  • The ASUW Shell House is home to the legendary U.S. Men’s Rowing crew from the University of Washington that won gold and beat Germany in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. At the time, Adolf Hitler hosted the XI Olympiad to prove Aryan supremacy in athletics. America’s claim to victory baffled members of the fascist elite, Hitler himself, and the rest of the world-challenging the glory of the Third Reich, while putting Washington state on the map.
The ASUW Shell House served as the training ground for these Olympian rowers, as well as a craft space for world-renowned Olympic boat builder George Yeoman Pocock. It is slated for a renovation, which is in part, funded by the Washington state Capital Budget.
In this Field Report, we take a step back into history, and a leap forward into the future of the ASUW Shell House.
Additional interviews were provided by UW. Hosted by Angela Nolasco.
