That was the camera I lusted for back when I first started thinking about getting into photography in 1997. I never got one though. Even the entry level N50 (F50) was expensive for me back then. I had the N50 and the kit 35-80mm as my only gear for 6 years until I got a Canon Digital Rebel in 2004.

I’ve owned 2 of these and can’t recommend them enough. Point and shoots are trending now but in a few years these will be the premium cameras to get!

The only thing going against them is the weight. Apart from that excellent camera

Well I finally after 4 months got myself a Mint Nikon F5 from Japan. It was sent Tuesday 26th January and it arrived on my doorstep in Queensland, AUSTRALIA on Friday 29th January.
It came in it’s proper numbers matching F5 box, the white Nikon F5 body cap, and instruction manual in Japanese that looks like it has hardly been used.
There was only one little scratch on the bottom back corner, no wearing visible around the serial number or that lower control panel flap.
I have promptly installed Eneloop batteries and a roll of Fujicolour Superia X-Tra 400 film. I have tried the two lenses that I have for film cameras, that are my new Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G prime lens and my Tamron AF 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 ID lens. I have also tested my Nikon SB-5000 and Nikon SB-600 Speedlights and they function very well on the F5.
I have upgraded my camera strap system and now use a Peak Design Slide V3 between my three Nikon cameras. I think that this is far better system than the original Nikon straps.
I do have a DK-19 Eyecup on the way in the post as it will help me as I wear glasses.
I am very happy with my F5.

@@doubleexposed3830 thanks mate on your comment. I have to agree that it is a really good F5 as I can compare it with my Nikon D300 that I have had since new in 2009. I have a shutter count of under 1700 - seventeen hundred on my D300 that is always stored in the camera bag after use.
I just prefer the good old film cameras because they are what I grew up with. I have had to transfer the D300 out of it’s original camera bag and put it into my LowePro Backpack as the LowePro was not quite deep enough for the F5.
The Viewfinder on the F5 does sit a little bit higher overall than the D300....lol
So how are you finding your Nikon F5?

The F5 has been my dream 35mm camera since I worked at a camera shop back in the early 2000's (when they were still making the F5's!) and I finally got one a few weeks ago. I love it so much. It's really a dream come true after so long to finally have one of my own to shoot on :)

It’s a whole lot of camera for $300-$500 Aud.
I’ve recently bought one and running a roll of film through it now to test it out.
Weight aside you won’t find a more feature rich film camera in the Nikon range.

I got an F4 instead because it matrix metre's my Nikon manual focus lenses and takes pre AI lenses as well. Also has matrix metre but probably older than the F5 The self regulating shutter on the F5 appeals though. I suspect the AF on the F5 is way better than the F4 also

I found myself looking at this video for a second time tonight. I am still holding off until after the New Year before I get myself a F5, however I did get myself a new prime lens a Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G lens las Friday from Teds Cameras in Brisbane and got a $100 gift card for buying the lens so I used that towards a Hoya UV Filter to go on to the lens and paid the difference.
I used that lens over the weekend on my D300 and was very happy in the way it performed. With the D300 being a digital camera that pushed the 85mm out to 127.5mm. I can’t wait to use it on a F5.

I've always thought the Minolta Dynax 9 was the better product. Especially (if needed) with the 1/1200th maximum shutter speed. I could never afford either, but my Nikon F4s wasn't a bad substitite despite it's weight,

I thought that your review of the Nikon F5 was very good but I would have liked a little bit more in depth on the cameras functions.
It is awesome to see a fellow Australian doing a review on the F5.
I have gone back to Film Cameras that just take PHOTOS, as Digital is not the same experience.
I am holding off to the New Year before I purchase a Nikon F5 as it will more than likely be coming from Japan. If you don’t mind me asking did you get your F5 from Australia or from Japan?
I currently own a built like a tank Nikon D300 that I purchased new back in 2009, fitted with a Nikon AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VRII Lens, and I also have the Nikon MB-D10 Multi Power Battery grip. I have taken just shy of “1700 shutter count” (seventeen hundred) on the D300.
A Nikon F60D Panorama that I did get from Japan. It is fitted with a Tamron Super Silver Series AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens.
I do have a very good Nikon F80 but at the moment it has a broken latch on the Film Door. I have been looking for a replacement film door or Date back door without any luck, so if you know of anyone that has a broke unrepairable Nikon F80 please drop me a line.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it the f6 that has the self correcting shutter and the f5 will just lock up if the shutter speed was wrong. Other wise great video it definitely makes me want to throw some slide film in my f5

personally its always going to be the F3 as the best 35mm camera ever and my main camera. a very close second is the F4. The thing that makes the F5 not quite as good is that it has too many automatic features to it.
