- This episode is now dedicated to Penny Marshall as she passed away in December of 2018. Penny Marshall will be remembered as the co-star of Laverne and Shirley!
Orson Bean, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Penny Marshall, Richard Dawson, and Betty White
Penny & Betty in the same episode FANTASTIC LOVE IT 😍👍❤😍👍❤😍👍
Love them
And Charles. ❤
RIP Penny Marshall, you will be dearly missed. I never even knew she appeared on Match Game.
11 years later, Betty White would be listening to Bea Arthur say "Shady Pines, Ma!" for 7 years :)
Fun trivia. Betty White wanted to play the plart of Blanche on Golden Girls. Betty apparently had very high self esteem. I look at Betty and I see granny not sexy in any way. Things turn out as they are are supposed to.
@@ts.elliot5870they actually had Betty in mind for the role of blanche because of her role as sue ann nivens on the Mary Tyler Moore show, quite a saucy personality characterized as “sardonic, man-obsessed and very competitive”. It was only when rue auditioned for rose and didn’t quite fit the part they let her audition for the part of blanche and she turned out to be perfect for it. They convinced Betty to audition for rose after that, and the rest is history.
Love to see the "Warm and Shy" Penny Marshall. Amazing that her career exploded such as it did. What a fantastic talent!
Up to this time, her biggest roles were Myrna on "The Odd Couple" and Janice on "Paul Sand in Friends And Lovers". In a couple of years, she would become a major star with "Laverne And Shirley". What's interesting is that she was up for two other iconic television roles: WitchiePoo in "H.R. Pufnstuf" (which she refused because she didn't think she was right for it), and Gloria Stivic in "All In The Family" (She was married to Rob Reiner, who played Mike Stivic). She would really hit her stride as a director of big budget films in the 1980s and 1990s.
charles nelso reilly was the bomb
So true. He was a class act.
I sure appreciate these Match Games shows! My 7 year old twins and older daughter is 11 and they absolutely love this show! They loved Betty White in Golden Girls and now they are getting to see Betty on MG!
Have your girls saw Betty on The Mary Tyler Moore Show?
Betty has also appeared on several versions of Password, as well as Tattletles.
RIP to Penny Marshall who passed away today at 75...
Panelists:
1. Orson Bean
2. Brett Somers
3. Charles Nelson Reilly
4. Penny Marshall
5. Richard Dawson
6. Betty White
I know it was a different era. Nevertheless, Marshall seemed a little taken aback when Rayburn kissed her and got SO CLOSE. Incidentally, I have recently listened to Orson Bean on a couple of podcasts. He is amazingly funny, does great impressions and is quite the raconteur.
Thank you for sharing that! I’ll enjoy hearing them.
I did watch, here on show Orson did about his life. Not as good as Charles Nelson Reilly’s THE LIFE OF RILEY, also on YT. ✌️
When Joanne went to buy that outfit and was asked what color she wanted.......Match Game carpet
RIP, Laverne DiFazzio, AKA Penny Marshall. Here's to Milk and Pepsi. :-).
It'd be nice if all the RIPs could be under the same thread.
Maybe Richard was referring to the grown up versions of Pebbles and Bam Bam, from that version of the cartoon.
Or he wasn't, and he deliberately made a weird pedophilic comment.
R.I.P., Orson Bean a.k.a. Bilbo Baggins from both The Hobbit and Return of the King!!!
The VERY sad 😥 thing is that everyone on the pannel(including the host and the announcer)has passed on(including PENNY MARSHALL)may they all rest in peace.
Can't believe Brett is only fifty one or two. Looks 70 at least!
Thank you! I always get granny vibes when I see her.
Age is only a number
Phil is wearing McLean's jacket!
Oh yea.
There's an Italia restaurant that wants its table cloth back.
Rest In Peace Penny Marshall
At 11:58 you can see her smoke. I had no idea she did.
Her father was Gary Marshall who did quite a few games shows. Penny and Gary also had a production company that produced TV shows, specials and Penny directed movies.
This was before Penny Marshall became Laverne by at least one year.
Yup, that wasn't until 1976. She had been in a recurring role on The Odd Couple though, and would have one on The Mary Tyler Moore Show later that year.
Her first appearance as Laverne was on _Happy Days_ in November 1975.
Poor Fannie. They picked on her relentlessly not knowing she was dyslexic
And I've seen lots of misspelled words by all of the contestants over the last 303 episodes.
Now we know how they feel
RIP Penny Marshall
_Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers_ - Now there's an all but forgotten series. All that I can remember (I was 11 then) is a guy hauling around a double bass and another guy with a dreadful, fake foreign accent. None of the writeups mention a character with such an affectation, though; so - we were supposed to believe that the accent was real?! It's a bit of a wonder that the series lasted as many months as it did (3½).
The series actually got good reviews and did well in the ratings. It's kind of a mystery as to why it got cancelled. That turned out to be kind of a lucky break for Penny Marshall because her appearance on "Happy Days" the next year with Cindy Williams as Laverne & Shirley would launch her to super stardom. "Paul Sand ..." was replaced in January 1975 with what would be a huge hit for CBS ... "The Jeffersons".
"The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" Ames Brothers 1954
XMLarry And, she's only nine days old!
Weird how people are so upset that all of these panelists are dead..They were already middle-aged 900 years ago.
Ok, I will throw this out there, can anyone find the Mike Douglas Show that Gene was talking about?? ;0)
It was a popular 1960s-1970s talk show. I don't know if there are any entire episodes available, but you can see clips from the show here on UA-cam.
@@dmnemaine I never saw this one.
Thank goodness Betty White is back!
Richard is in a good mood in this show. He must have enjoyed Penny being there.
Penny looked very nervous
Probably because he kept standing so close to her. Also a lot of people including her former co-star the late Jack Klugman described her as very shy
Penny was a beauty.
Thanks for the laugh"s
@@earlegavin5931 One of the first things that Penny Marshall did was a "Head & Shoulders" commercial where she was a girl with dull, untamed hair and Farrah Fawcett was a girl with lush, vibrant hair. While doing lighting cues, their stand ins were holding signs. The sign that Penny's stand-in was holding said, "Homely Girl" and Farrah's stand-in was holding a sign that said "beautiful girl". Farrah noticed it, and made them change "homely girl" to "plain girl" so that Penny's feelings wouldn't be hurt.
@@LittleAlice7794that's where he always stood.
I love Penny's comment I'm so excited tassels. I miss her so much
Wow 1974....my mom was only 17 😯
me too, lol
That was a creepy comment that Richard said about Pebbles and Bam-Bam.
der22672 very. Lolz.
I wonder how that got passed the censors
But not half as creepy as what Gene said to Penny when he kissed her hand. The look on her face says it all...!
Yes I totally agree, which is especially sad because I don't like him anymore but I still love the show
There was a Pebbles and Bamm Bamm Show about them as teenagers that had been on TV for a couple years by this time. I'd guess that that's what he was referring to.
it would be awesome if there were links to all the tv shows referenced in these episodes, such as whatever that is gene is talking about being in with Dawson & Somers.
"The Mike Douglas Show" was a popular 1960s-70s talk show. It was broadcast from Philadelphia. Mike Douglas himself started his show business career as a big band singer. He was the singing voice for the Prince in the 1950 Disney animated film "Cinderella".
Unfortunately many of those old shows didn't survive. Network executives never envisioned a markets for reruns left alone the internet.
RIP Orson Bean 2/7/2020
It'd be nice if all the RIPs could be under the same thread.
I'm a lefty and I've never heard of a left handed pen....anyone else?
Just a joke.
A simple google search indicates they exist… Did they exist in 1974, I don’t know.
Laverne in This Show!
Richard looks like he has a cold.
In a little over a decade later, a good answer would have been "Shady Pines". I thought of "Shady Rest".
Hahaha!
Phil, the used car salesman.
I wonder if Phil knew pogo the clown 🤡
i wonder if head of the house would match head of the household, cuz those mean the same thing, but then why wouldn't it match head of the family even though that's the same thing
I thought it should have been a match. They are the same thing. They emphasize that it has to be an exact match when it is the contestant-celebrity match, but not with the audience match.
Could all the RIP be under one thread? It's depressing enough without seeing 30 comments about people passing.
It really is sad that they have all passed away:(
Brett is so cute
17:32- Laverne comes through in the end!!!
Don’t they know what near-sighted means??? It means you can see near but not far, so why would a cowboy jump on 2T Tessie when he could see what he was jumping on.
Shady PINES. something betty would be associated with in about 11 years
Penny Marshall wasn't the game show type .
Penny was so pretty
Yes she was
She never was ever that LOL
I agree
Wonder if Brett gave Penny any pointers (since both had been on The Odd Couple)?
Gene, you hadn't watched "The Flinstones" up to that point?
Pointers for this game? I don’t think anyone would need help!
So, I hate these RIP messages in the title. No need to remind us most of them are dead - it takes away from the enjoyment of the program.
Otherwise, thanks for posting these Match Game videos.
It'd be nice if all the RIPs could be under the same thread.
ROFL! Another fine episode! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Charles! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Betty! ;0) Love the entrances, silliness, voices, acting and the fun Gene.. ;0) Person in shot.. ;0) camera in shot.. ;0) Another show I can't seem to find on here the Mike Douglas show that Gene is talking about.. ;0) Many are called but few are frozen.. ;0) Left handed pen??? ;0) rope.. mounted.. ridden.. coat sleeves.. hat.. pants.. You know my husband Allen is a chicken.. no.. neck.. bricks.. I glad we got this bunch, they really going to keep us on our toes.. ;0) ice.. pebbles.. oookkk Richard.. trap.. meat grinder.. with Betty here this week Charles?! socket.. Lone shark if you used the Fannie Flagg spelling. Charles can spell anything but words.. ;0)
Dontcha think ice IS the definitive answer for scotch on the rocks?
It kind of makes convoluted sense that "Dumb Dora" would accidentally stumble on the correct thing to put in the glass when she couldn't find the dumb thing she wanted to put in it.
@@dmnemaineWhat dumb thing could've been put in a scotch and rocks? I can't think of anything that would work?
@@ts.elliot5870 She might have put diamonds in the glass. Diamonds are known as "rocks".
Brett is SO nosy!
How do feel about older men?
R.I.P. Penny Marshall
It'd be nice if all the RIPs could be under the same thread.
Penny Marshall has passed away two days ago. 😢
😢
Does anyone know where I can find the episodes of $20,000 Pyramid that Penny was on? I haven't seen them uploaded on here
Penny Marshall was far cuter than Laverne, IMHO.
Agreed. Too bad she didn't think so.
I’m surprised nobody noticed, but the contestant at the beginning of the looked a lot like Cindy Williams. This was a couple of years before Laverne and Shirley.
What ever happened to Joann? I thought she was a great contestant!
How the sad the only one that is still alive is Betty White
Rest In Peace penny
It'd be nice if all the RIPs could get on the same thread.
Head of State
She was rode
Where did Gene disappear to at the end credits?
Once he said goodbye and the credits & music were rolling, he probably went backstage or to his dressing room.
I want to force SJW ‘to watch a weeks worth of Match Game, heads would explode:)
I tried to watch mg marathon as much as I could. I just got fed up seeing Brett Sommers, she irritated me too no end, I couldn’t stand and hearing voice and always butting in she reminds of a girl I new in elementary school. The teacher had enough and stuffed a wad of paper to shut her up. Lousy voice Brett had👎
I hear ya. But the dynamic between her and Charles is a huge part of the show.
Omg....that kiss between Betty and Gene was yucky. Both married to other people.
UM, that's what they did. Obviously Helen and Allen didn't mind!
It was just a kiss between friends, people do that. Nothing more than friendship.
I always knew that Richard was disgusting, but THAT takes the cake GROOOOSE!!
I never liked him to begin with, butt no WONDER some of you said you didn't like him after THAT comment!
(seriously though; that comment should never have been allowed. That was just plain disgusting)
Try to let it go.
Brett Somers is in her late 70s here.
not even close lol, early 50s. she was born in 1924 and died at age 83 in 2007
Brett was born July 11,1924. So she would have been 49 or 50 depending on when this show was taped.
Lol
YIKES Richard quipped that he had "sexual fantasies about Pebbles and Bam Bam"...that was gross!🧐☹️
I think Gene Rayburn didn't completely explain the questions especially when he was using the Italian accent or the old people voices. That is why especially most women contestants didn't do so good or they didn't understand the questions. Some of the questions for super match were super easy for some and the questions were super difficult.
It was't a just game. It was favoring few people and some question were set before I think. Gene Rayburn didn't do too good for the Matchgames.
Luck of the draw, whether they had the money for the Super Match from Bill Daily said in a interview I saw. I not sure what you mean explain the question, Gene could only do so much explaining to a point where he didn't direct the person to a certain answer.. All they had to do was asked, and some did, Gene to read the question again without the accents. From what I understand all the contestants were brought in to make sure they knew how to and could play the game. Now I do realize, like myself, suddenly being in front of 300 plus people, in the bright lights and in front of cameras the first time can throw a person. Like many have said, they did better at home where the attention wasn't on them and I am certain I would be one of them. Yes, some were easier questions but it was the luck of the draw what question you got as Gene would say they let the contestants pick the question as some find others harder than others so they leave it up to the contestants.. And yes there are times when Gene rush the question to get it in before the end of the show or commercial break... Like Gene said to Pat he was helping all he could without giving or leading the contestant to an answer and taking the chance of losing the job.. I thinking Gene wanted the contestants to win as much as Richard did but could only do so much as the MC and stay neutral or impartial..
Gene did not favor any of the contestants, nice try with your comment though
Gene , stop kissing everyone. It's disgusting.
grayadam - just cause other people's social interactions make you uneasy doesn't mean they should stop.
Especially that gratuitous long kiss to Betty in the beginning.
I love it when he and Betty's kisses. I don't know WHY people have a problem with that. Most of the time his kisses ARE disgusting, but that's what he does and Helen and Allen knew that. The never minded!
Believe me, if Helen minded, you wouldn't have seen another kiss from Gene (for ANYONE)
@@kristabrewer6736 I wonder if Helen minded his cold sore. Wonder if he passed it to her.
So Gene was missing the female celebrities on here, I have seen no problem that. Also Gene does not kiss the female contestants all that much
