  • Bike tires can handle quite a range of pressure, so how much air should you put into yours? In this video, Katie talks you though why you might choose to run your tires on the low end of the range and why you might want to add more pressure. Check out the video, and if want to learn how to choose the right size tube for your tire, check out that video: • What Size Bike Inner T...

    This is by far the clearest answer that I have come across on youtube. I started commuting on a CCM. Excel 26x2.10 tire size and after after almost 5 months, I found 55 psi ( for recommended range on tire 40-65 psi) to be the ideal tire pressure, which is right around the middle of the recommended values. I weigh around 85 Kgs/ 187 lbs and my commute is on roads and sidewalks that are not exactly in pristine condition. The only flats that I had (2 over a weekend, ) were rim flats and I fixed that issue using electrical tape on the rims. I did watch your video months ago and I posted this comment because my experience with the tire pressures attests to what you have mentioned in your video.

    One more thought for those using inner tubes: Some tubes come in overlapping diameter options. For example, on my road bike, I like a 25mm tire width. My favorite tubes come in 20-25mm or 25-32mm options. I could choose either, but choosing the larger (25-32mm) is always better because the butyl won't be stretched as thin as the smaller tubes when they are inflated inside the tire. This means they will last a lot longer and be much more puncture resistant.

    • @saintless

      Car tires are wider, thus a lower pressure.. the narrower the tire the higher the pressure, for the most part. Car tires also do not use tubes... tubeless bike tires run lower pressures than the types with tubes.
      Optimal bike tire pressure is as low as you can go without getting a pinch flat; over inflating doesn't make you go faster it just makes the ride more harsh. Katie is actually repeating a debunked myth.

    Hello and thanks for the question. For smooth city streets, we suggest a PSI on the higher end of the range for your tire. If the streets are rough and bumpy, go lower. Your bike pump should have a gauge on it showing the PSI. For more on this and lots of other bike info, check out all our Expert Advice cycling articles at: www.rei.com/learn/c/cycling

    Nice video. A road/gravel bike companion video would be nice, although a lot of the principles are the same. A couple thoughts to add: 1. Rider weight (and load weight if you have packs on) is a HUGE factor in ideal tire pressure. 2. Rolling resistance benefits of high pressure are usually less than the benefits of having some cushion in the ride - lower rolling resistance is meaningless if you lose forward energy bouncing vertically off every little pebble in the road. Lower pressures are often faster than high pressures for this reason. 3. Some rims have a maximum recommended pressure, which may or may not be over your tire's recommended maximum pressure. 4. The tire manufacturer's recommended pressure range is usually well within the safety range; you can probably inflate a little over or under without much issue if it gives you the results you're looking for, but do so with caution of course - either above or below will increase risk of flats and/or blowouts. 5. Best practice for people completely unsure of what pressure they should use is to start dead center of the tire's recommended range and do a ride, then push up by 5 lb psi increments until riding the same route feels better or feels worse, then, starting back at the middle, lower pressure 5 lb psi at a time until it feels better or worse. Do this until you've covered the full recommended range. Using this procedure, you'll get a feel for where your favorite comfort range is (there may be more than one). Then you can start dialing in a sweet spot where it feels best for your normal riding. Then you can start playing with adjustments when you find yourself on different terrain or are adding pack weight. To do these adjustments, you'll obviously need a pump with a pressure gauge.

      60 psi no significa que sea el doble de aire que 30 psi. Es presión, no cantidad de aire. Por ejemplo, en un auto puedes poner 30-32 psi cómo máximo, pero en una bicicleta puedes poner 60 psi, ya que al ser el neumático más angosto, poca cantidad de aire da más presión. Sentirás más pesada un bicicleta en asfalto con 30 psi que con 60 psi.

      Look for replacements that accept higher pressure. Also take a look at car and truck tire aging advice. I imagine bike tires have a similar safe age limit. Maybe longer just because much less weight on them. Still beware as the grip degrades over a period of years. Rubber degrades over time regardless of tread wear.

    What about the weight carrying capacity? I cannot find any info on bike tires

    • @rei
      @rei  Рік тому

      Greetings & thanks for the question. Bike weight carrying capacity is dependent on several different factors, including frame design and material, not just the tire size and PSI. It also depends on whether you're carrying gear on the bike or pulled behind on a trailer. A general rule of thumb for most bikes carried by REI is 300 lb weight limit on bike, meaning weight of the rider and all other gear should be under 300 lbs. If you have questions about a specific bike/tire combo and carrying capacity, best to check with the bike shop at your local REI, or call 800-426-4840 to speak to one of our product experts. Happy cycling!

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of UA-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

    Shouldn't it be cold tyre pressure? I see most front tyre "recommendation" is to fill it at max for front and slightly lower at back. Eg maxxis recon front is 65psi which is also the max it can hold and rear is 60psi. This is for xc bike. It's little unnerving to fill at max considering that it might heat up or the temp may change significantly when you filled it. Also, lower pressure is good for grip but you can loose tyre on cornering because it will come out of rim. Esp true for mtbs which has skinny rims compared to tyre. Sheesh... Why people never give complete information before making video.
