      @@danielrn133 no argument that he did a great job getting safely on the ground. My point is that comments like "too much paperwork" when dealing with an emergency shouldn't even be a consideration. We don't know how many young pilots will see/hear that comment (or hear it from a CFI) and not get the help that they need at a critical point - all because they might have to fill out a form.

      He did. Twice. ATC talked him out of it. Once you say "mayday" or "declaring an emergency", ATC should treat it as an emergency until you're on the ground. Period.

      There is no paperwork to fill out when declaring an emergency. Maybe there will be for the off field landing but that was going to happen regardless of declaring and emergency or not

      Lot of people don't call an ambulance when they're having a heart attack for the same reasons. Denial, not wanting to cause a scene, embarrassment, etc. Speaking from personal experience. "It's too late, I don't want to wake the neighbors up over a little chest pain... will call tomorrow if it still hurts."

    I don't particularly appreciate that the controller seemingly questioned whether this was an emergency once it was stated; there is no need to repeat it. The pilot should then have been given complete priority, removing other aircraft from the local airspace.

    I don’t know why people think there is “tons of paperwork” if you declare an emergency. There isn’t. Sometimes there is none. Sometimes the FSDO will ask for a brief written statement of what happened. The exception may be if the emergency was a result of your own doing, but even then it isn’t a reason not to declare an emergency if one exists.

  • @WalidFeghali
    @WalidFeghali 2 місяці тому +20

    Pilot: Declaring emergency
    Controller: Are you declaring an emergency?
    Pilot: That's correct, declaring an emergency
    Controller: Roger, and are you are declaring an emergency or are you not?
    Like.. come on. Controller should have done better in this situation.

    • @samchurchward2599
      @samchurchward2599 2 місяці тому +6

      Agreed. Unacceptably poor response by ATC. This highlights yet again why "declaring an emergency" is poor phraseology when the ICAO standard of "MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY" is clear and unambiguous. Here we see a completely pointless back and forth debating whether or not they're an emergency aircraft when it could have been done in one succinct transmission, freeing up the pilot to troubleshoot the problem.

    Glad this worked out-but landings on roads is NOT preferable, as many die hitting utility lines that are impossible to see. That’s how my CFI passed. Wide open country, clear visibility, huge Oklahoma turnpike “runway” and he hit the only traversing power line for miles. Don’t save the plane-save yourself! Just-say’n…

    It's difficult to know when a situation will develop into an actual emergency. This guy was reluctant to even declare an emergency, much less start using maydays on the radio. He did a great job.

    When people fear paper work more than potentially losing their lives. 🤦‍♂️
    If I smell oil and the engine is running hot or rough I’m declaring a mayday, pitching for best glide, using the minimum throttle necessary to maintain altitude and making a direct line to the numbers. Glad he had the wherewithal to select a less busy stretch of road and the skills to pull it off, but the early on decision making could use some work.

    An emergency can be either a Distress or an Urgency condition as defined in the “Pilot/Controller Glossary.” A pilot who encounters a Distress condition should declare an emergency by beginning the initial communication with the word “Mayday,” preferably repeated three times.

    Appears FCM is staffed by contract controllers. When a pilot comes on frequency declaring an emergency on initial call-up, that should have been all he needed to hear. Why he came back to verify his emergency status is beyond me. Secondly, the dude wouldn't shut the hell up. Let the pilot fly his airplane and give him what he needs. He kept babbling on about things he already communicated to him, doing nothing more than distracting him from his primary tasks of nursing a sick engine and finding an alternate landing sight. The pilot did an excellent job, despite the controller.
    Yeah, this is one time I will definitely dunk on the controller.

    I think the controller should have been more helpful. He seemed to want no part of providing any possible landing spots. The "let me know what you are going to do" does not seem fitting here. The controller could have at least said "it is your call, but there is an East/West Highway off to your left, another 4 lane highway at your 2 o'clock, and a golf course at..etc.". ATC should be at least aware of possible spots for small acft that can't make it to the field, with the caveat that it is always the pilot's call.

    • @6yjjk

      Honestly, the pilot has the best view and the best knowledge of how far the bird will glide.

    • @kerryrobinson3782
      @kerryrobinson3782 2 місяці тому +1

      @@6yjjk No doubt he did have the best view and best read on how far he could glide. That does not mean though that he had better knowledge of potential landing spots then a controller who works 40 hours a week handing acft in the same area. As an ex FSS (in Canada basically a VFR controller with no radar that also does wx obs), I think I would be familiar with the area. That said, it would be easier to assist the pilot with roads/hwys etc in a remote area than it would be with a whole city in your view, but I really didn't like the fact that the controller was pretty passive in the whole exchange. Just my opinion.
