  • 14 years ago, Crispin Moorey quit his city job to start a beautiful permaculture farm and homestead in the Japanese countryside together with his wife Kazumi. Dissatisfied with their life in the city, they craved a deeper connection to nature. Their unique off-grid permaculture farm and homestead includes many self-built structures such as a yurt, a shed and a barn as well as a productive mandala garden. Crispin's permaculture farm is a great example of regenerative agriculture and shows that it is possible to carve out a living from taking good care of Mother Earth. Crispin and his wife add value to the crops they grow by turning them into delicious shelf-stable products first, processing and packaging everything in-house before selling them directly to their customers across Japan.

Jesus Christ wants a personal relationship with you through the Holy Spirit, not religion and blind faith. You see, we all have sinned, and have broken God’s law (The Ten Commandments). Wrong doing deserves justice and must be punished (just like how a criminal has to pay for the crime they have committed) but God saved us from the eternal punishment of our sins by sending His Son Jesus Christ, fullness of God in flesh, a perfect, sinless sacrifice to pay the penalty for our sins by shedding His Blood, dying on the cross and resurrecting, so that we may have everlasting life. It is all finished and now for you to accept the free gift of grace, you must repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus Christ and Bible says that His Blood will cover all of your sins, you will be forgiven, saved from eternal punishment, and be given everlasting life. By faith you will receive the Holy Spirit, become born again, know Jesus personally and He will transform your heart and clean you from the inside out. It's been two years since I moved to a farm. I went back to the big smoke a couple of weekends ago and I couldn't sleep. The noises, the lack of consideration, the distractions and focus on ego or status. I don't think I finished many sentences before being interrupted by another conversation or new question. There was the familiar sense of people pursuing more and more and being fulfilled less and less. Loved the video, if you can't afford land, start with a garden. When the guy in the film said Enough, he made me think of it. It’s a diary of sorts, with lots of details. And spreadsheet type records of his harvest and income for his family. And what worked. It’s fairly short and well written. Fascinating book.

She said I want to go home we might not have cars or Airconditioning or bathrooms but we have a better simple life and she went back. Why not move somewhere smaller, maybe get some land, or at least a garden and start living that slow life? As a fellow Englishman, I fully agree with his opinion of both city life and living in the countryside. I really couldn’t take the city anymore - the noise and air pollution, the crowds, etc were driving me insane. Here, I can go outside most nights and have a beautiful view of the stars. I just sit there watching the night sky with the sound of the running water and the birds and relax. The absence of noise from vehicles alone was fantastic. No noisy scooters delivering newspapers at 4am, no motorbikes, and no ambulances.
Our farm sits at 850 metres above sea level in a space cut out of the cypress and chestnut forest. There is a large stream with fish running through the property, which was a key selling point. Nearby bamboo groves also provide lots of takenoko in late April through May, there is plenty of foraging available and I will be enjoying chestnuts later in the year.
We have bears and monkeys here as well, but the boar, so far, are more troublesome. They can destroy a crop overnight I didn’t want to build fences, but it has to happen. Luckily, the land is terraced with large stone walls that will not require as many fences. I too will be regenerating this land. I’ve bought many species of fruit trees, blackberry, blueberry and grapes and we also got some bee hives that we hope to get filled. I have almost finished building a chicken coop and that, we hope, will supply us our eggs. I have the compost piles going and there is no lack of material on hand to do that.
It’s an old farmhouse, and needs some work. The electricity, for example, is only 15 amps; which seems insufficient but has been ok so far. On a positive note, our electric bill was only ¥2,500 in April and water is free. To get upgraded to 30 amps requires paying for another line to be run and I imagine that won’t be cheap.

It doesn't have to cost a fortune. I know land access is a problem in the west, fortunately Japan is different and we were able to find our place going for a pittance. We've expanded our farm to 3 times it's original size without spending a penny on land since the original purchase. I think if we were trying to do this in the west, we'd have to look into rented land, cooperatives or shared ownership.

@@cripmoorey Is it difficult for Westerners to buy land and build on it like this?
      Visas and other red tape?
I see from this channels other videos that there are a few westerners living this way in Japan.I suspect you/they have a Japanese partner so it's easier.

I love the garden design with the four paths leading outward from the center. It reminds me of the Mercator map of the Arctic, which shows lands in the shape of a four leaf clover around the pole. It is the true map of how our northern regions look today, despite what scientists say about an ice sheet.

What really made me smile watching this video was at 10:53 when the camera pans out to reveal the black Nissan X-Trail Aventura parked in the driveway. Why? Because having lived and worked in Nagoya for eight years but now sadly back in the UK rat race, this is the car that I bought off an elderly gentleman in January 2023, here in London. It's a replica of this car - mine is the T-30 2007 model and still goes like a dream. Japan for Nature - Japan for Cars.

I wish i could be satisfied living like this, but ive grown up in a way that i need my fancy headphones and wifi and video games. I think there is still a lot to be learned from a lifestyle like this though. even for us that live in a modern world, what might be enough for us would be a little more than an off the grid homestead, but living for only what makes you happy and wanting the things you only truly want is a good mantra for all of us.

I'm in the exact same spot as "Mr England", appart from the fact that i built in Franceinstead of Japan. I lived in a tent for 2 years while i was planting fruit trees (a little less then 100) and building a 20m2 shed to live till the house is built.
Difference is that i use nearly 0 petrol (10l a year) but i built my solar panel system and all my tools works on it (jointer/planer, table saw, saws, drills, mower .... etc)
And like Mr English ... i'm living connected to the rythm of nature.

I'm into agriculture, so I know what life is living in nature. The schools should include agriculture and environmental studies in their curriculum, so that they understand the world better. We can't eat money and we can't breathe technology, we survive on food and oxygen. Respect nature or perish. 🙏
