Gentle Giant’s albums featured many songs with both literary subjects as well as social and personal commentary on life as rock musicians. “Free Hand” has more than most. The album’s title & first track was named “Freehand” because the band had just changed record labels and management and felt unshackled by prior contractual obligations. Putting these issues behind them upon its first release, Gentle Giant embarked on an extensive tour of North America and Europe, plus a short tour of the UK, to promote the album.
The incredible range of Gentle Giant's music is evident throughout this album. From the intricate vocal fretwork of “On Reflection” and the delicate medieval flavor of “Talybont” the Celtic-tinged rock of “Time To Kill” and the jagged rhythms of “Just The Same” all those diverse elements which made the band so strikingly original are skillfully blended and perfectly executed.

Brilliant Musicians
I have never heard counterpoint of this complexity and taste in rock music. These guys were masters.
AMEN!!!!!!
Gentle Giant music does not need any visuals. Their music is vision.
Visuals are a distraction to music (with the exception of a Performance video).
@@klyvemurray Comment is a distraction to visuals
I also prefer to close my eyes for this video, but the video editor definitely had some interesting interpretations of the music, and certainly put a lot of work in.
But also, this video is so good!
One of the best prog songs ever. It deserves the finest treatment possible.
"prog songs"? Fank Zappa really does not classify the prog-rock world, he stands out at a whole different level. Zappa does not get classified anywhere else as Zappa. Not saying that some interesting stuff happened back then in the prog rock era (Gentle Giant for instance)

@@patrickdemeyer8992 bro those bands are not pop this comment offends me
i changed it, bro
Kerry Minnear is by far the greatest genius rock music has ever produced.
And Ray.
Agreed:
- Kerry was the best keyborder of his time and a very fine singer. Unfortunately most of his vocal parts were not performed live (except Funny Ways).
- Ray was the best Bass-player of his time and a great multi-instrumentalist
- Gary was IMHO the most underrated guitarist; transforming those composition into his guitar tracks was close to pefection
--> this band was unique and never exceeded by any other band
I saw a Giant concert in NYC in the 1970's at the Beacon theater during the Free Hand tour! Minnear played a xylophone solo & he just kept playing faster & faster without losing the melody! It was to thsi day the most incredible thing I I've ever seen at a rock concert! Mind blowing!
Yeah, Kerry Minnear way up there, but gotta go with Fripp!
My first and favourite GG album, and this is just one of the great songs on it. Nice videos BTW
The Giant it's like a drug. I can't stop listening!
I love this so much! I remember my mum blasting this out, late 70s? She had Tannoy Mercury speakers in each corner of the room and hearing this through them blew me away. Monumentally magnificent!
The Steven Wilson treatment REALLY shines on this song. What a difference!
Listening to the new mix on headphones, it sounds amazing.
I DEFINITELY AGREE: It's breathtaking!
The GIANT never SLEEPS . Rock FOREVER YOUNGboys in theBand
Still one of my absolute favourites. Sounds great. The video is cool, but I realised, that since I know this song for so long now, I have my own inner images when I hear it. A video distracts me rather than giving me something. Nevertheless cleverly done.
I agree. i could do without the visuals. Not to disparage the person or persons who created them, but they are subjective and not to my taste.
The video is awful in my opinion. A song that morphs and transitions through various phases and moods like On Reflection shouldn't have 6 minutes of static nonsense as a video. The song is still absolutely phenomenal though.
@@phlog_dog7336 yep, I’d rather see the artists performing the masterpiece. Even if they mimed to it lol.
Wow, great improvement done by Steven Wilson. Sounds brand new. All voicing is now crystal clear. Bravo.
I wonder how many high school madrigal groups have attempted this?
Thanks to all current and former members of Gentle Giant, living and dead. Your music has improved the quality of my life. Special thanks to Johnny. RIP
RIP Ray. Best band ever.
Absolutely awesome!Titans of Prog...
I didn't think this song could sound any better but Steven Wilson proved me wrong. What a treasure he is. And what a treasure this band...!
I was 15. I had already purchased their first album. 1975, the year I discovered GG (in a Miracle Mart’s record section). My musical coming of age! Free Hand is a masterpiece. Buying it over again with this new mix will be amazing (considering that some earlier cd versions - early 90s - of Free Hand sounded so horrible)! Unfortunately, I was not to see them live until the Interview Tour (1976).
One of my favorite songs of all time even better live! Great remix by Steven!
Sounds amazing. It's actually one of my favorite GG songs. Good work and thanks a lot!
In my way did I use you, do you think I really abused you
On reflection now it doesn't matter:
How can you say I made you need me more than anyone else
Who can say it right now it's finished over:
It's my act, it's my calling, I explained exactly the falling
Different ways of life can never even:
Be the same when you saw me, could you always take me the
Same way As I came and went I tried to remember you:
Still, you stay
Tied in your way
Changing times
Watching the signs
How:
Could you see in me what you thought about all you want me to be
Now:
On reflection why should have I changed my ways for you
All around all around, all around all around
All around all around, all around all around
Cry my sympathy's with you but I never lied to you all in all
It seems it's just an experience:
Placed my cards on the table told of everything I was able
Understanding still, not anything different:
Find another to lean on, start again for I should have long
Gone, on reflection now it's just an experience:
Soon the pain will have ended, together never intended, as I
Come and go I'll try to remember you:

Got my CD copy this morning, sounds amazing. Must say I didn't like the video, the other ones Noah has done I was okay with, but, sorry, IMHO this is a complete mish mash (too literal in parts, see playing cards just because they are briefly mentioned in the lyric, it's a bit clumsy and uninspired) and the abstract stuff is just migraine inducing. I appreciate there's a current generation who can't just listen to music without there being a video, but with GG's music it just isn't needed at all. If the band were still performing live then that's the ultimate way to experience their music, without that, thanks, but I'll just stick to the albums, put my headphones on and close my eyes.
I scared the shit out of more than one of my school friends, playing this album when we were high - or tripping!
Nobody can touch these guys. They might be aliens.
Wonderful !
Greatest concert I ever saw was Gentle Giant opening for Yes at the Cow Palace in 1976.

It's okay.
Just turn off your screens. Otherwise you'll get a headache
Listened to the original prior to this so I could be objective in my own mind. Unfortunately the only thing I hear is reverb with the increased volume. If I turn volume down to same level as the original it still is no improvement at all. To me it just sounds like he managed to fit all of GG into a phone box or a lift as the warmth of the original has been replaced with an overly loud reverby claustrophobic mix. No improvement on a truly magical original, the same applies to His last voyage which I have also compared to the original.
I get that Steven Wilson is held up as some sort of demigod magician by this generation, and if that gets GG listened to by them then that can only be a good thing to spread the wonder of the band. I just hope that he never gets his teeth into In a glass house !
Got to see them live in Offenbach, Germany, in 1976. Photos here: www.kingbeat.com/gentlegiant/
Ein wahrer Zeitzeuge! Genial.
There's complex music and then there's Gentle Giant:) More complex than complex, but very good and unique:) Once you find your way through their universe it's very rewarding:)

Amazing bass
Upper crust. Top drawer. New mix with visuals is entrancing. Thanking!
I've been an audio engineer since the 70's and this sounds like it was mastered a little too hot. Maybe the actual disc will sound better. But it's concerning that Steve Wilson may be beginning to adopt more compression in his mastering for the sake of loudness. Back in the day, the golden rule of compression was " don't use compression unless absolutely necessary and then only sparingly." This "rule" has been sadly forgotten over the last 25 years in favor of louder more compressed digital mastering. Hopefully, when my copy arrives it will sound better.
Agreed. Heard a few remixes now. Not sure how I feel about them. Not to keen on the reverb choice/levels on the vocal intro here.
Seems I'm hearing dynamic loss also, making it less dimensional to my ears. He's certainly brought out a few things here and there, but... guess I'll reserve judgement till I've heard more on my studio monitors.
I certainly was hoping to love the remixes.
I generally avoid compression when mixing and mastering. Toto apparently used none for XIV, (according to Steve Lukather) and that album sounds superb. I like this mix of "On Reflection", however. I don't recall as much reverb on Derek's opening vocals, however.
I’m usually not that offended by compression, but I had the same concerns on this particular mix. The individual voices have some sort of audio steroid treatment going on, I’m hoping the multi channel mix won’t be too pumped up. “Gentle” should be the way these vocals are treated.
Wilson does not "Master" the new mixes in the way that we would do so with a final pass of eq/compresion/ etc. to the stereo mixes towards manufacturing. He does the remix and let's the original multi track tape capture do the work, using compression/eq on the tracks themselves instead of the entire mix. Many articles about this.
MASS SHEEP.........BUY THE FUCKIN DISC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....SEE WHERE GAGA GOT INFLUENCE
The video would fit a piece of Contemporary Music, which is sometimes melodic, sometimes atonal...so it fits Gentle Giant perfectly, because in their time they were all that...they were rock, they were blues, they were folk, they were contemporary - truly progressive. And they are still unique and have never been equalled. Perfect video for a perfect band.
Great and a great Mix!!!
Really nice remix! Shows you how well it was recorded the first time around.
Warum werden solche Songs so verschandelt. Original muss Original bleiben.

This video is perfect. It complements and understands the music, the band, the time.
A big love of my youth! Gentle Giant forever!
This is where Yes took inspiration for Leave It. I can bet.
My Ltd. Edition red vinyl copy is on the way 🥰
Steven Wilson has done his best job remixing Gentle Giant albums. He has done the dame with other bands but with not the same final results. Some years ago, i did lend my Octopus LP copy and never got ir back. ..
Love Gentle Giant but don’t especially like this remix. The reverb on the vocal parts is annoying. However, the instrumental parts sound good.
We have at least the chance to listen to THIS. Think about other born in different times or spaces that haven't got opportunity.
Excelente mezcla de voces ! Felicitaciones !!!
i've been listening to this for over 50 years now. and it still makes my hairs stand up. what a live show.
Great fugue!
I think On Reflection is Gentle Giants best song. The new version is a little bit reduced, the intro with the flutes is absent. But it isn't a problem.
Too much reverb, and the ending sounds stronger on the 35th anniversary remaster
Ok, i love gentle giant, absolutely. This remix is stunning!!!!
Wilson nails the remix !
