This is probably a story that everyone knows, believer and unbeliever alike. The story of Jesus walking on water. Such an impossible and magnificent thing, but I believe, apart from the reminder that God is able to do things way out of the box of our imagination, there is also a beautiful promise.
The disciples found themselves in a storm out on the sea. In the midst of the storm, Jesus starts coming to them on the water. Peter sees Jesus on the water and longs to be with Him, so Jesus calls him and he steps out. As he is making his way, he took his eyes of Jesus, became afraid and began to sink. He calls out to Jesus and Jesus reaches down and takes his hand!
There is a common misconception that the Christian life is void of its challenges; that every day is a stroll through a flowering meadow, but it is not so. There are trials and "storms" that come. At times we are prepared. We're standing on dry land probably under the cover of our home. However, other times, they come when we are most vulnerable. When we're out on the sea and the only thing between us and drowning is the flimsy wooden hull of our boat.
God may even call us in the midst of our storm. He may call us to get out of our present "comfort zone" and walk in a way that only He can direct. We feel like we've got it, but then we become overwhelmed with the things around us and begin to sink. Once we call to Him, He will answer and reach out to us. At this point, we may think, "Well, it's all sunshine now!"
I think the beautiful thing about this story is that between the moment when Jesus grabbed Peter's hand and the moment that they stepped back into the ship, the storm was still raging. The Bible says that it was AFTER they got in the boat that the wind ceased.
In truth, Peter had to hold onto Jesus and ride out the storm! Storms are a given in life, but we can find comfort in knowing that when we call on God, He is going to reach out. We're not alone in our trials. We can hold onto Jesus (or He might hold us) and ride out the storm.
Matthew 14:22-33 NKJV
"Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
