's idea of taking it easy is letting the running team score 50 points. This team is insane.

What makes this even more unfortunate is how good of a punter Ryan Stonehouse is. Titans special teams unit is a mess.

In 1988, the 49ers were playing at Atlanta. The 49ers scored a TD and on the ensuing kickoff, the Falcons ran it back for a TD. The Falcons were stoked, their fans were stoked, the place was going crazy. The Falcons kicked to the 49ers who ran it back for a TD. It was like poking an over-inflated balloon.

I thought you had to be exaggerating, so I went to Pro Football Reference to check the stat lines. You weren't exaggerating.
The Lions had 61 net yards passing plus 164 yards rushing for 225 total offensive yards. They had *262* total return yards (72 kickoff return, 190 punt return). Not to mention they got 4 TDs and no INTs with those measly 61 passing yards. The Titans had 416 total yards but committed 4 turnovers against none for the Lions.
This is almost as crazy as the Steelers-Texans stat line from 2002 (Steelers outgained the Texans 422-47, out-returned them 135-83, out-converted them with 24 first downs against 3, hogged the ball for 39:41 versus 20:19, gave up only one scoring drive - a FG - which covered *negative* eight yards, and lost 24-6 because three of their five turnovers were returned for TDs).

Nothing sums up the difference in rosters than special teams. I remember when the LOB era Seahawks were forming you could tell something special was happening cause the hawks started destroying people on special teams every game. It was like oh shit, we have some crazy depth and talent on the team right now.
    That’s the Lions right now.

One of these advanced statistics dudes needs to create an Expected Net Punt Yards staristic based on gross punt yards, distance from the sideline on landing, and hangtime. Basically, "here's what the net punt yards would have been for those punts with an average coverage team against an average returner". Because obviously factors other than gross yards are important, but net yards just absolutely screws a punter whose team fails him.

There's a reason why the spread was 12.5 points. Though, what's really crazy is the spread went down to 12 eventually... which means a lot of people picked the Titans.
