I am very interested in this puzzle and while I can solve 3x3 I have not tried 2x2. How much harder would this puzzle be without that prior knowledge? Would it be recommended to learn 2x2 first?

Definitely try to solve 2x2x2 before 2x2x2x2! It will help your understanding a lot!
