  • Dame Vera Lynn, one of the most popular British entertainers of the past century, the singer known as the forces' sweetheart during the Second World War, has died at the age of 103.
Dame Vera's songs, including We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover, became enormously popular among the armed forces and in homes across the United Kingdom as she lifted spirits and gave hope to many.
In later years Dame Vera fought hard to win fair treatment for war widows. The Prime Minister said her voice would live on for generations to come.
Dame Vera's popularity didn't fade after the war ended. She found new generations of admirers and no major commemoration of the Second World War was complete without her presence. Just last month she became the oldest artist to achieve a top-40 album in the UK.
Huw Edwards presents News at Ten reporting from Robert Hall and Sarah Campbell.

R.I.P. Dear Vera Lynn. I've always loved "We'll meet again".
But I always get choked up when singing it, because I think about all those servicemen who sang that song only to never see home again.

From America: I always liked this song very much but never heard it out when it came on television so I didn’t know who Vera Lynn was. Then I learned on tonight’s news who she was and that she had died. It showed her singing to the troops and I started tearing up knowing the fate of so many was in such great peril in those dark times. My father was one as a Sargent in the US army. A great story, a beautiful voice and a great lady.

I want to and have clarified in my previous reply that I hold my annoyance and contempt to Westminster and the elite in England. Nothing against English people for that would be ignorant since we are all under their knee. Sadly this idea of England and the UK being interchangeable has been exported so well to the rest of the world that only a couple of times on holiday either to Europe or overseas have people known what Scotland is or that there is four supposed "equal nations" in the UK. I'm sick of my national identity being labelled a regional identity and the same as British/English (see what I did there). Being Scottish means to hold a broad set of values that includes being welcoming to migrants, proud of our country and hardworking.

Wow. I have her signature on a Robert Taylor Battle of Britain print. Seems even more special now.

Dame Vera Lynn was the last living well known person and well known at the time from the Second World War. (Prince Phillip, who fought as a naval officer in the war seeing action at the Battle of Cape Matapan in 1942, only became well known when he married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947). Although there are still a very few War veterans still alive, the youngest would now be in their middle to late 90s since the War ended 77 years ago, in many ways her death marked the moment when the War passed from living memory into history.
However, her songs will never fade from memory and her moving and beautiful songs sang so well by Dame Vera will forever be her legacy,
And her songs will be heard for as long as humanity survives. May she Rest In Peace, maybe up there she is singing her songs to those who fought in the war who predeceased her.
