I used Hiiker on the Coast to Coast last summer after seeing Abbie recommend it in a previous video. I haven't used any of its competitors but it was very useful. It crashed a couple of times during the two weeks I was using it but that was never a major problem and it worked fine after re-opening the app. The C2C is notoriously badly waymarked so it made life a lot easier.
Thank you so much for this review Abbie. I used the app for the 2nd half of my Coast to Coast back in 2019. It saved my skin being trapped in the middle of a bog with no sight of the trail. I consulted the app every 5 minutes or so after that and it absolutely kept me on the trail. I have been raving about it ever since. I am currently recovering from a total knee replacement but hope to come back up-over to do the Hadrian's Wall path in the next couple of years. I intend to upgrade to the pro version for that and will most certainly lean on your awesome information video to make the best use of all the new functions. I can't wait to see your latest Hadrian's Wall video. Thanks again for being so helpful Abbie. It was comforting having you watching my back as it were when I did my C2C as I was actually unwell (migraine medication problems) during the Lake District section and my mental health was challenging. Keep on living wild Abbie and thank you for your honesty, integrity and authenticity, I know that thousands appreciate that about you and find great encouragement from your journey. Happy New Year! May it hold many outstanding new adventures (how about bike-packing the Outer Hebrides? I hope to do that). Dave from down-under
I bought this last year on your recommendation I got the 3 year package and I can say that its come a long way in the past 12 months it really has.hi abbie.
Will be looking at this as for years I was using Viewranger (excellent app., but to my mind ruined since its demise on takeover) simply to track my walks as I always prefer navigating by map and compass - as you rightly say, no batteries to peg out at the wrong moment. A key thing I am looking for in any app. though is to run cumulative and easily accessible stats. of my own walks and ascents, whilst also having all of them easily viewable on a map. I am sure I am not alone in this and yet I have still to find an app. that does meet these simple requirements that used to be so ably fulfilled by Viewranger.
ViewRanger, yes it was so good, then the takeover, purchased maps and have countless maps, found it on my old phone, no internet connection but my maps still work on gps, found out if you don't go online, maps and tracking still work.
Good in-depth video! In my experience, the big downside to using these phone map apps while hiking is battery drain. I enjoy doing all the pre-trip planning at home and printing my own custom maps to help me when I am actually hiking.
Great review of a great app. 😉
Used ViewRanger for a 3-month walking holiday in 2019 and found it great - it worked well for planning your own routes and then walking them, but since it became outdooractive it lacks the functionality I need. I've tried Hiiker. It seems to be a bit inaccurate, sometimes stopped recording without me wanting it to stop, and recently it would only open in record mode and it kept crashing when I tried to get out of that mode (although the recent upgrade seems to have fixed that issue). I have a 100 day walking holiday planned for 2023, so I hope Hiiker is stable, functional and accurate for my needs when I do that (although right now, starting a recording, while motionless at home, it tells me my average speed is 4.3km/hr while I'm sitting on the couch).
Nothing will ever be as good as Gaia, and even the free version is enough for most hikers and backpackers.
Thanks Abbie, defo getting pro version. I'm planning on walking Pennine Way next year..I didn't get the discount?
Is there any way you can edit a route whilst on the hoof so to speak. I often decide to detour a few miles to see features visible on the map, and on my old app, Viewranger, was able to amend the route along safe "paths" (I. E. Not walking me over a cliff edge) whilst I had a two minute break to do so. If Hiiker can do this then I'll be very tempted to acquire the app.
wont download on to my lap top can not find the app in Microsoft windows 10
Still use maps, love maps, prefer maps, personal choice of course. Still prefer guide books, again personal hoice. However when bikepacking I make more use of technology so this app could be useful, will give it a go.
For some reason I seem to get different screens that you. But I find this really difficult to understand it’s probably an age thing lol but my map is different and I can’t get my location up in order to follow I’ve not had this problem with all trails etc so no idea what I’m doing lol
See where you were at the start, sat on that rock ?
If you had a jet pack and some powerful binoculars, you could have whizzed up to 1,000 feet, looked north and seen me waving at you.
Please review jetpacks next, because I want to get one for Xmas, for my grannie.
Very interesting review of the app. I use OS proffesional as I create my own GPX files and can do this on route. You did not seem to cover that.
But like all technology it appears to tell you what to do rarher than you making decisions. Also it takes the fun out of planning and researching the route. Want to know where the pub is, the app tells you. No more walking up to a stranger and having a little conversation about which pub to go to.
HiiKER does have a route planner and you can export / import GPX files. You can also use multiple map layers (Harvey maps & OS maps)
@@eoinhamilton4827 it's a great app, no doubt. I like simplicity and not to many options. It the event things go south in the middle of a rain storm I don't want to have to deal with multiple options. But thats me. For some this will be a great tool.
It doesn't seem to work on my phone, it directly sends me to the play store and doesn't let me add the code (ABBIE) when checking out. Sorry sweetie I'm not sure it's as good as you're saying it is, it doesn't even have uffmoor woods like the other apps i have and not paid for yet. I think I'll go with alltrails or maybe komoot. Thanks for sharing though and see you on your next adventure ✌️ 🤟 🤙
Try all in one offline maps, it's free, has many map layers and no FB or Google trackers.
@@JMJC1 I have actually tried that, but it doesn't seem to work no matter what device I'm on, I have to admit, I'm not a fan either of apps and websites wanting to know everything about you.
Hey Rich. The link abbie has there is set to prompt people to install the app. When you're checking out on a subscription, the code ABBIE will get you 20% off
@@eoinhamilton4827 I did try via the app, same issues sadly. But thanks for your comment 👌
@@IrelandRider I think it's becasue there is alreadu a 20% discount. So you won't be able to get a further discount
