Thank you for sharing this interesting 1977 gymnastics meet with United States & Romania. I love seeing these older competitions to remind of us of what gymnastics was like back at that time: Romanians, Soviets dominated the scene. So nice to see, thank you.
Here's my take on why NC won - she clearly outperformed the other athletes with her beam routine, including a beautiful front aerial (probably best ever in gymnastics), very nice side aerial back handspring, solid two flip flops after the back walkover, and stunning stuck double-full dismount. I kind of expected a 9.95/10.0 but 9.9 is right on. NC took the lead at this point for a reason - she's clearly the better gymnast. Gymnastics is not just about skills, but execution of those skills, including fluidity (keeping the flow of the exercise going). EE did a really nice job (amazing back tucks) but she doesn't execute skills or flow quite as well as NC - hence the score difference. DT did a really nice beam routine, but there were bobbles in the routine, 3 steps on the landing and the double-full didn't make it all the way around.
This was such a different time. They openly talk about weight like Nadia was obese or something! Knowing that Cathy Rigby had an eating disorder, it made me sad when she said a hot fudge sundae shows and that the Romanians were only allowed yogurt and an apple while on tour! 😞 Makes ya wonder how they had any kinda energy or stamina for gymnastics! That lack of food can possibly account for the emotionless expressions. They were probably so damn tired and run down from not eating that they didnt have the energy to smile, even after a perfect routine!! So sad!!!! 😞 However, I love this balletic type era! I wish we could take the flow and choreography from some of these 70s beam and floor routines and add in the skills of Simone! Now that would be a sight to see!! 😁
And to think... No springs under the floor. It wasn't until 78/79 that coils were put under the floor. 4 inch coils were put, which allowed for so much more difficulty. The coils now in 2019 under the floor are 8 inches. This is why we are seeing such difficult moves now as opposed to the moves in this video.
Thank you for uploading this. I've never seen this competition. Nadia was so tall, poor girl, that only shows how amazing she was. I will never really know why she quit Bela Karoly. In 77 she was good, as she won AA Europeans, but 78 was a lost year despite the wold gold medal in beam.
They made her train in Bucharest, unfortunately it wasn't her choice. You could tell how much it affected her, she was just not herself in 78. Yes, she was very tall for a gymnast! She grew REALLY fast, I'm sure it was incredibly difficult to adjust to her height. I believe she was 5 foot 5 by 1979, even talker than Svetlana Khorkina who everyone thought was an absolute giant lol.
It is obvious that the extra weight and height prevents Nadia from doing all she could do a year earlier. . The advantages of being shorter are greater strength to weight ratio, greater power to weight ratio, faster rotational capability, greater agility, and greater balance.
Great to see Nadia...she has gotten very tall...looks like more than 2 inches! Must be tough to adjust to your legs getting longer and trying to do gymnastics...wt gain is all height!
+MartinJuan61 - DT was an excellent gymnast, and she probably was underrated at times. However, in this meet, it is very unlikely for someone to win especially when they touch their hands on the mat at the end of a tumbling pass - no matter how many double-fulls they do. NC won this meet fair and square, and really pulled away from the competition with the near perfect balance beam performance.

Emilia Eberle's floor routine was so fun to watch. So unusual.
I agree with the commentators-- Eberle was incredibly poised on beam. And gosh, they were so excited about that crowd!! Really cool.

She didn't quit her coach. The Romanian dictator moved her against her wishes.
