Silent Tools is the trademark for a family of tool adaptors for turning, milling and boring. The tool adaptors are designed to minimize vibrations through a dampener inside the tool. The majority of Silent Tools customers’ use these tools for long overhangs however, even with shorter overhangs, large productivity increases and surface quality improvements are to be gained.

I hate to tell you guys when I worked at the Royal Ordnance Factory over 50 years ago we were experimenting with putting a slug of tungsten carbide suspended in oil in the end of a boring bar of oval cross section, It was used to bore the internal profile of a 120mm shell. We had to go through a hole that was smaller than the diameter of the cavity we had to bore. After may attempts to eliminate vibration with no success, one of our older engineers suggested that they bore a hole through the bar and fill it with lead, success, it worked a simple solution. We also were able to buy machinable carbide bar stock that was then heat treated to harden after machining.

In long over-hang and/or vibration sensitive machining operations whether it be boring, milling or threading there is nothing that can match the performance of a Silent Tool. This truly is as good as it gets.....Until our next world class innovation.......rest is for the weary....

There is nothing quite like watching a mill-turn B axis head rapid to the bottom of a 16 inch bore with a 18 inch long 1.5 inch diameter boring bar, and only hearing the mist of coolant and the PWM frequency of the servomotors on your machine as it pull turns out. Give your engineers a raise!

How did they do long bores like on artillery weapons in the past? Why doesn't that method work today? Accuracy?

      Hi,
In the past a boring tool called gun drill were used. They are still a valid choice for smaller diameter holes. The accuracy of that process is ok but for larger diameter holes it is a costly method, both from the tooling perspective as well as the machining time.
Silent Tools is a generic boring tool that can be used from hole size 13mm or 1 Inch and above, offering easy handling set-up and machining operation with a superior surface finish.

The part that is shown last (at 3:16), did u really turn through the whole inside contour ? like the whole length, or from both sides... ?
