Thank you!! I bought the switch from the dealer at $240. They wanted 1.5 hours labor to install at $165 and hour (another $247 for labor). After watching this video, I had it swapped out in about 20 minutes! Everything worked just like you laid it out.
Had the same problem with my 2016 SGS. Took apart and gently blow it out, reassemble and tighten the two screws in the back. If the screw loosen it will stop working. Double check screws in the back prior to dropping 250 on a part you might not need. Great vid and info!
I have a 2015 SGS. I start it in gear with the clutch depressed all the time around town. However whenever i go on a long ride, say to like las Vegas, when i try and start it in gear there, i get the same thing, no crank, no nothing. Its kind of strange, isnt it? What do you think is wrong?
Had the 15 ultra, mine went out on the way home, brand new bike. Fixed under warranty at least twice. They sent me a letter extending my warranty because they know they put out a bad product. That left switch pack is junk. 8 months later, I traded down to a 13 ultra. Best decision ever. You showed the fix but not really the detail...how to pry out the mileage button and not a close up of which screws to remove. Its every day stuff to you but I need light and pictures :)
I have a 2017 Road King that is not starting in gear with the clutch lever pulled in but everything else is working fine, cruise control works fine and disengages when I pull in the clutch same as when I pull in the brake or turn the throttle as it should. The guy bought the bike from was having the same issue the the only difference from stock equipment was he added tassels to the levers. I never gave it much thought till now but I had changed out the stock levers for an aftermarket lever and at one point everything worked perfect I could start it in gear by pulling in the clutch lever. Well I did some adjusting on position of my levers got everything fit back together and tightened up and then the bike would not start in gear again with the lever pulled in. Today I took a closer look at how the lever and safety switch play together and it made me think that maybe when I had reassembled everything the position of the lever assembly in relation to the switch assembly was now different. So I moved the lever assembly slightly away from the switch assembly giving it just a slight little bit more range of motion on the safety switch as the lever cam moved out from in front of the safety switch. My bike now starts in gear when I pull the lever in. What you might want to try on these bikes having issues is maybe just pull the lever off completely to start with and see if the bike will then start in gear since the lever itself has a cam that pushes the switch in opening the signal path back to the computer and when the lever is pulled in it allows the switch to come out and close the signal path allowing the electrical signal current to go back to the computer. So removing the lever altogether would act as though the lever is pulled in. It is likely just in alignment issue since I have heard guys make comment about a brand new bike doing the exact same thing. So based on what I have found it is a matter of not nesting the lever and switch assembly quite so tight together. Also another thing that could cause the switch not to function properly would be a bent clutch lever. If the clutch lever is hitting the handlebar too soon the switch will not have proper travel distance to close the signal path. So first try removing the lever altogether and go from there. Might save someone $250 +
It absolutely is a problem that needs fixing! I have a 2018 FLHTK that stalled in the middle of an intersection because the RPM dupe so low, due to the bad switch pack. This happened twice in traffic and left me with a bike I couldn’t restart until I figured out it would not start in 1st. The lights had changed and it was very dangerous. Also, earlier, before I was aware of this issue, I had my bike stall during the middle of a tight u turn, causing my bike to fall over.
I had the exact same issue on a 2018 ultra limited. Found the problem at a stop sign when the bike stalled on it's own and I couldn't restart it. So I agree it can be a safety issue as I tried to push the bike off the road with impatient cars all around me.
Well I got a 2007 Ultra Classic HD, brought it brand new and just started doing maintenance about two years ago because the older it gets little things start to fail. A month or so ago I purchased a bunch of chrome parts to add a little bling to my baby. I basically changed out everything on the bike handle bars except the brake fluid reservoir. I'm going to let a pro do that. It took a while but thank God for UA-cam videos on how to do it correctly. Well about 3 weeks ago I went down to Big Bend National Park TX with a few friends on the bikes. During the ride I found out my cruse control stopped working, and my bike wouldn't start in gear. It sucks going down I 10 with no cruse control. Anyway I searched UA-cam for videos to troubleshoot the problem. I couldn't find anything for a good while, then I came across yours. Well I took the clutch handle off again and found the problem in about 5 minutes. It was the wrong clutch handle, there was nothing on the handle that could push in the clutch safety switch. I said this cant be right, Amazon would never make an mistake of sending me the wrong part. Relooked on my Amazon purchase history and yes it said it would fit 2007 Ultra Classic HD. Anyway it works now and I just wanted to thank you for putting together an wonderful video that made my life a little easier. I put the old handle back on until I get a new one in. I subscribed to your channel, with wish you the best of luck.
Thanks for heads up. Awesome informative video. While looking for part ( none in stock ) at dealer. Bump into friend, expressed my problem, he suggested try contact cleaner on plug and terminal. I did this and went ahead and applied non conducting electronic grease. Problem solved. Saved $250. Seem moisture gets inside circuit plug as it seemed they come dry from factory. Second time this happened. First changed under warranty. Again thanks for information.
Had similar issue with '17 SGS but all mine was the plunger behind the clutch lever sticking, squirted some silicone lube in there and worked it back and forth. Obviously that wouldn't work for this bike but something else to check for others.
Is a clutch cable covered under used extended warranty, I have an appointment to replace my cable and HD dealership told me it is covered & all I have to pay is the $50 deductible, that’s why I was asking. Great job explanation of this issue.
That switch is very sensitive. If you put thicker hand grips or change the clutch lever to an after market lever, the bike may not start in gear with the clutch pulled all the way in. Before spending 250 bucks try taking the lever off and with a dremel or a file, file down the area of the clutch lever that makes contact with the switch. You can file and check until it starts working again. I got this tip from softbrake.com who puts a slight bend on the lever that allows the clutch to grab closer to the grip. I have also seen this problem pop up on stock bikes when the clutch gets hot. Once it cools, it will again start in gear with the clutch pulled in all the way.
Thank you for this! I'm not able to start my bike in gear, and further, my cruise control comes on, but won't set. Putting these two things together makes me think for sure it must be the clutch switch. Looks like a simple enough job. Clear concise directions. I have a Road King, so I'm bummed I can't upgrade to the lighted switches.
I’m having clutch switch issues right now. It’s not only that the bike can’t start in gear with the clutch engaged. There are other issues. Stalling at lights. Engine revving without throttle engaged. That was scary. Fortunately I have an extended warranty. Running it up to the dealer this weekend.
Thank you Fathead, after watching your video I was able to successfully diagnose and repair my motorcycle. Your step by step guide was perfect. I had to wing it on the right controller switchapck since they are sold right and left in the package.
I ride a 2020 FXST and the same thing started happening with my bike. I traced it to the clutch switch by flicking it with my finger a few times. Push it in with your finger and let it flick back out with a click. After I did this, the bike started in gear with the clutch pulled as it should. To make a more positive repair I sprayed Deoxit contact cleaner into the switch and flicked it several times to help clean and lubricate it. Then at the starter I unplugged the solenoid control wire (small), sprayed the connector and terminal with Deoxit and plugged it in and unplugged it several times cleaning it. The bike is operating normally now.
That was awesome. I was told by my HD dealer that they replaced my module and it still won't start in gear and my cruise control still does not work. Any suggestions that I can pass onto my local Harley Dealer. Mine is a 2014 TriGlide. I will recommend that they view your video. Thanks again.
This was great information. However, if I stop in gear and turn the motor off, not only will the bike not start in gear, but it takes a while before I can get the bike to go in neutral!
I have lighted already on my 14 streetglide my cruise still works but doesn’t Start with clutch pull in and in gear.. going to switch to original switch to see if that’s the problem
Great video! 👍 Same recent issue with my 16 SG. Clutch switch was 1st guess, but wasnt sure if it could be swapped at the bars or if I had to pull wires through the bars again. Very glad I dont have to pull wires back through again. Thanks for the lighted part numbers, plan on that upgrade while Im in there.
Watched alot of repair videos 1st one I have seen of yours. Well done-I subscribed. Have a 2015 Freewheeler same issue on not starting but my cruise controls work. Had to install a Widowmaker shifting system (accident results) and that system has a dummy plate that holds the clutch engagement button in all the time. Wondering if that's preventing the bike from starting in gear...Guess I can just change it back temporary to see. Thanks for sharing.
I didn’t have the clutch side go but I had the break side go. Brake light switch for the brake lever went bad. Supposedly there was an upgrade, 2014 CVO Limited. Actually I wouldn’t even of known it except for I don’t like them Blankey back lights but I do Blankey them with my hand lever and the cruise never kicked off. So I didn’t have any brake lights either for the hand lever. Had a ride from Pittsburgh to Nova Scotia like that. Thanks enjoy your video
Do you happen to know if you can replace just the clutch switch on a 2012 Dyna or if it has to be the whole housing? Currently having the same issue on a wide glide; going to try cleaning it out and lubricating it first hoping that will fix it
My 2016 Fat Boy S has the same problem. I took the switch assembly apart today and it doesn't seem to have the white connector that you disconnected. Is it wired directly to the circuit board on this model? I'm about 45 minutes away from you in NOVA, I might ride up and have you all look at it. I can't seem to find a decent shop around here.
Man, love your videos. I retire next Feb and plan on going to HD tech school. Wish I had the opportunity to hands-on learn from someone like you. I'll be a youngin' when I retire at 50 and do a lot of my own work on my 18 Road Glide. Would just love the opportunity to intern under someone to learn more. Great videos. One question though...isn't the left side grip supposed to be glued? Thanks again. Great videos. Keep em' coming.
What do you do when its an intermittent problem, my 2016 CVO Street Glide will intermittently not start in gear, of course when I took it in they could not duplicate it, I knew what was wrong, the service advisor knew what was wrong, but the service manager would not allow the tech to replace it. Now the bike is out of warranty and its not starting all the time, I guess I buy the switch online for 20% off and free shipping and install myself, good idea to get the lighted kit to get both switches (even though the CVO's come with lighted switches, that way you have a right hand switch when it craps out) Good video, maybe do the new water pump kit on a twin cool on your next video.

I have the same problem with the starting in gear, however only after a long ride. Around town, it starts in gear all the time. When i ride to vegas which is 6 hours away, when i get there it will not start in gear... actually it is intermittent, sometimes it will and sometimes it wont. Any idea? The mechanic at vegas harley said it was the battery in the FAB. Changed it and still having the same problem.
@@barkchopper i looked up "2015 street glide special wont start in gear" and the first video is "fat head cycles" he uses a diagnostic tool and verifies the hand control is bad.... and then gives the part number for hand controls that light up... and they are only 20 or 30 dollars more than the stock ones... and you get both controls, not just 1. That is what happened to me. I paid 230 for stock, 1 side, and then asked them about the pair of upgraded controls and i got them for the 30 dollars extra and returned the single control. Hope this helps.
Nice video how much for a diagnostic machine like that cost. With that machine you could find and fix almost anything on your motorcycle. Glad to know about the upgrade costs on the switch compared to stock.
I have an 01 electra glide ultra classic with the marelli fuel injection and i have ck engine light on. Is their a way to pull the codes without having to take it to HD? Also, where could i purchase a BUDGET diagnostic scan tool? Thanks
Hello , need your help my 2015 roadglide won’t start as soon I turn knob to start takes me to enter pin even with fob present, no infotainment screen, or fuel pump priming nothing, battery is good
Any idea why my 2015 roadglide won’t start? As soon as I turn ignition knob to start it promptly takes me to enter pin, even with fob on the bike, I got no fuel pump priming or nothing, like when you turn knob to start you hear fuel pump going , I got nothing
17 Limited...mine will start fine in gear...but my neutral light comes on sometimes and gear indicator doesnt show. I think my problem is the neutral safety switch in the tranny.
I have had mine replaced on my 17 ultra limited ones it’s going back again this time they are going to replace the clutch lever and switch all under warranty 😓
Would this cause the bike to feel like there is a fuel problem. My bike cuts out while I am riding. Thought it was a fuel issue. Mechanic found no fuel issues. My bike also won't start with clutch in. Could this cure my stalling out issues also?
My bike starts like on the 6th and 7th press. Somtimes on the first… it’s a brand new 2021 RGS… but when I take it to the dealer it starts up every time so they said they can’t diagnose it
My Freewheeler same issue. I read somewhere you have to hold both the clutch and 1 brake in same time before starting in gear. Didn't solve my problem did both the front and rear brake with clutch grabs no difference.
Sorry, can’t agree with all this. Get a split ring pliers, remove the split ring for the pin the clutch leaver rotates on. It is on the bottom of the pin. Remove the pin and leaver. On the control housing you now see two plunger buttons. One in line with the clutch line and one facing forward that he showed. Clean that forward facing plunger button with electronic contact cleaner pushing the plunger button multiple times to work the contact cleaner in. That fixes it. It fixed mine and hundreds of other bikes without a “top notched” shop selling you parts and labor. It is just a little dirt getting in there.
No sir. I bet you have a switch problem. As someone stated in this thread further down it not being able to start in gear could actually be a Safety Problem

I currently have this problem on my 2017 Ultra limited. My bike also sometimes with the clutch pulled in while rolling forward will flash that it is in a gear. It will display 2 for a second then 6 or 3 or 1 no pattern just displays in a gear then goes out. If I stop it goes out anyone think this is the same issue?
Fat Head Cycles Okay fine . No problem. Hd needs to stop advertising their #1 ( simply not true ! ) stop advertising “ the Real Thing ! “ ... ( another lie ) “ made in America “ the biggest lie . Start advertising : Buyer beware , 26 % fail rate ! Now ... that’s accurate !
no dielectric grease on the connector, no glue on the hand grip and you didn't mark where the clutch housing clamp was located, oh that's right- it's an 'extra' service you provide. At least you covered the guy's gas tank. You're a parts replacer... what would you do without that computer?
lynskyrd thank you for the view and the comment. The connector doesn’t require dielectric grease. It is a weather tite connector with out grease from the factory. The grip does not require glue as the grip is keyed into the switch housing to prevent it from spinning. Thank you again for taking time to comment
I have a 2020 fxbb m8 with a stage 2 my bike stalled on highway and a red light. Still under warranty so took it to dealer. Only problem is if the bike doesnt display a code they wont fix anything.
I was going 75 mph on highway and 2020 m8 engine decided to stall. Was a bitch trying to pull over on a shoulder lane trying to figure out how to restart the bike while it was in motion
I dont understand why HD doesn't go back to its roots. It is not a bike with performance, heavy and questionable driveability... So give up on electronics... I have a 2008 softail and even basic electronics such as pump, ecm is not 100% reliable... even break switch was on al, the time. Sad..But reality.. I think 80% of bike is produced in China, so.... 2017 ultra. Same problem. Only on long rides. Works fine cold in the garage.
@@barkchopper hey brother, I just changed the left side hand controls, and it fixed the problem
I need to fix the switch for a Harley Freewheeler 2016. the switch is similar to the one in this video. I have to start in NEUTRAL.
Awesome Information
Nice video how much for a diagnostic machine like that cost. With that machine you could find and fix almost anything on your motorcycle. Glad to know about the upgrade costs on the switch compared to stock.
Snap-On Ethos scanner is around $2800.00 and the Harley-Davidson adaptor set is another $700-$800
Do they make these clots up controls for a 2013 street bob ?
Just subscribed to the channel, brilliant work. All the best 👍👍😎
I just bought a 2018 sgs and it wont start now. Blows smoke out if the air breather and exhaust?
It couldn't have been the connection wire? sweet video 👍
I have an 01 electra glide ultra classic with the marelli fuel injection and i have ck engine light on. Is their a way to pull the codes without having to take it to HD? Also, where could i purchase a BUDGET diagnostic scan tool? Thanks
as an old sparky - try some electrical cleaner / freon
Exactly!
Hello , need your help my 2015 roadglide won’t start as soon I turn knob to start takes me to enter pin even with fob present, no infotainment screen, or fuel pump priming nothing, battery is good
Don't even have a bike and its amazing to watch you fix bikes....
Can lighted switches be had for 2018 Heritage Softail?
Mine is a intermittent and waiting on warranty repair parts now. , it seams they also have some clutch levers out of spec also
Are you going to spring for the Lighted controls?
Can this also cause the bike to shut off while riding?
Great job Sir!
Any idea why my 2015 roadglide won’t start? As soon as I turn ignition knob to start it promptly takes me to enter pin, even with fob on the bike, I got no fuel pump priming or nothing, like when you turn knob to start you hear fuel pump going , I got nothing
thanks for the help
It is my pleasure!
Sorry, what is the replacement part number again?
17 Limited...mine will start fine in gear...but my neutral light comes on sometimes and gear indicator doesnt show. I think my problem is the neutral safety switch in the tranny.
I have had mine replaced on my 17 ultra limited ones it’s going back again this time they are going to replace the clutch lever and switch all under warranty 😓
See if they will allow you to upgrade to the lighted switches if you pay the cost difference!
Same thing is happening to my 2017 softail deluxe how can i fix it??
Replace left clutch switch pack
@@adminadmin9997 On First gear my Harley will not turn. On neutral it starts and runs fine. But when I put it in first it jumps and stalls.
@@pyro707 what model is your harley and year?
Fine vid..carry on
got same prob on 19 DLX
Would this cause the bike to feel like there is a fuel problem. My bike cuts out while I am riding. Thought it was a fuel issue. Mechanic found no fuel issues. My bike also won't start with clutch in. Could this cure my stalling out issues also?
This repair cured my stalling issue on a 2018 ultra limited.
Mine does that sometimes, especially after a gentle wash...
Thanks m8, I have to by one of snap scanner. The FP3 doesn't reading all the code.
If relayed to this video. Yes my fuel pack reads code. LHCM left hand control module.
Look up under maintenance Then scan codes. Hope it helps.
My bike starts like on the 6th and 7th press. Somtimes on the first… it’s a brand new 2021 RGS… but when I take it to the dealer it starts up every time so they said they can’t diagnose it
I have a 2017 Tri Glide. Cruise control works but it will not start in gear.
My Freewheeler same issue. I read somewhere you have to hold both the clutch and 1 brake in same time before starting in gear. Didn't solve my problem did both the front and rear brake with clutch grabs no difference.
With the 013 ultra can I still only buy the clutch switch ?
Yes sir you can. HD Part Number is 71620-08
@@FatHeadCycles Thank you..
My 2015 FLRT won't start in gear either, only starts in gear if I hold down the foot break.
My 17 SG never started in gear. I just thought this was how it was made for safety?
No sir. I bet you have a switch problem. As someone stated in this thread further down it not being able to start in gear could actually be a Safety Problem
@@FatHeadCycles My bike died on me one day while I was in the turning lane. This, just as the light turned green. Yikes. I thought for sure I would get rear ended by traffic, while I was fumbling around trying to find neutral ro restart my bike. That being said, I can see how that could be a great danger
Alot of people with the M8 engine say they replaced left switch pack when they experienced this issue.
hi flathead
I ask u question about my harley roadkkng 2005 and problem is when turn on start and speedometer and tachometer went out and rear brake not work and fuel accessory 15 amp blow everything when start or ride 50 mile die and fuse blow again and engine run and light good and i notice one cluster security red light on suppose be off but come back go off and back on i think is security alarm box short or not sure
problem from
guy shop said think handlebar right switch start and on and off switch might have rub wire touch ground tap fuse blow out and need check if wirs if bad refix wire tape cove will not rub metal handle bar ? if u figure out please send my email thank you
Just bought a 2020 freewheeler switch broke the next day.
Great knowledge! Great vids!
Thanks man you rock
THANKS
yup- 'Genuine Harley-Davidson replacement parts... Made in Mexico.
lynskyrd you would be surprised how many of their parts are imported. Kinda sad really.
Fat Head Cycles Okay fine . No problem.
Hd needs to stop advertising their #1
( simply not true ! ) stop advertising
“ the Real Thing ! “ ... ( another lie )
“ made in America “ the biggest lie .
Thank you again for taking time to comment
thanks for the explanation... sorry for the harshness.
Fat Head Cycles "sound of mic dropping & hitting floor." Nice reply Fat Head Cycles.
Bronson would not need that on his sportster because in those days Harley Davidson.. did not need a switch to keep It from starting in gear...
Why is it a common problem.i know wierd question but these bikes are only 5 years old at this point.
I have a 2020 fxbb m8 with a stage 2 my bike stalled on highway and a red light. Still under warranty so took it to dealer. Only problem is if the bike doesnt display a code they wont fix anything.
Maybe I'll keep my '07 Ultra! Lol
The ride of a new Ultra is head and shoulders above a stock 07. I wouldn't think twice about buying a new one!!!
Snap-on !!!!)
It is somewhat a safety issue if you stall while in traffic and your bike is a bitch to find neutral
I was going 75 mph on highway and 2020 m8 engine decided to stall. Was a bitch trying to pull over on a shoulder lane trying to figure out how to restart the bike while it was in motion
Too many “safety” switches/sensors installed nowadays on cars and motorcycles 🤦♂️ I HATE modern day technology. More tech = more problems.
I aggree!
Just thought I destroyed my bike, just to find out my damn kickstand wasn’t up all the way
My dealership tried telling me its not supposed start in any gear only neutral lmao
Well that's a lie I got a 2020 fxbb street bob it starts in any gear
My 2015 Freewheeler starts in gear but I have to be holding the foot break.
Just cut the switch wires and solder a new 10 dollar switch on. There. I saved you all 220 dollars plus.
It's a safety issue if you screw up and shut the bike off in traffic, by hitting the off switch.
That is a great way to look at it. An angle that I had never considered. Thanks for watching and commenting!
It happened to me on the parkway.I was breaking in a pair of new gloves, and hit the off switch .
+Fat Head Cycles Bought 2018 Triglide & was told it was a safety issue. All 2018 were like that??
Dude you should have put the reverse on lol
No infotainment screen or nothin
MIDROLL ADDS = 'DISLIKE'
Please, when you work on my CVO, don't put your tools & knife on my seat. Thank you
I dont understand why HD doesn't go back to its roots. You see my point? Another switch failure.... I knew that when he started describing the symptoms....lololol...Made in China.
Needless diagnosing. Just pull the front brake lever and the bike will start in gear.
Wrong.
Excellent mechanic, awful motorcycles, expensive to buy, then need better quality parts fitting, barmy.
