The amusement and fun of adulthood comes in mysterious ways. I got a lemon squeezer last week for $5 that had a little cup that collects the juice and I was so excited to try it, ah the simple things that make us forget about our daily struggles 🥰 also approve of P!ATD song choice 👌

The only one of these I've read is Blackened Teeth and I absolutely felt the same way about the characters. Just rooting for the ghost the whole time. (And yes, I wrote like six versions of that kind of story by the time I hit middle school.)

i am SO fascinated by this mysterious novella with no ratings. there are used copies (a copy??) on amazon and then oxfam is selling a used signed first edition for only £8.99 but there is so little otherwise.

I have a couple of recommendations for horror novellas: The Patient by Jasper DeWitt and The Underdwelling by Tim Curran. I liked both of these for different reasons.
(Also liked Ursula Vernon/T Kingfisher's What Moves The Dead recently which is a retelling of Poe's Fall of the House of Usher, but idk if I'd call it horror tbh)

Have you ever seen the movie “The Ritual”, Gavin? It’s such a good horror film but the book was so different! I’d so recommend giving it a try though - worth a read just for how crazy it gets in the second half!
Great video as usual, I’m more of a lurker but thought I’d pop in to say how much I love your content - your hard work and passion for this really shows. Thanks for sharing!

I am not mad to be in the Gavin Horror Era. I actually really enjoyed The Pale House Devil. Even though lovecraftian and cosmic horror does not tend to work for me🙈 But most of my favorite horror novellas are the ones that are quite messed up. 👀
I never read Nothing But Blackened Teeth also because of all the bad reviews....I was like...pass. I am now glad I skipped it.

Your library has such cool displays! Love the 'it upset me so much' when you take the book from it. I actually really liked the pale house devil 😅 I liked the characters dynamic and the world building for such a short novella. I would call it horror -- only because I recommended it to a friend and she couldn't finish it because she was too scared. I think we are just used to more darker and disturbing things 🙈 it didn't scare me either but did feel horror-y in its tropes. And was so interesting to hear your thoughts on the ballad of black tom as I have been meaning to read it for ages but actually didn't know it was a novella and not a novel D:

I really liked Crossroads, it was heartbreaking.
I was really intrigued by the premise of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, but I felt like it was a bit overwritten and needed to be fleshed out into a longer novel. Definitely a missed opportunity there. I have the original cover, and it is awesome.
I definitely have had The Ballad of Black Tom on my TBR for a while.
My husband read the Kadrey a few weeks ago, and I will let him take that bullet for me ;-)

Might be worth checking out Crossroads for myself then.
I'm not a fan of Lovecraft (either his works or him as a person - for the love of god do not look up the name of his cat), but The Cats of Ulthar might be worth reading if you have a few minutes free. It's extremely short, and it appeals to my love for cats and the idea that they're vengeful beings that mustn't be harmed. Lovecraft was a cat-lover, so that's one redeeming quality about him, I guess.

I bought Nothing but Blackened Teeth specifically to read on Halloween night in 2021 and I was so very disappointed. It was a one star for me as well, and, while I don't want to see you read terrible books, I was quite excited for your thoughts (sometimes its fun when we can all hate the same thing).
I admit I was fooled by the gorgeous cover (mine's different from yours, must be a US version?) and I honestly found the ghost to be the most likeable character. I was excited for the cast to get brutally picked off one by one, but then, well, you've seen how that went. I thought the characters made more sense as getting together for a funeral of a mutual friend than a wedding. Like you said, there was no way to believe that this group were actually "friends."
I hope you continue to find books that make you happy!

Lovecraft was inspired by House on the Borderlands.
Some of Lovecraft's stuff is pretty approachable.
Unfortunately, a lot of it has a fun dose of racism, so I wouldn't recommend exploring his work unless you really want to explore the genre.

I nearly had a heart attack when Ash almost fell. I’m still near the beginning of the video, but I just had to comment at that moment of the video. I felt my heart jump out of my chest.
Also Gavin, would you consider reading extreme horror? I don’t want to put any pressure on you, but I was just wondering.
Also, I just finished the Arlong Arch of One Piece. I named one of my water Pokémon “Bellemére”. Why water Pokemon, well…you know…😏
Anyways, I’m going to continue watching the video.
Gavin, I feel like you’d be a fun person to hang out with. I hope that doesn’t sound weird, you just give off very fun and very chill vibes.

The Pale House Devil was a disappointment for me as well! I thought it had a lot of interesting elements, but the execution just wasn't that interesting. Kind of all over the place, stayed on the surface where I wanted it to go deeper. I would enjoy reading more about the two main characters in a series of them doing what they were doing before the story in The Pale House Devil. And possibly after. I haven't read any of the others, but have heard good things about The Ballad of Black Tom and Crossroads. I did read a really interesting horror novella last year which I loved: This Is Where We Live by Kate Hardie. It's a bit literary, and very weird, and it tackles quite a few difficult topics in a very original and (imo) poignant way. Chock-full of feminine rage. Not necessarily a recommendation, because I honestly can't really gauge if you'd like it, but who knows!

I would highly recommend reading H.P Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Machen, M.R James & Algernon Blackwood for a solid background for the horror genre. They were all influential to modern horror and wrote really 'creeping horror' which I love! Lots of short stories to get a taste for their style👻.
