Dr. Argenziano did my mitral repair 7 years ago and although I have been bad about exercising like I did prior to needing surgery I am doing fantastic. I have nothing but high praise for Dr. Argenziano and his team!
I'm presently a candidate for surgery do to mvp. Of course I'm in favor of the least invasive procedure. This presentation enlightened me in regards to repair vs replacement.
Repair is excellent normal life span. Animal replacement ten years til need new one. Mechanical mitral valve can last lifetime but need blood thinners. They can fail but new techniques have a valve part inserted to existing mechanical valve thru the artery.

Surgeon I talked to today said he prefers sternum entry because it's faster operation less time on heart lung machine.
My mother just died from that surgery. According to the surgeon something went horribly wrong, they were doing the repair.
I am so sorry to hear that you must be devastated.
What's the long term prognosis
For patients who undergoes mitral valve replacement? I can't seem to find any long term survivor stories.

Mitral clip is new procedure and only used in older more vulnerable patients right now.
