  • Welcome to TAMA TALKS brought to you by the Torrance Art Museum Advocates. Today’s talk will feature work currently on view at the TAM as part of the Sur Biennial showcase.
Founded in 2011, the SUR: biennial seeks to explore the complex notions of globalization and exchange that takes place in the ambiguous borderlands between Los Angeles and the broader 'South.'
The multi-site, independently-curated, biennial exhibitions showcase works by local and international artists who have been influenced by the cultures and artistic traditions of Mexico, Central & South America, and the Caribbean.
For the 2023 SUR: biennial the Torrance Art Museum is presenting "MALA MUERTE/bad death” Religious Syncretism in the Latin American Identity curated by artist Hope Ezcurra.
She explains the Latin identity and culture is one very strongly influenced by religion. "MALA MUERTE/bad death" examines the conceptual whispers of indigenous belief systems hidden under the colonial religion of Catholicism, that has shaped the modern Latina/Latino/LatinX identity. The exhibit intends to peel back the layers of the unique spiritual landscape of the Latin American diaspora.
This exhibition is on view at the TAM in the main gallery, lobby space and dark room, through December 2, 2023. The museum is located at 3320 Civic Center Drive in Torrance and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free however donations are accepted as they are used by TAMA to provide artist stipends and cover shipping costs.
This discussion is being recorded and will be posted to our UA-cam channel with all of our previous TAMA Talks. You can also access it from our website. www.tamadvocates.com
Hope is a self-taught artist. She recently had her work shown at Nomad/Tryst in Torrance. Her curatorial efforts include the Artist in Residency program “Window” at the Del Amo Mall and ¿WILD?, the TAM’s environmental art focused public art residency in collaboration with Madrona Marsh Preserve and Nature Center. Both currently on view! Today she will walk us through her curated exhibition Mala Muerte/bad death and the process behind selecting artists and the kinds of works on view for this iteration of Sur: biennial.
