This is exactly what Simone Biles was talking about in Tokyo. Speed, the take off, spacial awareness needs to be so exact. Simone was smart to know her limits. Sang Lan is incredible. She’s done so much since this accident and should be proud.

I broke my neck and am paralyzed much the same as Sang Lan. I was diving when I broke my neck but hey, the aftermath is much the same. No breakthrough stem cell treatment for the general masses of paralysed people, just a few lucky handfulls who got on to the trial treatments. I've been in a wheelchair for 24 years and am always notified if there are any new treatments and I tell you there is nothing worth holding your breath for.
Who cares if she sued? good on her. I'm glad she had a baby. I've known alot of paralysed people have kids(male and female). If she can use her profile as an athlete to bring disability awareness to the people of China & the World, then GO Sang Lan Go!
    Ps. I love Gymnastics.

@tori6741 when I was 5, my Dad slipped off a pool ladder and broke his neck. I still cry thinking about how horrified he must've felt at that moment when he could no longer feel his arms or legs. In one second he went from being a 6'1" athletic man who had been a Golden Gloves Boxer in his younger days, to a man with a wife and 5 children he could no longer provide for. He was angry and heartbroken. He tried so hard in therapy, and he always asked why weren't there any trial treatments, it was like paralyzed people were left behind. He passed away 2 months later due to kidney failure from septicemia....but I'll always remember him smiling and talking to us as if nothing was wrong. I look back and I am in awe of how strong he acted for us so we wouldn't worry or be scared.
I am so sorry that you suffered a broken neck; I will always keep you in my prayers.

The same happened to Elena Muknina but she's dead now and she couldn't move at all.Its so sad how such a tragic accident can change your whole life.

Soooo. Update: She sued everyone, including the 2 guardians appointed of not taking care of her properly, the venue, the Chinese team for abandoning her, etc... She sued Winston for sexual harassment that took place during her rehab there. She stated that because a coach from another team came into the vault area and tried to remove a mat during her vault that she was to land on, the distraction caused her to break her neck. Eventually, she received a settlement. She left the US and went back to China, attended Bejeng Uni, became a celebrity and spokesperson for the disabled, married her manager and gave birth to a son.

Gymnastics is such a beautiful, yet tragic sport. It’s so much rigorous training. It looks beautiful & larger than life. And it’s risky A F! Much respect to all gymnasts out there! That interaction w/ Christopher Reeves made me CRY! 😢

This sport is similar to follow Jesus even there is no comparation. But is necesary love, is necesary sacrifice, is necesary to let many things that you like to do and is necesary to be able for die, be refused for alot of people, be strong when the things go wrong. Is hard but finally you do it because the faith, love are bigger than all the suffering in the way and at the end you gonna live with your creator for the eternity. I know this gymnast gonna jum again.

    "..surrounded her lifeless body."
Her "motionless" body would be more accurate. "Lifeless" implies she died, which she didn't actually do, obviously. Crap journalism right there.

MissLilRedRooster at the time this happened, the outlook was death over life..I do agree, that the reporter shouldn’t have gone that far, though.

Good thing it happened in the U.S.! At that time she'd likely have been punished for "humiliating" China and the attention ensured she was protected as they knew people would check on her from time to time. She also benefited from the very best of care, which let's face it, she likely wouldn't have had in China. The therapy she got after the injury was second to none and she now has a little boy of her own!

sprinklefriend wtf are you saying? you should be your shame of your ignorance and prejudice.

    • @JennaLeigh
      @JennaLeigh 5 років тому +28

@@bluefloydwong that comment is neither ignorant nor prejudiced. The Chinese government has had a chokehold on gymnastics for decades, and there are countless reports of children torn from their families and not allowed to see them for years and years. Families endure it because it is a desperately needed source of income. Abuse and cruelty are notoriously part of "the system" there. The comment wasn't malicious, it was accurate.
Also, it's "you should be ashamed". NOT "you should be your shame".

That's not accurate. Since she was on the national team, she already had exposure and coverage, she would eventually become a celebrity in China and be a popular speaker for the disabled people. All the talk about 'humiliating China' and whatnot is just false. Many Chinese athletes have failed their events and still received praise from the general public for their work ethic.
If she wasn't an actual professional gymnast, however, she probably would have been completely ignored, not received top level treatment, and her future life would be basically ruined. Your statement is half right.

For every Sang Lan, who has access to the best of the best medical care, physical therapy, adaptive devices & is visited by 'stars', there are hundreds, if not thousands, who 'fall trough the cracks'. Medicare doesn't pay for everything, forever, contrary to popular belief. I've reached the end of my Medicare 'benefits'. At 76, I'm totally dependent.
