  • After a long summer I'm finally back to writing songs again, I wanted to get a simple rig that I could bring wherever but also that would sound kickass.

    Hopefully another solo album pops up in the future as well as a feared album. The technical aspects of Master of the universe was brilliant. A couple songs brought on the feeling of nostalgia even though it was my first time hearing it. A literal masterpiece Ola.

    This is strikingly similar to the setup that I used for a long time. Basic laptop, decent drum VST, EZMix, and a beater interface. I love that you did this video because it's good to have a reminder that your recording rig can be mobile, especially given what you mentioned about writing in a positive environment.

    I love that technology has been making things compact and portable. My dad was a music composer and when I used to go with him to the professional studios he recorded in, it was all huge mixer panels and massive speakers and so many wires and other tech that would make your head spin. Now all I really need to do to get a professional sound is a small soundcard, some decent speakers and headphones and a good PC or laptop to record with. Oh, and a Solar 7 string I'll be adding to my equipment soon. ;)

    • @Syklonus
      @Syklonus 5 років тому +1

      The wonders of technology. Of course the purists will still say all that old analogue equipment sounds better, but in reality it doesn't and they are talking bullshit. Most of them can't tell the difference between a real amp and a modern sim if they don't know which is which beforehand. What a time to be alive!

    • @Kevin.Kelly.
      @Kevin.Kelly. 5 років тому

      Syklone: You can be fooled by listening for sure. But I do miss that organic feel. There is something to be said about it. Kind of like the feel and response of a tube amp. Sonically, you are right.. you can fool.

    • @Hable

      I go through phases of buying outboard gear, then recording completely in the box and thinking "why don't I always do this?" and selling my outboard gear.... then doing it again. Currently at the in the box stage.

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril 5 років тому +2

      It’s never been easier to get incredible quality on the cheap than now. From smartphones as recording gear to cheaply manufactured guitars rivaling the sound and feel of instruments several times their price. It is a great time to be a musician. Just don’t get stuck when you realize the days of jumbo jets flying you to your gig are pretty much entirely over. The music you make is essentially going to be available for free no matter what you do, so you have to be smart and offer something other than the audio. The largest segment of the music listening population is more interested in experiences than ownership. I’d offer my own ideas on marketing in this era, but then I’d be playing myself soooo yeah. Keep your wits about you, fellows!

    Thanks, Ola! The following is more for anyone trying different DAWs. Just a thought regarding those projects for managing riffs for different songs: Reaper allows you to keep multiple project tabs open in your DAW, much like a web browser. You can copy/paste to them just as easily as if you were using only one project, like in this video (unless you're a "dragger"--you must copy/paste). Using several different projects at once allows me to have different plugins/tones/instruments for each song/project idea,. It therefore reduces clutter, and as long as you have acceptable DI files for the final mix, it also saves time re-recording. BTW, it disables those plugins from other projects open in other tabs, so I've had no problems with CPU usage. It will enable those plugins, though, if you play all of those projects at once as "master/sub" projects, which you can also do. But I do try the different DAWs, and even in Reaper I sometimes wind up doing what you are doing there, anyway! Haha

    I too have a logic pro X project - it's called "sandbox' and basically I have snippets or longer pieces in different areas. It's just one big project, I think this is very good as you can just fly into another thing and go back and forth vs 'do you want to close project' and then open a new one and load plug ins and get a pineapple up your butt for no reason because it's painful. I would recommend if you use headphones, get some flat response ones like MDR-7506 which have been in studios since 1991. I *LOVE* them. They aren't expensive but are accurate as hell. They are under $100 and are great when you really want to hear how something *really* sounds. Do some side by side, with Bose, beats, whatever speaker that's not a monitor you're going to get 'enhanced' sound. You want to really know what something is going to sound like get these.
    I approve however of Bos eee.

Sometimes I find jamming with other people sometimes helps not just for inspiration but it will subconsciously put you in competitive mode especially jamming with new people with everyone trying to size everyone up.

    Backyard view is the main thing!
