Thank you for your awesome videos and the time you take to make them great. I absolutely agree with you, Sonos needs to allow user volume control of the center channel. This would totally fix the problem of low dialog, without changing the sound profile for everyone.

I agree 100%. Sonos needs a parametric EQ and the ability to change the sound profile of the center channel independent from the rest.
I also want Sonos to allow the pairing of two more One SL speakers for the fronts, that way we can enhance our Atmos sound

    Dear Peter,
Thank you very much for reviewing the new update 14.12. You really have done a lot of great jobs for reviewing everything about Sonos.
We are looking forward from you for the best setting for Sonos Arc, Sub Gen 3, and Pair of One SL, for the new update 14.12 please!
It is really disappointing from Sonos they do that for decreasing or dropping the sound level while they have to enhance it to be better not for worse so that we have to play with EQ until to get the best sound as the previous update.
    Last your best setting was:
    Trueplay: ON
    Bass: -2
    Treble: +3
    Loudness: ON
    Night Mode: OFF
    Speech: OFF
    Sub: -4
    Surround: 0
    Heights: +4
Looking for your best setting with the new update 14.12.

I thought it was my ears or something with the arc after the update and wanted to lower bass and bump treble.
    Finally watched your video.
    Pre update 14.10 : Bass -2 , Treble +4.
    After update 14.12 : Bass -5 , Treble +5
After the update i had to lower the bass all the way to -5 so dialogue does not sound muddy!!! And bump treble to +6 so surround shines again. What a difference in the sound profile. Such big changes!
I have not decided yet what it should be for my sub which was at -4 pre update.
I can tell for sure that dialogue is very good after lower bass to -5. And for sure much better than before update.
It just worries me that the mids might dissapear having bass that low. Anything higher than -5 dialogue then sounds muddy though.
Dont know of i can compensate mids with the help of the sub.
If my mids are fine with these settings, i seriously believe that this update was a very good one.

Thanks for this video, I hope sonos realise the error they have made and correct this asap.
I’ve contacted the staff through chat, sent a diagnostic report and sent an email.
Im now regretting switching my beam for an arc. From what i understand, sonos are trying to compensate for the lack of voice clarity by dropping the sound on the non central speakers. What they fail to realise is that many users (such as myself) use sonos mainly for music. This new sound signature has removed the dynamic full sound i loved. I also like to have the music loud, thats been hampered too. They need to give the user the opportunity to change the eq for all ranges of sound. Sony and other leading companies have the option on all top end systems, even headphones. What do sonos not give us this option? Are they trying to protect the speakers? Not enough power in the arc? I would also like to know why they have changed the output of the sub. They oblige us to link it to the ark and thus the arc dulls out the sound it used to produce. I would rather it had its old sound signature back and was independent from the arc.
Spending thousands on a sound system for Sonos to give us no choice but to impose sound signatures we don’t want is really bad business. They could even create a menu with different sound signatures to allow us to choose. Just like Devialet, Sony etc, That way satisfy music and movie lovers.
Anyway, thanks for your help. Im looking into the Sony HT-A9. That way i will have full control of the settings and not have to worry about what the next update will do. I’ll give sonos a few weeks to get the sound back to where it was before moving on.

I have the A9. I heard the arc at a showroom. I think the A9 is way better especially for music. Incredibly the phantom centre channel sounds like having a physical speaker. Only gripe I have is the choice of sub. You only have 2 choices. SW3 and SW5 but I think sonos is badder in choice of sub.

    • @cestseb
      @cestseb 2 роки тому

Would you really claim that most users use the sonos arc for music? I think most people would just get a sonos five, or two. Or even multiple ones spread around.
It kind of makes sense to tune a soundbar for movies and TV.
Center ch adjustement would be good to allow for people who want to tune it. But I dont think your claim is correct.

    • @iansives5521
      @iansives5521 2 роки тому

@@cestseb I didn't say 'most', i said 'many' there is a big difference in the two words and their meanings. Despite that, i have a Sonos Sub, if i were to use my SL one speakers only with the sub it would mean no longer having it connected to the Arc. Or...... i would have to continuously disconnect the sub from the SL ones when watching TV then disconnect it from the Arc when listening to music. The Update has really affected the Subs sound signature whether with the Arc or the Sl Ones. So the problem is the same.

Thank you for this great video. It makes much more sense to me now. However, the Trueplay tuning is way off with sub and surrounds.
I complained @ Sonos and just got the feedback by email that they are aware that Trueplay, in some circumstances, is not working correctly and they are working on a patch to fix the issue. When the patch comes out is unclear, but they are working on it, that's all they could tell me.
I'm very curious when you have the time to test the arc with the surrounds and sub and running Trueplay. You might be amazed when you do the measurements. My guess is, that after Trueplay, the curve is going up and down all over the frequency range. Especially the mid-bass in a peak, and the low-bass, way lower. So that's very hard to compensate. I brought down the bass at -2 and sub-level at +9. But I can still tell that the mid-bass is now overpowered, meanwhile the low-bass is where it should. I don't have measure equipment, but this is what my ears are telling me. Might be totally wrong about this after you show us your hard data.
I also did read a lot of reactions on the Sonos community where people advice to use the system with Trueplay off. Seems the Sub is better now with Trueplay off.
Let's hope there will be a patch available soon 🙏

Peter, an excellent video with analysis. I have a few questions about the recommendation that made in your video about decreasing the bass and increasing the treble. When the arc is paired with the sub, do we get the same sound profile after the update? Secondly, I have a Sub, gen 3 paired with Arc and two SL ones and if I have to decrease the bass, should I be decreasing the bass on the Sub or on the arc?
Also, I have an Amaze Dolby Atmos trailer (official) downloaded from Dolby, and earlier to the update, the sound as well as the dynamics was comparable to that of a traditional 5.1.2. Because I have the 5.1.2 set-up and have played the trailer over and over on both and I always appreciated how well Sonos reproduced. However, now with the 14.12 update, I'm totally disappointed with the sound. It's not the volume, the thunder rumbling sound in the trailer is so underwhelming, never expected that Sonos would do this to the community!

Hi Peter, thanks for this measurements on new update. Also I have to say that Sonos not only change the soundsignature but also the soundstage. I have two setups with Arc, Sub and Ones. One of them is connected to PC to use as gaming setup. With the latest update I feel that the Arc uses more the side speakers and create a narrow soundstage, using this firesides for more work now than before with rear sounds that uses to with Ones speakers. So the "feel" is that I am on a triangle shape of soundstage than a circular, as previos version. For gaming last update not work very well...I think that this update has more to do with Arc alone than with full setup...

I actually think 14.12 sounds better. Compensating for the difference in levels, around 5-6 dB, it sounds like they cleaned up the midrange, mid-bass and low end. The 14.10 version sounds a bit boomy on the low end and not as clean. I can't say I notice much difference in the higher frequencies.

I also keep submitting requests for proper home cinema control, adding another more powerful DSP product to control more channels in High Definition. The reason you get less volume with an EQ change upping certain frequencies is clipping. In order to prevent clipping you have to lower the pre gain, which is the gain of the sound before being amplified through the amplifier. That’s why you have to increase the volume (which means increase the amplifier output) to get the same volume levels.

A proper EQ is so desperately needed across all Sonos products. But I don't want a parametric EQ, they are too complex. I think 6-bands fixed would be perfect, that keeps it relatively simple, high and low, bass, mids and treble. 8 or 10 bands fixed would be fine too but then it gets more complex for people who don't understand hertz scales.
