Why this is even a thing blows my mind.
For me it has always been about the what and the WHY.

In my experience, the story of Galileo is the most often cited story of the historical rift between science and not just Christianity, but religion in general; but in particular between science and the Catholic Church. This rift of course becomes more superficial the deeper one researches the relationship between early scientists and and their religious affiliations.

What's interesting is that on a surface reading the Galileo conflict looks like it was a debate between science and religion (or science and Christianity). But, for the past handful of decades (probably 50-60 years) historians of science have largely rejected this view that the Galileo controversy was between science and religion. If you want to look into this in much more detail, read books such as these:
"Setting Aside All Authority" by Christopher M. Graney
"Galileo Goes to Jail and Other Myths" by Ronald L. Numbers
"Retrying Galileo, 1633-1992" by Maurice A. Finocchiaro

The Old Testament teaches the view that was current at the time and place of its writing: that the earth is a disk, with stars on a firmament above it, and beyond the stars is the cosmic sea. Irenaeus said there are 4 Gospels because there are 4 corners of the earth and Augustine denied the existence of Antipodes.

Science and God go hand in hand. It is what God asks of us and a way for us to glorify Him.

It happens often because some scientists misrepresent the truth and claim to represent the entire scientific community. For instance, they would claim that science suggests that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old when the truth is that only some scientists subscribe to this view and many do not.

Here's the big catch. Even if science and religion, on paper, should not conflict with each other, and even if, say up until the last century or two, scientists were okay with religion and religious people were okay with science, that does not change the fact that for the last few decades at least, there have been a disturbingly large amount of people that deny some basic tenants of biology, being the common understanding that populations of organisms change over time in predictable ways, all of which are religious by a rounding error. Therefore, there is a huge conflict between religion and science, and honestly saying otherwise would be spouting fiction. Even if religion could coexist with the concept of evolution as understood scientifically, which honestly, I believe it can, there is a large amount of religious people that would disagree, calling evolution the devils attempt to brainwash the masses, or something to that effect, including pretty much everyone at my church group, all of the teachers and staff of the school I went to, and all four of my grandparents. I mean, seriously, how could someone hold the opinion that there isn't a problem when I could name organizations like discovery institute, pretty famous, _(pretty clearly religious although they won't usually say as much)_ and entirely dedicated to making up or conflating data to conflict with the modern understanding of biology.

Science was never against religion. It's not that in the 20th century science progressed drastically and people realized that God doesn't exist, it's just that they began to hate God and turned to science for comfort.

    • @somerandom3247
      @somerandom3247 2 місяці тому

No, it's because as science has progressed, more and more of the stories religions like Christianity claim are true, have been shown to be false. And no matter where we look, there is no evidence that justifies believing that any gods exist.
Your god being evil is a completely separate issue to why people don't believe it exists.

@@somerandom3247 what stories in the Bible have been demonstrated to be false?

The creation account in Genesis is figurative and much of Genesis is figurative actually. There is good evidence for the flood. Science does confirm that we have common ancestors, so i don't see how this contradicts the Bible.

Id like to see this good evidence you have for the flood.
You would also have to explain where all the water came from ,where it went, how the animals got to and from the boat, how they all fit on the boat, how such a small crew kept all those animals alive for so long, how everything got around the incest problem, and why there is no evidence of the genetic bottleneck in any animals DNA.
The science that shows us we have common ancestors is what show us everything didn't all come into existence as they were. it absolutely contradicts the bible.
