Since the bike is new and assuming if you had not crashed the bike on the drive side, which might cause the derailleur hanger to bend, it's very likely the new cable has stretched, causing the rear derailleur indexing to be off. On a bike with mechanical shifter like yours, there's typically a barrel adjuster (located either at the shifter or the rear derailleur) that allows you to make adjustment to index the rear derailleur. Turning the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise will reduce the slack since your new cable has stretched. Do quarter of a turn, check, and repeat if necessary.

I'm a bit late to the party but I wanted to say the same. If you're still unsure about how the derailleur works and can be fixed, there's a really good video by "Berm Peak Express" about it. It's called "How to tune your derailleur with basic tools (for beginners)". If I recall correctly, he also states that the cable might stretch during the first couple of kilometers.

Great video. My favorite time of the year to ride and camp. I just bought a Priority 600adx mountain bike that is a pinion bike. No chain or derailer to deal with and all belt driven. I never have to worry about mud or grime mucking up my shifting since all my gears are in a sealed gearbox. Expensive bike but I think it will be worth it. I just got sick of problems all the time so it was time to invest in something designed for bikepacking. I hope you get things sorted out with your new bike. One word of advice is to be sure never to lay your bike over on the derailer side. Sometimes things can get a bit out of alignment and even a slight bend of the derailer can cause major issues. Again, this is why I went hassle free myself. Never need to oil or grease anything for at least 6000 miles or so and then its just changing the gear box oil. The Gates belt is supposed to last 3 times longer than a chain but I carry a spare just in case. The best part is that it's so quiet and no more clanking gear shifts which makes a ride like yours even more special when you can hear things much better. Glad you made it ok and keep riding!

Love your videos. Your channel has been an inspiration, as we don't have a lot of local cycling vloggers in Alberta, you have shown us a great deal of what is accessible right in our backyard.
I have done 100 km plus bike rides both on my trail and road bikes all over Canada. Bike cables flex in the first few 100 kms and need to be adjusted. I recommend watching channels like GCN GMBN and they are a wealth of resource on how to do basic bike repairs etc. I recommend a good bike specific multitool for your next adventure.
I recommend switching to a 1x setup on your bike as well, it requires less maintenance and is the way to go for most mountain and gravel bikes.
    Happy Riding!

Thanks for another great video. You always find the best places and capture them well.
You may be asking, "How can a new bike fail to shift properly?" It might be because the cable and housing are not working correctly. The ends of the housing might not be properly seated in the stops or barrel adjuster, thereby causing friction on the cable. Often the end of the housing is not filed straight when it is cut and the end that goes into the derailleur or shifter is not clean and square, causing friction on the inner cable. The barrel adjuster at the shifter may need adjustment. The compressionless housing may not be properly seated or compressed (tug on the bare inner cable to seat it). The housing may be slightly kinked as it enters the barrel adjuster on the derailleur. It should enter straight into the adjuster for at least 1-2cm near the adjuster. Shape the cable housing if it is not. The presence of the bags near the cables in front of the bar may be distorting the cable housing so that it cannot allow the inner cable to slide properly. All of these things you'll be able to sort out at home with just a few tools.

    • @jennalexisko
      @jennalexisko  3 місяці тому +1

Thankyou for this- very in depth and insightful! I’m definitely going to screenshot your comment and take a look at my bike and try and identify all the parts you mentioned here! I appreciate you!

    • @bengt_axle
      @bengt_axle 3 місяці тому

@@jennalexisko Looking at the derailleur (7:10) the cable is entering at a slight angle, but it is not so bad. If you can cut the zip ties on the chain stay pull out a bit more housing and coil the housing in your hand at the curve, it will probably allow the housing to enter completely straight into the derailleur stop. At this point, you can also check that the housing is cut squarely by shifting into the largest cog, and then clicking the shifter many times to release the inner cable (as if you were changing into a harder gear), but without pedaling. This will create slack in the inner cable so that you can pull the outer housing away and check the end of it for squareness. There are all kinds of tutorials on-line on how to adjust the limit screws, but I don't think that is the problem here. Another possibility is that the derailleur cage got bent and the upper and lower jockey wheels are not in the same plane. More common is a bent derailleur hanger, which should ideally be straightened with a special tool, or by removing the derailleur and using an adjustable wrench to bend it. A bent hanger is one of the first things you should check for.

  • @AndreyKitsa

I ride bikes for 25 years and still do not know how to fix derailleur. What I learnt is that you put your bike a side that doesn't have it. As most of the time you damage it just by putting it down and banding derailleur.

Derailleurs typically do this on new bikes, it’s to do with brand new cables wearing in and stretching. The easiest way to fix it is, find out which way the gears are skipping, normally the cable stretches so you will turn the derailleurs adjustment anti-clockwise just slightly, remember to do half a turn and test by riding and changing gears. The derailleur will move in which ever way you turn the adjuster, so turn it to the left for going to bigger sprockets and to the right for smaller sprockets. You’ll be mastering the derailleur before you know it. Best of luck out there.

As Jorg schlagheck says: it is not the destination but rather the adventure that matters. Jorg has cycled in Europe, Central America, South America and across Canada but his home is Edmonton.
My thoughts are that your cable slipped or stretched or both!
My suggestion is to learn how to tune your rear cassette cable alignment (Derailleur). there are often 2 adjustment screws. one at each end of the cable run. One where the cable accesses the Derailleur and one at the shifter.
Shift gears into the middle gear(s) best on a 5, 7, 9, 11 cog cassette, the evens are the same but you may need to test the adjustment on both center cogs so if you have a ten cog cassette they are 5 and. Once 5 or 6 in line with the chain in the same marked gear on the Derailleur, that is it!
Watch some videos and perfect fixing gears, fix your parents gears, your friends gears soon you will be the gear wizard!
Take care and learn how to adjust and maintain every part of your ride!
    Take care,

Canada has no shortage of water and beautiful natural scenery. With so much wilderness, no wonder mountain biking is so popular. With all those large pebbles, a gravel bike probably won't cut it and suspensions become a necessity, and a full suspension is called for for longer distances, and definitely for faster rides. • @stuartpilling6190

You probably bent the derailleur hanger somehow. You can in future try the barrel adjustment on the cable at the derailleur and the gear shifter.
Always lay the bike with the derailleur upwards so you don't accidentally put the bikes weight on the derailleur.
The hanger is designed to bend when too much stress is put on it to stop worse damage to the derailleur.

Well I like the bike and the trip, but cant figure out what was the problem about the gears. I hope you solved it in the bike shop later. I ride bike for about 5-6 years and I love to ride alone and to enjoy nature just like that. Nature in your video is absolutly stunning. One big like and subscribe from me. Kind regards from other side of the World, Mostar, Bosnia and Hercegovina.

The shop where you bought a bike. They probably didnt put much effort into adjusting derraileur. On the derraileur, there are two screws..one is for high gears and one is for low gears. When you align derraileur with cassette. Than you go onto fine tune it with barrel on the shifter on your handlebars. But it seems that you dont have multi tool, so only option is barrel adjustment that you could have done in this situation.

This is a great tip Thankyou so much! I did actually have my multi tool with me- just didn’t know what to do with it 😂I did end up getting my cables adjusted at the shop after I got home but I’m definitely saving your advice for next time because they took it to the back and I didn’t get to see the process lol

@@jennalexisko You said that the bike shop did a tune up on the bike when you purchased it. I hate to say, it doesn't seem like they were very thorough. Mihael was correct about the limit screws. However, the limit screws are NOT what was causing your bike to have poor shifts or to jump gears without pressing the gear shift levers. The limit screws "limit" how far your derailleur goes in either direction. If not set properly, you can have any of these issues:
      1) Your chain can jump off of the largest cog into your frame
      2) (What happened to you it looks like) Your chain can jump off the smallest cog
      3) The derailleur can skip entire cogs when shifting,
So it seems like your limits were improperly set. BUT the problem with your shifting was caused by improper cable tension. This can be adjusted with the barrel adjuster, either found on your handlebars where the shift levers are, or on the derailleur itself. If your bike is having trouble shifting into higher gears (smaller cogs), you want to turn the barrel adjuster clockwise in one click increments until it shifts smoothly. If your bike is not shifting properly into lower larger cogs, turn the barrel adjuster counter clockwise.
I hope this helps you Jenna. I recently discovered your content and I enjoy experiencing the adventures through your camera's eye. I hope to one day go on some badass bikepacking trips as well.

@@BykerSoosh Nah, pretty standard with a new bike and cable stretching/wearing in. Maybe a faus paux by the bike shop to not give the new owner a heads up that this will occur after first major ride/useage.

way to go for that positive outlook, if you get a new bike in the near future, get an mtb with a pinion drive or internal hub and forget about bike drivetrain issues. much less headache and more focus into other stuff. but then again these happenings make the experience more interesting.

I JUST figured out how to adjust my derailleurs. I was just thinking I will never go get it fixed at a shop anymore. Then I realized the "What if" moment happens in the wilderness? I don't know if I need my bike repair stand. One day I will figure it out.
BTW, your issue seems like the derailleur cable tension came loose during the rocky part of the ride.

  • @tongpocalypse

Bummer about the chain skip. Many things can cause it. Usually it's just a quarter turn of the barrel adjuster to at least reduce the noise. The most recent time this happened to me, i was messing with the barrel adjuster to no avail and it was due to the B screw stripping out. I have another bike that skips but only on one gear so that's due to a worn cog (not likely to be your root cause since your bike is new).

It is either the derailleur is bent or the shift cable tension is wrong. I would adjust the cable tension using the barrel adjuster. Hope you have a better luck next time!

Looks like cable strech which can be common on a new bike. This is a simple fix and you can totally teach yourself by using your barrel adjuster most commonly on or near the shifter or sometimes on the derailer. By now you e had this adjusted but hopefully you learned how to do it for next time. Its Empowering to be able to fix, adjust, repair your own whip.

Horse “Poopies”= Road apples (yes the technical term) and depending on the horse’s diet Dogs love’em! 🐶 sounds like your rear derailleur is out of alignment/adjustment and can happen when you put your bike on a rack and hitting it or a variety of other things. And not all bike shops have decent mechanics, just an observation.

Because its a new bike, cable will stretch after the first few rides, and your derailleur will need to be slightly readjusted so it won't click.
