Handy to have a bunch of these types of knobs around when you need them, so take a few hours one afternoon and make some. Use up some scrap wood and save a few bucks as well.

I Build It
Thank you for sharing.
I Build It . I just built this thanks a lot for the instruction. IMG_1657.HEIC
I hope you didn't see my hand slapping my forehead when I realized the purpose of the other hole cut into your jig. You make these types of things look so simple. Thank you again (and again) for setting this information out for everyone to see and learn. Mike
Dude you just keep blowing my mind with the simple yet very useful jigs and tools you come up with.
Simple and clever. For folks like myself, who happens to don't have a bandsaw (yet!) it is a game changer. Thanks John!
Simply awesome! You're a genius man, simplicity is always the best and the design could be easily changed for more than three.
G’day John first off thank you for your very simple description and method of making knobs you make it so clear and so precise I duplicated basically everything you did with the exception I had a pine plank and used that instead of plywood ... this might seem like a crazy thing to say but I think I have more fun making jigs for making things than I do for the actual making of things ... anyway I think you’re awesome keep up the good work, Tim from Australia
Simple and elegant. Well done, sir.
I commend your German ingenuity John. I shall build this jig for myself.
Well thought out. I'll remember this for life.
Oooh, liking that jig. I need a bunch of knobs and I have a bin of hole saw leftovers that need a purpose. May be easier to start with a fresh block of wood, but this jig is perfectly suited to work with what I have on hand.
Perfect idea John. Thanks for sharing this. Was looking for an easy way to make these rather than buying them.
Fantastic jig, works like a dream !!!! 10/10 Thanks for sharing with us.
Very useful! I've always just used my CNC for knobs since it was the only way to make them look decent, but it takes so much time to set up that it gets annoying (first world problems, I know). I think I'll be using this technique in the future.
Use the CNC to cut your jig! xD
Nice jig, John. It happens that I just posted a "how to make knobs" video. I planned to use the 2 hole saws as you did, but leave tbe knobs round, for comfort. In the end, I opted to post a much simpler type, for quick (and cruder) knobs.
I like the way your jig produces the tri-lobed shape.
thanks works like a bomb, newbie woodworker from south africa.
brilliant! the thumbnail was ellegantly enough to discover the trick! :D
Way to go, John. Nice idea and build.
that's pretty neat, wish i had the brains to come with a jig like that when building the pantorouter, which I think I had to make about 15 wooden knobs, all by hand. much fun.
Simple but genius. Great jig.
Thank you, John!
Wow, really nice jig.
I have some walnut scraps that are calling to be turned into knobs. Thank you!
Love the idea. Now if I can remember it next time i need some knobs.
Comfortable handle turned out!
Nice jig, well thought out John!
I really appreciate your videos. I wish you would show the finished product before you start creating the pieces though. It helps me understand what you're building and why. I have no idea what a Star Knob is... but I felt I needed to know so I watched this video. I had to jump to the end to understand first and then go back and start over. Just my opinion. Love your work!
The thumbnail shows it finished.
Dang this is nice. Better than a recycling can holder. Thanks!
Nice one. Elegant solution.
That's a nice tip John thanx for sharing
Genius simplicity!
Very handy idea!! Thanks
Such a simple jig, great idea! 🤓👍
Great job john
Nice, Simple jig!
Pure genius, simple but soooo clever!
4:19 Idea: If you drill a hole through the drilling plate where the hole saw is working, and that hole overlaps the hole saw the path. This improvement will allow the sawdust to go out immediately, and drilling will be high-speed, and the dust is not clogging the hole saw bit.
Thank you, as always a great lesson from you John.
Huh. That's remarkably straightforward. I regret now spending $3 per plastic knob for a recent project. ;)
That will come in handy. Thank you
Awesome jig. Thanks for sharing!
I always enjoy getting a good knob polishing!
Nice build for those who don't have a band saw yet
Simple and practical.
Awesome Jig and T-shirt! ;)
Thanks!
Well, I guess it's time to batch out 100 knobs. Thanks for this!
Clever, I like it!
Now I don't need a CNC to make fancy knobs. Thanks!
These are great. The plastic ones are expensive and I have broken a few.
thank you, that is a cool little jig. I do have a question though- if you will put the T-nut on the underside, instead of the top side, won`t it grip and tighten itself when in use? that way, you can also use standard wood glue, and not epoxy on the body of the knob.
Thank you John, I wondered how these were made, and now I've seen how, it was fairly obvious lol
Brilliant!
I love that jig
Good thinking.
I missed you John.
Thanks for the ideal. I am thinking that I will make the jig just a little bit larger. I will drill out the handle holes by drilling 3 separate ones at 120° apart. And not have to turn the knob and drill
good idea :)
Why did I read knob job? Great video!
And now we wait to see Matthias Wandel's approach ;)
nice knob
You are a big inspiration to me. I love building your project. I am 14 and a young woodworker do you have and smart tips for me?
Great jig!
Genius!!
Deal with that Mr. Wandel... LOL!!!
Matthias will have made 100 knobs just by looking at a piece of wood before anyone else can tighten the wingnut on this jig
@@Ed19601 who is that matias guy that so many people mention and put on such a high pedestal?
@@leonruvalcaba1549 Matthias Wandel is a German Canadian woodworking genius :-)
Also your go to guy for everything that has to do with mice mazes
Good idea. I"m a LOT more comfortable on my drill press than on my band saw
cool man! thanks for sharing.
Wooden handles are very comfortable !
With some careful planning and measuring, couldn't you cut out a bunch of disks with most of them overlapping and get the same cut piece and reduce plywood waste? You know that's what Matthias would do. Of course you'd still need your jig to finish the cuts on the rest.
thank you
Great :-) , So Easy
Nice jig, but if you make it on a bigger board then you can have three position for the drill and you need not to rotate the knob and push out the rest piece every time.
True, but that makes the layout for the jig a bit more tricky.
And usually, it is more likely to find smaller pieces of scrap wood laying around, that would fit this jig project.
But you still have to place the drill three times per knob. If you put three blanks around a center hole though you can drill a third of three knobs (which equates to one complete knob on average) with a single push of the drill press. Much more efficient!
My original idea was to make a second location on the other side for cutting the knobs with 4 scallops instead of 3, but figured that was not really needed. However, if you are so inclined, that can be taken further with another location for cutting 5 scallops, or even 6 with a smaller hole saw!!!
:D
You could also use a whole board for cutting a bunch of knobs and lay out the middle points of them in a square pattern if you would like to have 4 scallops or in a hexagonal profile for six more shallow scallops. But then it would be still usefull to have this jig on hand to finish the ones from the edge :) I like your idea a lot!
damn it Johnathan! you and Matthias freekin killen me lol the s$^t you guys come up with I just have to build them all.
The block on the bottom I have made it with some sort of plastic & that leaves a slick surface
Good idea, thanx a lot! :))
Neat solution if you dont have a CNC handy.... I just use my CNC and get a nut/bolt head pocket fit to fit at the same time...
Ingenious!
Well done !!!! I was in need a good idea and you shared your idea. Thank you.
congrats.
L.ZACCARO
cool jig!!!
I like the simplicity. Pardon my ignorance but the drill bit used on your drill press for making 3/8" holes, is it a Forstner bit or a special type of bit?
You could make the jig bigger with 3 hole saw positions and eliminate the rotation and pencil mark.
THX
I did it using Mdf. Lot of dust when drilling with the Hole Saw.
I wonder whether plastic cutting board material (HDU?), perhaps laminated together for thickness, would work well in lieu of plywood for making star knobs?
Haha! Best jig name ever
Muito bonita a camisa do AC DC.
Disappointingly low number of knob gags in the comments, still early I guess.
Wood, knob, nuts . . . I expected at least an 'R' rating.
Ok I leave sanding the knob to my wife, especially when it's hard wood
Cool
:) good work!
Hey John, would it be more durable if that jig was made out of hardwood? Did you already try that option?
Buenisima idea!!
Baltic Birch would Be the Best, But... great alliteration!
Why is your drill press moving around, warbling? You can put a shim under it from that pile of rubble in you shop.
Nice wood knob.
Would there be any benifit to putting sanding paper on and inside of the hole saw bit?
Are you using a flat head screwdriver for the second knob? :)
knob jig....that,s funny in the uk :)
did you use epoxy for drying time?
Cutting on the bandsaw would be faster. Just ask Matthias W for a showdown.
especially if you stack 5 of them together and cut all at once
mughat What about a 10-knobs competition. John with his jig, and Mathias with his pantorouter? Of course we know the bandsaw will be faster, but not perfect.
@@arquit3d Why 10? might be too close to call.... I say make it 100, winner take all, so the winner goes home with 200 knobs to give away to their viewers!
Could we or I use pine to make them or a more good looking wood then plywood
very clever
wish I had seen this 2 days ago... would have saved me from wanting to throw my bloody scroll saw across the workshop.
