Want to know how to install a USB charger to your Honda CB650R or CB650R so that you can charge your phone and Sat Nav? In Episode 1 of Spanner Time, I show you how! This will use the Honda 12v charger and a USB adapater. I then run the cables from under the pillion seat and tank and upto the front of the bike.
This worked brillantly even though the charging point is under the seat and it allows me to charge my phone or sat nav while riding, a must for touring on this bike!

I just installed a 2x USB socket on the handlebar. Perfect to charge the phone or gopro on the go, no hassle

Maybe a silly question. Does it only charge while the key is on? Or can I leave the bike locked up and leave a device under the passenger seat, charging?
There are no silly questions here! It's only active when the ignition is on so no fear of draining your battery. 👍

Guess who just bought a £6 ebay USB charger hard wired it straight through the battery, got a flat battery after bike not being used, jump started it off my car and now have an engine warning light on constantly? Shall I tell Mr Honda dealership of the jump start as bikes only 14months old?
Given you lead the cable from under the seat to your handlebars, why not utilize the socket hidden behind the front light instead?
Strangely enough, the SKU codes for both behind-the-head-lamp and under-the-seat approach seem to be identical: "08U70-MKN-D50" yet their brackets differ greatly.

I have the 550. Works fine with this setup.

@@gbroberm I didn't actually, just used the little USB connection to the side. Tucked behind the fly screen it was pretty much protected from the wet weather. 👍

Is an in-line fuse not necessary? Amps too low possibly? Or simply something else that can go wrong?
I believe the aux socket that the 12v charger plugs into has its own fuse. Not 100% sure but I thought I saw that somewhere when I was looking at different charging options.

That tom tom usb adapter, is it good on the vibrations? I have the same thing on my CBR 650R, but every time if the roads are not flat the vibrations cause the power to interrupt. In few words, is it fixed there?
Never had any issues with it, done over 6k miles.
Hi Dan, nice and easy! if i wanted to connect a USB charger to the accessory port so i don't have to run a wire all the way from the battery do you know what the load is of it? Planning on connecting a tomtom and heated grips
I think it's 2amps? Not 100% sure.

But then you'd be using the battery to charge the battery. Pretty sure it wouldn't work.
@@Englishbikerdan maybe misunderstood. If there is a direct connection to the battery, you will be able to charge by adapter wire, for example using c tek charger. Same as you will do, by connecting a charging socket direct to the battery.

What happens when it rains ? do you have a waterproof cover for the phone end connector of the cable when it's not in use ?
I just use a little rubber cover for the USB.

Plans for a tailtidy? I bought one but I found it to be too long aswell so I cut it in length. So now all the dirt hits my back! I mounted one of these 12V outlets on my bike...but I went for a position further back. Easier to reach.
I have an R&G tailtidy, I even did an install video. Took it off as too much water gets under the rear seat and on my back. Where did you mount your 12v adapter? You can't get much further back than under the pillion seat. ;)

dumb question.. i just ordered the same plug for my CBR650R 2019.. does this drain power when the bike is off? or it completely cuts off power if the bike is off? cheers guys
It's not live when the bike is off, so no risk of draining the battery.

It doesn't drain the battery when the bike isn't running if that's what you meant?
