The first time I went on a long holiday, I went to California from Ireland in 2000 - brought a cassette player and 6 cassettes.. pure bliss. Owning my music and movies is hugely important for me.
First time travelling overnight to England - borrowed my brothers Sony Walkman, had 2 cassettes (one with hits recorded from the radio) and 2 packs of batteries. Absolutely loved it!
Guarantee you still know every word of those songs!

As someone who had all that same tech back in 84 and now today’s tech as well. I can honestly say it was better back then.

I guarantee you did not have a Gameboy in 1984. Maybe a game and watch but you 1000% did not have a Nintendo Gameboy in 1984.

Before becoming a parent, I've always been into retro tech. It's even better as a parent now because it takes away the distraction and instant gratification of iPads. My daughter watches VHS tapes. I gave her a Walkman to pass time. They need quiet time to process the world around them. Even a game boy is beneficial for the hand eye coordination, because I hear kids in schools these days don't know how to use a computer.
I’d recommend trying the Analogue Pocket. It has a nice screen and takes the old cartridges. A nice blend of modern and retro.
As a Gen-Xer, this was a fun blast from the past! I remember the thrill of buying my super-small cassette Walk-Man with a special Walk-Man cover and belt clip back in 6th grade. Thank you for the interesting and wide array of EDC-related content on your videos and the special effort you take to edit and present them. Love being a member!

I've actually kept some of my old stuff from when I was a kid in the late 90s. So still got my Gameboy Colour and N64 laying arround. I think I even got my old Sony Walkman CD player(they rebranded the Discman to Walkmans in the early 00s). I rarly use any of them, but it's nice to have to look back at an "easier" time.
I keep loving the way you make your videos, I like the intro, splitting it into different parts and giving a tiny overview right in the beginning
Great concept, Marcus. As someone relatively obsessed with modern tech, it helps to appreciate old mediums and what came before. Plus, it generally means you’ll have a deeper understanding of how the modern stuff works!
Wow! With the watch that is a Transformer you really brought me back in time. We, from the 80s, surely are some of the luckiest people alive. We lived through some of the major technologic advances, and we can appreciate them all. Great video as always!

Thanks for taking me back. I got a really nice Walkman for my birthday in the mid 90s. Super thin all metal casing with a remote on the earphone wire. I was a stupid teen and sold it some time later on. Really regret it now. Also shout out to Mini Disks. Too bad not more came out of that tech.
Minidisc were the business, for about 2 years. They were amazing but they came out at the same time as MP3’s and they were never going to make it.

So excited to see the Olympus OM-2 on here. I started doing the typewriter thing as well- in pursuit of the single-use instrument theme. Got an old Olivetti Lettera 32 and took it to a local motorcycle shop to get it chrome plated! 😂

I was thinking about the walkman again this week after listening to the latest Cal Newport podcast. They were kind of the perfect mix of intentional and unintentional tech - you purposefully chose the albums you brought with you but because you were limited to only a few tapes in most instances you'd end up listening to the same thing again and again leading to a kind of deep thinking state as the music simultaneously drown out the world but became background noise in itself.
Loved this concept, very creative! And I also love listening to full albums, though I was more of a discman kid. Maybe I'll give the walkman a try hahahah For a future video, could you please show us your DVD/Bluray collection and system?

I remember using an Olympus OM-2 loved it. I still have an old 70's Ricoh 35mm. Honestly, I think the best handheld gaming experience is a modded DSi, 3DS or Vita...well built, great games and portable.

I remember getting a Walkman for my birthday when I was around 10-11. It was such a big deal!
as a gen z myself, in the same spot as you are btw, born in the 1998 i'm basically between the millenials and the gen z i managed to see a lot of old tech as a child, but for a really short amount of time, cassettes are the one i experienced the less, VHS stuck much more because all my cartoons were there, but cd players were on their best moments, mp3 were still not a thing for a long time unless you were really wealthy, so ipod were a thing, but i aswell even if younger got back using old tech. outside of my passion of photography, so full of REALLY old cameras, pre war ones and all, i went and took an old Ipod Mini from 2005 and made that my own music player, sure it's not the same as listening to cd or cassettes cause it's still more modern (i do actually have a ton of music tapes now btw because i fell in the rabbit hole of that format of music) i still have to rip the CDs and own the music myself, prepare playlists if i wanna use them or listen to the albums, and even if it's completely digital, having a dedicated music device in general has been incredibly different than just putting up spotify, i unsubscribed from it, luckly both me and my family we all kept all the CDs we used to listen so i have a TON of music to get back to. plus i'm a lot into modding, and you have no idea how much stuff you can do with old tech, my ipod mini i upgraded the memory from just 4 gb to 256 GB. that's the only thing i did, so i can keep better quality files on it

I love following the progression of consumer electronics and trying all the new gadgets I can, but I don't think I'll ever stop taking notes on paper. Something about the intentionality of pen on paper makes me remember things I wrote way more easily. It seems like about 90% of the people in my college classes take notes on laptops or iPads, but they are generally a bit younger than me.

recently picked up a DMG gameboy, a device that predates me by 11 years, and it has been quite magical playing games with that primitive pea green screen. I had a GBA as a kid, so I it does feel familiar

Someone else mentioned the analogue pocket. I would also recommend that device. You can play original cartridges on it and have 10x the resolution on a much larger screen. It plays up to gba and can be docked.
Miyoo mini plus is a good upgraded
And the retro game handheld market has many similar performing options.

I had an original Playstation, a Gamecube, and an original Xbox that I gave away. God I wish I had kept them! I had an Xbox 360 with a stack of immaculate games too that I sold, but i got my Switch out of that deal so I won't cry too much about that one. But man....I was stupid to give those game systems away!
On the flipside of that, it was very hard for me to get gaming systems growing up. I always always always wanted a Gameboy Color and was never able to get one. As an adult I offed to trade my Dad something if he'd buy me my dream Gameboy and he did! I don't play it much, but I have a pristine slime green Game Boy color, and it's one of the last things my father gave me so it's doubly special. And then I scored this really cool light for it that looks like monster slime so it's even cooler!

I so wish I still had a working iPod. I do have my old Gameboy Color, but I just play all those games on Switch now. I have a Huion drawing tablet, but I mostly just draw and paint with graphite and gouache on paper.
There is massive aftermarket support for iPods, have a look at iflash mods if you want to get into it. Currently in the middle of rebuilding my old classic 7th gen with like 600GB of storage and a 3000mah battery.

Super Ninetendo games: some of the new digital games/emulators just dont have the same accuracy as the analog controllers. For music, I enjoy digital subscriptions however I still use CDs in my car, I have complete control over what I'm listening to.

For anybody in search of some good headphones with a retro vibe, check out the Koss kph30i or porta pro headphones. They're affordable and have a nice warm and open sound. Also, pick up some yaxi pads for better comfort. The ones they make for the porta pro's will also fit the other models

I think that 'owning' it part is really what's missing from streaming and/or pirating. I know that when I used to pirate games all the time, I never really spent much time on them to get into them. If it wasn't a certified banger immediately, I could go grab something else right away and maybe that was better? Same with streaming music. I don't need to listen to the whole track. Next. Next. Next. Too many options.
If you thoughtfully curate what you pay for and what you bring with you, it makes it a little more 'special'. It also semi-forces you to listen to what you've got and helps you appreciate it more. And as someone of similar vintage ('81), I think we're in an interesting spot as you said. We were around when all this stuff came to be. We were culturally conscious when the internet became widespread (or even dial up BBS's depending on how nerdy you were, like I was). We also 'invented' a lot of the stuff, that's out there since the late 90's/early 00's. But the new stuff that's being shoved down our throats in the past 5 years or so, we don't see a real advantage to a lot of it. We straddle the 'never connected' and 'always connected' line in a way that even some mid/older Gen-X didn't. We ran the spectrum of 'parents have no idea where we are' -> pay phone calling collect -> pager -> mobile phone -> early smartphone -> always connected GPS tracked smartphone. These technologies matured as we matured.
analogue watches and cameras should stay a thing simply for the aesthetic benefits. i think as a novelty to use on occasion walkmen and gameboys are cool but having a switch and some MP3's on your phone are infinitely more convenient for portable music and games.
100% these things are less convenient. And for me that’s kind of the point. You use them when they ARE the thing you’re doing.
I listen more from my Sony Radio more lately. Also play more retro games on my Anbernic rg35xx. My 10 year old daughter is also liking this less connected lifestyle.

The Game Boy came out in 1989. So did Super Mario Land. The DMG-MLA Label of your Mario game with the yellow bar and green text is actually the Japanese release.
Your Game Boy Advance SP NES Edition launched in June of 2004. They sold the Game Boy for more than 15 years.

It's funny that today only relatively advanced photo cameras have manual mode (iso, aperture, focus, shutter speed). In fact I always use manual mode when using such a camera.

I use a vintage Nikon D700 digital camera for general photography.😂 It’s 12mp but has no video so it’s just a photography camera. There is almost an endless supply of new and used lenses that will fit this camera. I usually use it with a 50/1.4.

What I loved about stuff back then was “ it just worked “. Don’t get me wrong there was crappy product launches however most high end products were not released until they functioned properly. Ofcourse the tech today is better objectively but man the nostalgia goggles are strong 😅
I still have the original GameBoy and the box it came in. Unknown for sure if it still works though. And we have a Super Nintendo. Nintendo Wii (not as "retro" as the others). I bought a Nintendo Switch a few years ago but when I play it I tend to just default to Tetris. lol

Mon père étant décédé y’a un plus d’un an m’avait laissé une chevalière un appareil photo Kodak argentique et une montre eternamatic de 36 mm de diamètre un petit bijou automatique dans le cœur de la montre je l’ai réparé sur un entrecorne externe tordu et faites réviser et nettoyer l’horloger à été impressionné par le nombre d’année de fonctionnement même en l’état avant réparation !

I edc traditional watches, a Avantree sp850 mp3 player w/wired ear buds, RG35XX loaded with GB, GBC, and GBA games, I’m about to trade my 1st gen iPhone SE in for a flip phone. 🙂💪👊
One thing I'd say about the music, get some IEMs. Until I went to IEMs, I didn't truly comprehend the compromise I made for the convenience of wireless. And with how the industry is at the moment, high quality IEMs are getting really cheap. I have a pair of KBear KS2s, and they're absolutely fantastic. It's not exactly "retro", but the difference in quality is so tangible it's incredible. The feeling you get when you listen to a song on wireless earbuds is just flat, whereas through IEMs it feels like I'm in a studio, with them playing the instruments next to me. Considering people are willing to shill out £100s on wireless earbuds, it should be easy enough to spend £30 on some quality IEMs, and when you realise how much better the audio is, you genuinely won't want to go back.
Also, I love my cassette player. It's a bit of a crappy one, and I intend to get a Walkman some time soon, but the main reason I love it, is I can listen to songs that my dad made with his band. They never took off, and the only record of their music is a collection of 7 cassettes, but without them, the image I have of my dad would have been completely skewed, and being able to enjoy his old music has brought me a lot closer to him.

You can still, unofficially, get Star Wars (no a new hope tagline was added after)... Look up Harmy's despecialised edition. The guy has been working on manually upgrading the quality on the originals from different sources but it is it the ORIGINALS. No extra George stuff.
Harmy's technical rules for getting it (and he makes no money) is that you buy the Star Wars official blurays and own them)

Have an old camera that can have 4 hours of video on just a 2 gigabyte SD card. That's better in some ways.
Plus you get the vintage feel for free. No post production filters :)
hey! loved the video, just a small correction: vinyl is actually the best way to listen to music in every sense of the word. in terms of audio quality, vinyl is way better than streaming, since digital music is always compressed. streaming is actually the worse way to listen to music, and the option with lower quality. even CD's tend to have higher quality than streaming.
Thanks for letting me know. I love listening to records but honestly get frustrated at how short the run time is before having to flip sides. CD’s seem to be the best of both worlds for me. Currently rebying all the CD’s I donated in the 2010’s 😂

In my opinion one of the few things that have gotten better today than "yesterday" are flashlights (torches). Almost everything else has gotten worse. Most electronics now are more designed to spy on you and to create a revenue stream, rather than to provide a service.
Is retro tech better? Yes, obviously.
