I was an augmentee right after 9/11 before they made the huge rush in 2002. When then FAA still ran the program it was awesome, 4 day work weeks, 1 day training, 3 days flying then 3 days off. Was an enjoyable schedule. Then DHS came about, transferred from FAA to ICE and those horrible people they hired from the Secret Service ruined the gig.
I dropped out of the latest hiring push for the FAMS back I February for personal reasons, but before I made the decision I was really concerned about being away so much because I am a single dad with a 4 year old. As much as I would love to do be able to travel and start the retirement clock, I just can't stomach being away so much during these years of her life. I've also heard they don't get treated very well and that the mental strain of the schedule breaks people so completely they hallucinate and occasionally murder/suicide.
If there is a problem in the airport the jurisdiction falls under the local police. The Air Marshal may detain but more than likely the airport police would be the arresting and charging agency. Now there is a very few Air Marshals attached to the JTTF with the FBI. They are the only Air Marshals who do investigations. The firearms training is not as hard as it used to be due to the fact they dropped the original Tactical pistol course. They dropped it because well over half the applicants were failing. This job sounds great looking in from the outside. But if you are in the inside you will lose your mind. Living in hotels away from your family is very difficult.
This guy is sarcastic as hell 😂...I know the job has its cons but I think the pros outweigh the cons in the long run. I think with the opportunities to advance and move up the ladder or lateral to another agency is what makes this job worth it.

Yes depending on the agency you can transfer with out going through training again but, some agencies you have to go through their specific training academies again.
Hello , how can I join the Federal Air Marshall’s , if I’m coming in from a Security Background, like Commissioned Security Officer , & Personal Protection Officer
Thank you for providing information on this Federal career. Any idea when they will start pushing for new hires in the NY-NJ-CT area? Preferably CT, although I know that probably only includes Bradley.
@Dust Devil Rage Hi there I applied to the announcement in October and heard back from them. I'm getting ready to take the Air Marshal Battery exam. I wanted to have an idea of where on the SV G payscale they would most likely start me? It's such a broad payscale and I would have to start at the absolute bottom of it. I also heard that Air Marshals don't get pay raises as often as their counterparts (1811s) on the GS payscale. Is this all true?
@@jc6812 The pay system has been recently bounced around between TSA and the congress and senate. Legislation was in the works to put TSA on the GS system, it passed in congress but failed in the senate due to certain senators believing that putting TSA on the GS system would lesson TSA’s “flexibility” to handle certain things. However TSA itself proposed a pay system similar to GS, and about the same amount of money, using step increases similar to GS, and that did pass. In the past G band was 1 year and H band was another year. So after 2 years you made it to I band, a point in time where you are also off probation. I have no idea if G and H bands are still 1 year each with this newly proposed system. But you can expect a similar step system like GS come this July of 2023. Once hired you will not earn LEAP, Law Enforcement Availability Pay, until you have finished training and are a full fledged federal LEO. However I have heard horror stories as of late of guys finishing training, getting their badge and gun and still not earning LEAP pay due to some clerical error. Yes you will be automatically DQ’d from most..if not all sworn LEO and especially fed LEO jobs.
