Absolutely wonderful instructions! I’m building an 8’x12’ shed right now and our next step is putting the t-1-11’s up. This video is a godsend! Thank you!!
My house actually has this type of vertical siding, which is nice because the existing shed and dog house matches. So my additional sheds will match also. I like the look of this siding on my house, much better than the horizontal siding that overlaps. The flat look is very nice and clean looking, especially with the light tan color that I have, with brick accents.
Nice work! To get some additional water proofing, put some z-flashing above the base PVC trim to divert any water that may make its way between the siding and the trim
This also makes it look very professional. I just put my z-flashing on, yesterday, and it totally changed the way it looks. I know, I know, it's just gonna get covered up, haha, but it still looks good. 🙂👍
if the siding overlaps the foundation then the water can be diverted but siding like this shouldn't be close to the ground as it absorbs water (see install instructions). flashing is the "proper" way but if it's just a shed you could probably get away with house wrap and caulking
For the window - if you’ve got one - it’s easier and even more accurate to just hang the siding. Then, drill a hole, and cutout windows, doors, etc. with a flush-cut router
I wished that this was available when I did my shed roof makeover on my well house. I made it up as I went along and fell off of some scaffolding along the way. It's still holding and there's no mold growing due to gaps, so I'm proud. You are speaking waaaaay too fast for some of us older folks. Please don't forget that women like to DIY too and wouldn't it be great if there were a set of tools that were female friendly??? Business ideas anyone?
@@dmitryshevchenko349it’s a pilot bit. Literally. A pilot bit has a drill tip to drill through the panel and then rides along the frame like a flush panel bit. It does two jobs with one tool.
it is not stupid to use screws to start. if you ever have a mess up at least you can take the panel off without trying to dig them out with a cats paw or pry it off with a crow bar. it allows for adjustments.
Question on the tall vertical siding, what do you do on the seams? I used 4x8 sheets and I have a top seam, do I need to treat the edge? Also, your trim, can I rip 1/2 inch plywood and paint that for my trim. Should I use caulking on raw seams? and cover with trim?
Great build! Question about using the Smartside panels horizontally on the front. I'm building a shed now (not as nice as yours) and was wanting to do that on one side. My understanding is that LP says not to do it. Have you noticed any adverse effects? Leaks? Again, love the style of instruction. Subscribed.
Hi - appreciate you watching and the subscription! I read that on the installation instructions as well...but no, no adverse side effects so far. I'm sure it has to do with the ability to "wick" moisture - so as long as you have a sufficient overhang, I would think you would be OK.
The strength of the LP smart siding 4x8 sheets comes from installing them vertically. Also water build up in the grooves could be a big problem if you live in a wet climate.
8:18 Hi Andrew! My mom and I are building your 10x10 shed and bought your plans. We have installed all the smartSide panels and my question is for the front. We followed your directions for the horizontal pieces but the 2x4 top piece seems to not line up well with the top sheathing because of the underlament piece at the top. The top sheathing is not flush with the smartSide panel. Did you cut off that underlament part of the smartSide panel at the top? Thanks Andrew!
God bless you man, do you have any idea why the outside corners are on flushed, where the 2 sheets connect one of them pops out a bit more than the other.
Andrew how is your LP holding out with the ledger PVC under it? Any issues, i want to do the same to my shed. But retrofit after the shed was installed. So to keep the groundhogs from going under.
If it’s foam insulation you just place it between the studs, fiberglass style is usually nailed between the studs after siding is installed, before the interior finish wall is installed.
Super video Andrew! You just keep getting better and better with each show. I don't know how you haven't reached 100K yet. Cant wait for the floor treatment; its one in my future plans for my screen porch. Pat
On the LP Smart Siding Website, they say to leave a 3/8" gap between the panel and the trim at the bottom. They also say to put in Z Flashing underneath the panel and over the trim. They specifically say not to caulk or seal any edge with flashing. The Z Flashing with the 3/8" gap will allow the water to drain and will prevent water damage to the siding and the trim.
@@AndrewThronImprovements so here’s my deal, I’m making 22 8’x10’ dog kennels for boarding. So the inside will be insurlwted and finished off . Would you still think I don’t need osb and tyvak?
Hi Geni - it sits on a slab and then has a pressure treated lumber base. Additionally, the roof has an overhang on all sides - so it really doesn't get wet. I hope it lasts 20 years!
@@KevenDRayne i like to use rim board and no never calk it that will hold the water in. Lot of people use no rim but i had a shop that i resided years ago and after 10yrs the bottom of the LP rotted out . You should be ok as you have a good over hang. Also when you make cuts to LP you should reseal with primer to stop water from wicking. I am just now finishing up a tiny house i might make a video about all the steps.
Very helpful series! Just a quick question, have you had any issues with the PVC ledger boards warping? I doubt the black paint is "vinyl safe" and I ignored that once and all of my trim warped in the sun to the point of pulling out 15 gauge trim nails 🫤
I appreciate that you point out your mistakes. As a new DIYer, it takes some of the pressure off.

I do not like the z channel look on the building. It looks unfinished. Is there anything wrong with just abutting the PVC ledger to the LP?

So. So. And so. So. Good demo. So. None-the-less.
I like the horizontal method.. not sure I've ever seen that. Looks sharp, and good idea! I may use that idea
What state you live in? Just wondering because in California that’s the only way I’ve seen this siding installed.
Washington. With the seams horizontal?
Beautiful work
Great place to paint sheets grass grows lawn mower mows painted grass goes!!😂😂
High quality content here!!
You used a framing nailer instead of a siding nailer, and it did not split the product?
Is this the usual way to install t111? Do you just caulk the nails, I was thinking it required using staples I'm the seams or something
If I’m insulating a small outdoor structure like a sauna using this siding, should I have Tyvek over the studs?
This is a great question and something I happen to be doing I hope you get an answer
Waterproofing? Will it stay dry?
Love it❤

Is there a particular type of blade for circular saw you recommend for the Smart Siding panels?
How is the pvc ledger board handling the black paint? Any issues with it?
Need a shed like that to store my motorcycle.👍
dumb question, but would it be possible to install vinyl siding over the t1-11 siding?
Hey Man, great video ! I am interested of putting this exact build on my backyard. Can you give me a estimate as to how much all this costed ?
Great video...this best tutorial video i like this
Haha the nails vs screws battle 😂
This is the best tutorial on UA-cam! Thank you for your good explanations!
I appreciate it! Glad it helped and thanks for watching!
Should a weather resistant barrier & wrap be used prior to placing T1-11 or LP Smart siding
yes
What do you fill the nail holes with?
Do you caulk the seams?

Have you done any 12x16 sheds with single slope roof?

I don't see on any of these videos how you framed in the triangle section on top of the side walls. Am I missing it???
It soo beautiful
I was told that TI-II has no shear strength and cannot be used alone? Has to be installed over OSB?
For windows just use a router with flush cut bit, this way you can just go over all the openings and get a super neat cut !

Do you caulk the bottom of the siding or leave it open so water may get out?
On the LP Smart Siding Website, they say to leave a 3/8" gap between the panel and the trim at the bottom. They also say to put in Z Flashing underneath the panel and over the trim. It's NOT a bad idea to use screws for your first few fasteners in case you're not square and need to make an adjustment.
I totally agree, that's a great idea in case you need to adjust before commiting with nails.
Do you have to fill out nail entrance points w some caulk?
Only if they go too deep. If they are flush with the siding, you should just be able to paint them.
Are u using frame nails 1.5” nails?
Why do you prefer LP smartside ?
What CAD software did you use to design and produce the 3D images of the framing?
Hi Joe - I used SketchUp
@@AndrewThronImprovements Any special plug-ins?
Can you install the smart side panel sideways instead?
LP Specs say no. Water drainage.
They have Lap Siding to have horizontal seems.
Which program do you use for your cad drawings?
Nevermind.. just saw the sketch up logo!
Would you recommend putting osb and tyvak wrap? Or is that not needed
It’s not needed, per se..but it would give you a more robust (and expensive 😬) shed. Good luck building
