Charlie I am sure I could listen all day to you talk about anything because you are so interesting and share your knowedge and experience. A month ago I made my very first flute, a quena from 3/4" bamboo.It was a great success so I donated it as prize at one of our local events. I have now completed my second with a beautiful reddish brown stain. What you say about learning to play a quena is true. I find that lots of practice is needed but the rewards are worth the effort. My next flute will be a chambered native american stye flute. I am a 68yr. old grandpa with a blood cancer. Showing my grandchildren and others how to make a musical instrument and learn how to play it will give them happy memories of me.Thanks from the Canadian Rocky Mountains 😎🎶❤

Your videos inspired me to make these flutes. I make them spot on each time and play them perfect. They have always two most time three octaves. I can't play the other kinds of flutes. LOVE these flutes LOVE your videos.
Can't wait to see the details on making! Yes, holding the mouth right is so hard! I've made one with pvc and can't get one of the holes large enough for the note affecting all holes above. Thanks Charlie, you are the man! Watching Alexandro Querevalu just blows me away with his quena!
Thanks Charlie for the introductory lesson. I bought a Quena in Lima Peru from a street musician. After listening to the beautiful haunting sounds of such a simple instrument, I had to have one. I understand your emphasis on practice practice practice. I'm having difficulty getting a clear nice tone. I hope to get the right technique but right now, I make noise and the dog howls 🙄

Want to make them but until now I have a purchased one. Still trying to get down how to dependably make notes sound. More work needed there. Tells us more about hole placement.

i picked it up on day 1, was able to play first octave easy with the only challenge slightly was getting the the top 2 notes of the first octave to be as clear as i wanted, ofc, the one i play is an anasazi scale with quena mouth piece, it feels so natural to me, yet i have had a side blown flute for a few months or so, struggling to get a good sound lol funny how things work
Hi, I mostly make rim-blown flutes... you can make them in any tuning you'd make a whistle or NAF. Matter of fact the "Anasazi" style tuning is beautiful.

It's best to begin by practicing in the mirror. Then you can see how your stream of air is being directed and make the appropriate adjustments.
