3 A Case of Identity from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) Audiobook

  • Опубліковано 12 лис 2017
  • First published in 1893, being the third story in the collection of Sherlock Holmes exploits entitled The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, we find a case which gives the Baker St. consulting detective very little trouble. He is however, some critics have observed, a little less than ethical in dealing with his client at the denouement.
Nevertheless the story of Hosmer Angel is quite instructive as to the methods and character of Holmes.
It's read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio. ©Magpie Audio 2017

Yes, I concur. I feel so lucky to have found these GEMS!! Faithful listener from California since December 2019.. and listened when visiting home in Italy as well !! I love your stories @Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio, your voice and your narrating style.. you bring the story to life. You do more than narrating these stories: you act superbly in them. My favorite still remains the first, A Study in Scarlet with the Mormon history.. I wonder why Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did not write long, involved stories like that after the that one - maybe it was just too much work and research or maybe he just focused the stories’ setting in London after that.

Honestly, this has got to be my favorite Sherlock Holmes story. I've listened to it when I was a kid, and I have it pretty much memorized by heart. I've even been working on making it a stage production for theater, but adapted for a modern audience. Been working on it since the end of last year for my local college's theater club, but haven't really touched it since last month. Now, here I am with more tips from a new theater director who took a look at it. Hopefully, I can get this made into a theater or "film" production.
This audiobook sure is a fascinating take, I should also add. Well done with it!

When I first read this story, as a much younger man, I was taken aback over Holmes decision to withhold the truth from her. She came to him for truth that she did not get. I still feel that way. She would have Been shocked, but then able to take control of her life.

I find that after listening to your recitations of these brilliant works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle that when I start any other version of these stories I am disappointed in the lack of depth and breadth of the portrayal by others. You really have captured my idea of how these characters likely would have sound in real life. Thank you for taking the time to read to us all these works including those of other great authors, eg, Chesterton, Carrol and others. I find I can listen to them repeatedly every now and again and they are still fresh and alive.
Best wishes and a Happy New Year for 2024 just as you wished for us in one of the Sherlock Holmes pastiches last year before I’d heard of you.
    Sincerely,
    John T. Inscrutable

A question to all here: is anyone here aware of any later author who has successfully imitated ACD's mastery of English and thereby added to the Sherlock Holmes canon? It is wonderful how Greg brings these stories vividly to life. Yet I am also impressed as to how ACD creates such full of life characters while keeping his so spare, economical. All the right words in alk the right places and not one word too many. A master 🏆🏆🏆

(Spoiler alert) I'm a little disappointed in Holmes at the end of this one. She paid him for an answer. Seems cowardly for him not to give her his findings, no matter how revolting they may be. He just let her go on cluelessly to waste her youth and child bearing years for the good of her unscrupulous stepfather and manipulative mother. Bad form Holmes old man. Bad form.

I can understand your point, but Holmes solved this case in his mind and gave the girl his answer right away :
"Try to let Mr. Hosmer Angel vanish from your memory, as he has done from your life."
"Let the whole incident be a sealed book, and do not allow it to affect your life."
And I don't think he took any money from her since he hadn't found her man.
I enjoyed it when Holmes berated the stepfather and threatened him, he would think twice before trying to deceive the girl again.

    • @LambentLark
      @LambentLark 4 роки тому +27

She was an adult woman that held down a job and just wanted a life with a good man. Holmes treated her as if she was a child that must be protected from the truth. How can a person make good choices if the facts are withheld from them. It wasn't Holmes life or decision, it was her life and she was looking to him for facts to make her own decision's. If payment was the price of the truth, she should have coughed up the crowns.

I've been running this same scam with my stepdaughter ever since the gasfitters' ball last spring. Fortunately, she's not the brightest girl in the world. Seriously, when I told her I can only whisper (you know, because of the quinsy) and that my name was "Hosmer", I thought I was going to lose it. But somehow I managed to keep a straight face and hold it together, and she bought it. I think my favourite part is entering a taxi by the right hand door, then exiting it by the left hand door and listening to her scream "Oy! Me poor 'osmer's done disappeared again!"

Entirely too many commercials. Ruins the flow of the story.

This isn’t exactly relevant but I was wondering why I Digress was taken off Podbean?

      I took it off.
Enjoyed doing it. But then it was time to do something else!

      Sherlock Holmes Stories Magpie Audio
Ah, Okay. I hadn’t quite managed to finish it, I’d just gotten up to chapter 11. Is it still uploaded on UA-cam?

Not impressed with this one. Amzed to learn that Conan-Doyle was married - given his general contempt for women.

Love how the guy runs like a baby when Holmes basically gets ready to beat his ass.
