Having only just had a survey conducted on a "new to me" boat I had a great chuckle while watching this episode of your boating life. it perfectly summed up the thoughts and emotions swirling around my head. Also gave great talking points for the moments when people ask "but why?" and "how much did you spend?"

I'm used to Ericsons and I know the systems and the characteristics. Not houseboats. Sail well on all points. Quality build. But there are lots of good boats out there....
I'm debating between getting an Ericson 38 vs an Ericson 28. Are you happy you made this change? Apart from cost of ownership/maintenance, any disadvantage from going with with the 38 over your old 32?
Yes, that's the idea. But it would be easier if I were 25. Only issue is that the sails are bigger, heavier, and the forces on the equipment in heavy wind get large. Technique is the answer, and knowing limitations.

You get this amazing pearl at the end. It doesn't matter the cost or how much time anybody planned. It's about making the damned venture happen in the first place. Everyone can look back and say this or that but I agree with Christian...thats where we've been...who the hell cares...time to shove off!

The Sailomat 800 vane should work fine on this boat, too. It's currently in the garage. My wife says she checks on it there from time to time to see if I'll be home for dinner.....

Yes a diesel produces a lot of carbon it's a low RPM in a Burns diesel oil that's the key it's not like gasoline it doesn't have any octane to it so just like if you put oil on a fire you get that big black puffy smoke people don't do that at home do not put oil on a wood burning fire because it will go up quick and if you're not ready for it you will get hurt anyways, diesel engines do not have any spark plugs they combust the diesel under high compression, and the nature of diesel leaves a lot of carbon behind and the oil catches it that's why five minutes later your oil is already black, doesn't mean that it's bad it's means that it's doing its job you checked the viscosity to see if your oil is good or bad the way you do that is when you first see that nice gold and brown oil that's coming out of put it in between your put a little dab in between your fingers and slide it around little bit see how it feels it's nice and slick, then after certain amount of hours you change it of course, and when you change it put some in between your thumb and forefinger again see how it feels, well if it feels same way just slightly different you done a good job that's the way you should do it you don't wait until the oil is worn out, you wait until it has some life left in it so it's still doing its job properly, when you waited too long as when you put it in between your finger and thumb it it doesn't feel like it used to it sorted drags that means it's a viscosity of broke down and you waited too long and you have done harm your engine just a little bit or a whole lot, that's what you don't want to do, ask trustee mechanic how many hours you should wait and then change it on time every time, okay so you travel in your car and you change it every 3000 miles, and then you think most of that was Highway time I was doing 60 miles an hour well it takes 60 minutes in an hour 60 miles an hour is 60 miles so is there you go 60 / 3,000 that's how many hours you should change it in the car well there's your formula figure out how many nautical miles you went do that three thousand miles get the drift, that's how you get your hours and that's how you can go by your hour meter and change your oil that's only if you're using fossil oil if he used some thetic oil it goes a lot farther

If you buy a used sailboat is it a must or law to have it inspected?
At least where i'm from, by law vessels need to be inspected every year regarding safety and functionality, if approved they're seaworthy
