What amazes me, is how repair-friendly this machine is. They even literally engraved the valves' codes into the chassis... speaks a lot about the mentality at the time vs the horrors of repairing today's electronics

My grandparents were the first in their neighborhood to get a TV. It was a sparsely populated neighborhood so some neighbors came from miles away to see it. It had the full circular CRT screen exposed in the cabinet. As a very young kid I thought that was strange since the image was rectangular. Even though they lived near a major city there was only one channel broadcasting in the late Forties and early Fifties. My grandmother became addicted to soap operas for the rest of her life.

I have the 1949 Morotola VT73 restored tabletop model. The chassis layout is very similar to the Airline. After replacing the capacitors with modern components including the electrolytics, cleaning the potentiometers, the television works great. Televisions without power transformers were interesting because they were "series strung". If you take one tube out, all the them don't get filament voltage. I love this age of experimental television, seeing what works and doesn't work. Late 40s sets are my favorite to work on.

I been a electronics technician for 42 yrs. This is very cool. I love the old technology! The the volume control wiper on this set needs cleaning to clear up the issue with noise from the wiper of the potentiometer. Depending on hours of use the cathode Ray tube cathode may have less electron emission due to hours of use. The electrolytic capacitors are more than likely dried out needing replacements. The myler type caps are very reliable. Realigning the intermediate frequency coils of 1st/2nd/ 3rd Ifs. Should only be done if someone. Used a "DIDDLE STICK" TO MESS WITH THESE ADJUSTABLE IF COILS. Sound take-off is done at the 3rd. If a 4.5mhz. Circuit. Uhf. Band converters could be purchased to get uhf. A bad/weak CRT would produce WEAK brightness with smearing. Image. Backing the contrast back would help with better focus however, basically a weak image with washing out. The TUBE SOCKET WOULD ALWAYS HAVE ISSUES DUE TO HEAT . WIGGLE THE TUBES OR TAP ON THEM TO SEE ISSUES. SOCKET REPLACING IS BEST FOR STABLE/RELIABLE PERFORMANCE. GOD I LOVE WORKING ON THESE OLD SETS. I HAVE WORKED ON EVERY TYPE OF CONSUMER ELECTRONICS EVER BUILT.

From the tube listing, this actually looks like it's an intercarrier IF setup, not a split sound, which is quite amazing for a 1940's TV.

Interesting that one advertisement stated "Plug N Play".

My uncle, who passed away a few years ago was drafted into the Army in the late 50's. My mom tells me at that time while serving in 1957 he saved up and purchased and had sent an RCA Color TV. I am told it was quite amazing at the time. The 1st in the neighborhood and the 1st anyone had ever seen. She has told me about how the entire neighborhood would come over when certain shows were on just to see what such and such star really looked like. I remember them still having it for a short time before it was replaced when I was very young in the early 70's.

Interesting tuner design. Looks like the ones used in AM car radios with moving ferrite rather than the more modern turret tuner.

There is an even older Dumont Television Network ID available over on UA-cam. It appears at the beginning and at the end of a 1948 simulcast episode of ABC Radio's "Don McNeill Breakfast Club", which took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where BOTH the Democratic and Republican National Conventions took place that year, in order to be seen live in the Eastern United States. It was a hotly-contested Presidential Election year, and both Dumont TV and ABC Radio both teamed up to take advantage of all the potential viewers that would be watching the morning program.

I have the slightly more common Raytheon-Belmont version. With slight cabinet revisions, these were also branded Coronado and Truetone. They were also sold as kit sets. It's a very finicky set with it's odd turret-tuner. By the way, the large tuning knob is there for leverage! Often the picture and/or sound is intermittent on these, but when they're up to playing well, they show a good picture.
