- Air Mediterranean trip report, operating for Norwegian, from Madrid to Tenerife, in the Canary Islands on the Classic Boeing 737-400!
An unexpected flight on the Boeing 737-400 on behalf of Norwegian. 2 weeks before this trip I've received an e-mail informing that the flight would be operated by Air Mediterranean on a classic Boeing 737-400.
It was an amazing experience and, maybe, the first and last chance that I will have of flying on a classic Boeing 737-400.

Por que los mensajes de la tripulación estaban en inglés? No en dos idiomas en inglés y en español?
Porque la tripulación hablaba inglés y griego.
El unico idioma obligatoria oara cualquier vueoo comercial del mundo es el ingles.
Aunque hablar el idioma local, al menos alguien de la tripulacion, siempre ayuda.

Haha To be honest, they were not bad, but they were old, so you could feel some internal parts of the seat haha

Hmmmm. I would have thought announcements only in English would be a HUGE safety issue and would be in breach of local safety requirements. And I say that as an English speaker myself as the departure point is Spain so one must assume a large portion if not all passengers were Spanish and therefore there could be no assumption all speak any English (or enough to understand) - and therefore could not understand important safety information or even an announcement to evacuate if need be. That's a big fail. I would have thought as a minimum it would need to be English and the local language.
Yep, and usually, it's like that. However, the law says that it is compulsory only in English. To put it also on the local language is courtesy of the airline. Of course, as you've said, it helps a lot.
The reason why they didn't say it in Spanish on this flight is simply that they didn't know Spanish. they were Greek.

@@forza223bowe5 That's absolutely true. However, the point that Xr6lad said abut the local language it's also true. Even that English is "the world's common language", there are still millions of people that don't speak it.

Que avión más raro,en El avión fue mucha gente,o poca?
Es el modelo anterior a los ultra-conocidos Boeing 737-800NG (los de Ryanair, Norwegian, Air Europa...).
La verdad es que no recuerdo la ocupación del vuelo... =/
I haven't flown in a 400 since maybe British Midland or Aer Lingus years ago
This was my first time on the -400 so... haha
Hopefully, it won't be the last one. But being realistic... it's really complicated to fly in one of these nowadays in Europe.

Very interesting TR as usual! The thing about ACMI flights is you can fly aboard those classic planes. The music of the CFM56-3B is something I almost forgot.

Sí. Con todos los B737 MAX que Norwegian tiene parados, ha tenido que contratar los servicios de aerolíneas de este estilo para cubrir operativa.
Un placer para los que nos gusta tanto la aviación, poder probar aerolíneas nuevas que son muy difíciles de volar de otra manera.

I have flown twice on the 737-400 in 2012 on US Airways (CLT-TPA and back)... the plane(s) was/were really run down already at that point and I’m pretty sure it is/they are not in operation anymore. I didn’t like those flights, but I think mainly because I really didn’t like US Airways at all.

I think so, yes. Norwegian leased the plane with their own crew during the summer in Madrid :))
Looked very clean and tidy inside and yes the Wings did look a bit strange without Winglets.

Jaja Sí, todos tenemos una debilidad especial por nuestra tierra. Es totalmente normal. Es a lo que estamos acostumbrados desde pequeños; y cualquier otro lugar, por muy bonito que sea... siempre le falta un algo. Jejeje

The legroom would make it uncomfortable for me, but at least it was only a 2.5 hour flight. Everything else looked quite serviceable for Economy.
Wasnt bad. I've seen worse things on some legacy carriers 😅

La flota de Air Mediterranean son 2 aviones y los 2 son como este. Por lo que hablar de HUB me parece que no cabe jaja
Es una aerolínea Griega y sus oficinas supongo que estarán en Atenas, si eso es lo que preguntas, pero la verdad es que sabría decirlo con seguridad.

Así es. Por allí aún se ven con cierta frecuencia. En Europa es realmente complicado verlo en versión de pasajeros. Aún no llega a la escasez del MD80, pero va por ese camino... =/

Es tu primera vez en un 737-400 Classic? Si es así que te pareció volar en un avión legendario que es muy poco común el los cielos de europa? en latinoamérica todavía se pueden ver en los cielos a estas hermosas aeronaves con algunos operadores, en Venezuela te puedo mencionar a Avior Airlines, RUTACA Airlines, Estelar Airlines y Venezolana de Aviación los usan en sus intinerarios además de los legandarios 737-200 conocidos como la chancha, el cerdo, entre otros apodos por su cuerpo desproporcionado comparado con los motores relativamente pequeños, excelente vuelo en un viejo caballo de batalla de los cielos y saludos desde Venezuela.
Así es, esta fue mi primera vez (y espero que no la última, pero podría ser...).
Fue toda una experiencia, aunque la verdad se veía por dentro que estaba ya muy antiguo. Se notaba que llevaba mucho tiempo sin que le reformasen nada en su interior, lo que significa que ya debe de estar en sus últimos vuelos. Si sigue volando debe ser porque la cuota de arrendamiento debe ser realmente baja...

Pues lo cierto es que un avión de 30 años bien mantenido es perfectamente utilizable, mientras que un avión de 2 meses sin ningún mantenimiento no lo es.
No se si ves por donde quiero ir... lo importante es el mantenimiento, no el avión en sí.
El motivo por el que se van abandonando estos aviones es por que los nuevos diseños y tecnologías son mucho más eficientes, principalmente, en cuanto a consumo de combustible.

Si lo dices porque el personal del avión no hablaba Español, fue debido a que era gente Griega, país de origen de la aerolínea que operó el vuelo para Norwegian.

During this summer, Norwegian had this plane operating for them based in Madrid. It flew to Tenerife North, Stockholm and London-Gatwick.

Efectivamente, grabo todo con my Galaxy S9+. Aunque el que no se tambaleé yo creo que se debe más a la práctica que a la propia cámara, pues no uso ningún tipo de estabilización más que mis propias manos.

One thing I love about older planes are those individual air vents.
I would love to fly more often in these olddie planes... but I guess almost all were retired during the pandemic and they won't fly anymore. =(

Bueno, es el precursor de los que ves hoy en día en todos los aeropuertos: el Boeing 737NG. En otras palabras: los que tiene Ryanair, Norwegian, Air Europa...
Este el modelo previo a esa impresionante generación de Boeing 737.

Bueno, la principal diferencia es el tamaño de la cabina (mas larga en los actuales) y una mejor tecnología en los sistemas y eficiencia de combustible.

Of course they are.
It's safer to fly a 50 years old plane that is well maintained than a 1 month old brand-new plane that doesn't have good maintenance.
In aviation maintenance is everything.

That fact that the plane was 30 years, doesn't matter that the engines were 30 years old.

@@OnBoardHD nah plane engines will be replaced every 10 years but if not its just for safe if its older there is more chance to fail
@@EnjoyMyHitsYT That's not true at all. Maintenance is the real thing that matters in aviation. The only reason why aeroplanes are renewed is that it's worth because of the reduced fuel consumption and new technologies that they incorporate.

It’s a pretty long time ago when we made regular trips from Gatwick to Edinburgh in British Airways 737s. Was always impressed we would get a full breakfast on such a short flight. Fond memories. It’s a shame that Boeing have tainted it’s reputation with the Max. All the best. Mick🇬🇧

Well, I really think Boeing will come back stronger and the MAX will be a real success soon. It will be, by far, the most checked plane ever. I would say it will be the safest plan to fly. I will definitely do it! :)
My thoughts entirely. Think this has been a wake up call for not just Boeing but all aircraft manufacturers. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good as they say as it will keep everybody on their toes. Shame people had to die as a result. I would have no qualms about the Max when it eventually flies again. All the best. Mick🇬🇧

Would you prefer a plane with winglets or not?
Mmmm I think I would say that I prefer B737 with winglets just because it's what I'm used to seeing every day and also because I know the benefits that they have on fuel consumption.
However, the experience of flying on this plane was great! :)

En un avión lo que importa es que esté bien mantenido. Ni más ni menos.
Yo me subo antes a un avión de 40 años bien mantenido que a uno de 2 meses que no esté bien mantenido.

Pregunto porque siempre hay gente que me pregunta cómo superar su "miedo" a volar y nunca se muy bien qué responderles, pues nunca he tenido ese "problema"...
OnBoardHD - Flight Experience pues mira era incapaz porque tenía pánico a subirme en un avión, pero air Europa hace unos cursos para el miedo que son 100% recomendables(eso si no son baratos)
De hecho ahora casi todos los mese cojo un vuelo sea donde sea
