New Order - The Perfect Kiss (live Toronto '85)

  • An extraordinary video of 'The Perfect Kiss' from International Centre - Toronto - August 4th, 1985. For some reason, this wasn't included on "Live In Glasgow", which features three other songs ('We All Stand', 'Age Of Consent', and 'Temptation') instead. Much of this is a close-up of a shirtless Hooky...quite a contrast to the clinical approach the band exhibited in Johnathan Demme's short film of this song. This recording is said to originate directly from Paul Boyd, who filmed it...unfortunately Paul passed away a couple of years ago, so this is dedicated to his memory.

    Hooky playing his bass so high up the fret gave the band a distinctive sound that no one else had. It gave an additional dimension to their electronic sound.

    Hooky is a total VIBE. No one else has the Essence this bloke possesses.
    I think we can all agree though that New order/the music was not his driving force whereas the rest of the group were the band and music first, then everything else 2nd.
    Either way so happy they blessed us with all of these crunchy tunes while they were all on the same page even if it didn’t last as long as the universe would have hoped 💙

    I always got the feeling that Hook was the rock side of New Order and Sumner wanted to go into other directions with electronic sounds, Morris loved playing with drum machines so might have tipped the scale toward the latter, and Gilbert, well she's the synth side, so maybe that's why Hook's no longer with them. Music Complete is a great album, far closer to their late 1980s sound than their more recent albums, but they still were best back when Hook was there -- or maybe that's my nostalgia for better times talking.

    • @JFSCOTTJonny
      @JFSCOTTJonny 2 роки тому +21

      You'd be right, that's how Hooky describes himself mostly in his book 'Substance'. He ended up fighting to get his bass on tracks that were becoming more and more synthetic each album. In my opinion, the mix of both is where the magic is

    • @costa7060
      @costa7060 6 місяців тому

      It's what made the band great.
      Sure you can program a drum machine and make a bass batch , but then it's not a band any more
      May as well be a DJ.
      This at the time and still today is a unique and truly organic mix of sound.
      That bass is what makes the song , the heart of new order was and will always be the bass .

    Peter is gratuitous, narcissistic, drowns out his bandmates. It shouldn't work at all, but I've never heard the bass sound like this before or since. Maybe it's where the camera is, maybe it's just that night, but my God something special happened here. He humps his bass for 8 minutes and it still seems like an understatement for this performance. He even screws up a few times - doesn't matter.
