This whole video strikes me as the kind of situation where maybe Mike had a girl that he was really really into, but she didn't like him back or broke his heart, and she really loved The Doors.
@@Melancholy216 i gess you are probably joking, but i think that reasoning is flawed. It's like saying that you can't say a videogame is boring if you have never made one. What you need to correctly criticize something is to have knowledge of musical theory and composition, not to make good music.
I'm not a keyboard fan whatsoever, BUT Manzarek was the talent in this band. Carried the bass line and filled the songs with melodies and solo's, he's the man.
Robbie Krieger was only 19 when The Doors formed, and 20 when they recorded their debut album...is he the greatest guitar player ever? No, but he was experimental, and trying to not regurgitate the same thing everybody else was doing at the time
Funny hoe everyone focuses on krieger's guitar playing but never talks about his song writing. h wrote a large part of thier hits including light my fire.
See, that's what I thought... until I heard the post-Morrison albums. Sometimes music is not just about the songwriter (and with The Doors, they all did it), but also about the chemistry between them. Without Morrison, they didn't just lose a lyricist/vocalist, but they lost a major part of what was holding them together. I'm not saying the two post-Morrison albums were bad, they were really good, but they didn't have that feeling like the music is bewitching you.
@P Mosh It pretty much just shows that you didn't watch the video, because he talks about Morrison's death... Also "left" can be used when someone dies. E.g., "he left us."
Hes just a weird hater i dont get how you can hate the doors? Like really? They made great music that is timeless and touching. Theres nothing to hate about the doors unless you just hate jim morrison for being a chick magnet with his antics and philosophy that attracts all the chicks.
@@shepherdoffire9263 thank you .also, Jim sang all kinds of ways and kicked ass at the rock vocal style . Raw sloppy and gritty but on time and in tune always! His own brand!. especially live and EVEN at the end of his career. He never lost anything he just grew and changed .changeling .
I love the Doors for the very simple fact that they sound like no one else (which admittedly doesn't mean they're good, just odd) and their sound is remarkably evocative of an esoteric, dark mood. Their lack of polish tended to work in their favor.
Wow that’s interesting... I don’t know if they exactly sound like the animals but they are actually pretty similar and technically I would agree the animals are better
The first time I heard The Doors' music was a long long time ago, as a child. A child does not: 1 - have an opinion that is influenced by any external factors, 2 - understand concepts such as technique or poetry. To my untrained and naive ears, the sound of Light My Fire playing for the first time was such an intense and powerful experience that I still remember it. Why? Why would that song mean so much to me? Simple...I had no misconceptions tainting my perception, I had no clue if Jim Morrison was dead, living, ghost, a genius, I didn't even know what sex and drugs were or if they were famous or obscure. All I knew was that this music was a huge f* deal and felt larger than life.
Yeah, i remember the good old days of "itsy bitsy spider" and "London bridge", i mean "i had no misconceptions tainting my perception".... Jajajajajajaja
His cliche stick straight metal head hair pails in comparison to Jim’s lush bouncy curls. How are you gonna call JMs vocals cringe and be a gaping mouth soyjak for metal screamo at the same time. Smh
Dream theater's lyrics have never been BAD. They have always been either passable or good or even brilliant at times. It's only some of the later albums like black clouds or astonishing where some lyrics are cringy af but even those songs with stupidly direct lyrics feel very human and not contrived bs like the doors who think they're the best poets to walk on earth.
@ Synth Streaks I might be mistaken, but if you're listening to Dream Theater for the lyrics, you're completely missing the brilliance of their music. I'm certainly not saying that I disagree about Dream Theater's lyrics/vocals - that's a facet of their music which I find uninspiring. In fact, in my experience it's Petrucci and Myung that reach out and snatch onto my ear, forcing me to pay attention.
I personally disagree but I also respect for your point of view. Your ponits were honest and logical. You went through their catalog and wrote well structured arguments. It is clear that you prepared for that video really well. Disliked and Unsubscribed.
Its not a musicians job to give the audience what they want, its their job to give the audience what they didnt know they want. The Doors achieved this their success speaks for its self. Ray Manzereck was an amazing talent, and Jim wasnt a frontman he was a poet.
The fact that more than 50 years later we are still talking about this band means one thing: they left their mark, were authentic, successful & didn’t waist their time and others discrediting x to get credit..mission accomplished
Boomers had 10 bands to pick from and the radio never plays anything new, so yeah unfortunately we still need to hear that shrill light my fire cringe solo
I think if you’re discussing scales and technique while talking about The Doors then you’re completely missing the point. And critiquing Morrison’s lyrics when you’re clearly a Maiden fan? Dude. (I love Maiden too but c’mon man)
Thats not true. The Doors had technique. Johns Densmore Jazzy drumming was great, Manzarek is one of the greatest keyboardists of all time, Krieger's Spanish Caravan showed really cool stuff to it. So yeah you are wrong.
@@outis439-A That explains a lot why he sucks at drumming rock music. If you're a jazz drummer who stumbles upon rock music most of these guys are so light footed. Which is why you barely here bass drum on any of their garbage songs.
As someone who’s hearing impaired (deaf with a cochlear implant, with good speech due to getting the hearing device and speech therapy at a young age), it’s pretty accurate. To be even more precise, he sounds like somebody who can’t hear their own voice and thus has no baseline or feedback to go on.
@@denisepaulsenful Why? Please give a reasonable response as to why he is wrong, or better, why he deserves to be dragged through the mud because of his opinion. Please do.
@Shane Rene 99% of people here are rambling on how his opinion is disgusting Also, he didn't say that you could not like The Doors, he explicitly referred to who is offended by his opinion If he's being court in his expression it's because he clearly thinks the band is heavily overrated, which I kind of disagree with, not because the people who liked it I can see how someone could get offended in the sections in which he attributed their continuing success today to hippie grandparents telling their young how great this music is, and so on Obviously that is not the case for everyone, but I still find it to be an interesting point to make even for other bands which I quite enjoy
His "accent" and style of singing is what makes the doors such a great and iconic band, The Beatles has there own style and technique when it comes to instrumental and lyrics, a unique style that you do not like does not mean it is bad.
Frank F well yeah they are, you know it’s the doors when you here them, your not like “who is this”, unless you know nothing about rock, but you can very much tell it’s the doors
The Doors aren't about technique. They're about sex on the beach after you swim the sparkling trail the full moon casts on the water. They're about dancing in a hurricane as you listen to Riders on the Storm. They're doing 80mph to Road House Blues. They're 3AM on a rainy night after the bars close. They're about the long dark teatime of the soul (Thanks, D.A.) And that's why, 50 years after their heyday, they are still listened to. Take a 6-pack to the beach and listen to them again under the stars. And if you still don't get it - sorry, I can't be your guide.
Beautifully said altho this cauliflowered tin eared freak doesn't deserve your poeticism. His "part of me dies" prattle only makes me sad the rest of him lives. JM had the greatest voice in all of rock history to date.
@Captain Haddock Agreed. I think this guy is a huge JM fan and knows fine well his critique will anger The Doors devotees. I mean how can his moronic ramblings ever be serious.
I'm not really that much of a Doors fan either, so this doesn't offend me one bit, but a lot of this can be easily picked apart: Drawing heavily from blues? Pretty standard for their period of existence; I doubt you'll find much rock in the 60s that doesn't draw at least considerably from blues... Psychedelia, again, was another prevalent thing in the 60s, with a lot of acid rock and flower power hippie stuff going on, so you might as well just make a general criticism of the decade rather than single out one band... The same thing can be said of predictability, considering that only later in the '70s music made great leaps in songwriting with better technique development and bands wanting to expand and becoming more and more progressive... I don't find the guitar really impressive either, but this just reaffirms why Hendrix was considerered such a game-changer, because a lot of guitarists before him were actually quite awful, and Robby Krieger might have actually been better than a lot of them if you consider there are jazzier and darker passages that put them on a different direction from other bands... Awkwardness in the music is another partial truth, put this awkwardness to create an unsettling atmosphere was actually a counteract of the more in the clouds tree-hugging hippie crap that saturated the music of the time (if you want to say they weren't being efficient at it, that might be a bit more fair)... This brings me to my last point, which is the fact that if vastly superior musicians in the 70s at any given point were drawing inspiration from The Doors to create much better music, delving into territory that might have been considered unsafe, risky or even creepy before, then you can see why it has historical value...
Disagree Music isn’t a technique, speed or innovation competition. It’s a way to share the sounds in your head. The doors created a unique vibe that is genius!
I understand Mike's points, really. As someone who listens to a lot of prog rock and some technical metal, the Doors are an underwhelming experience. It's mostly simple, quite repetitive in some songs and overall "outdated". But as someone who enjoys music for what it is, the Doors are an extraordinary and very talented band. They were experimental, poetic, very diverse in their music with each album exploring different genres, fusing different elements into a single recognizable entity. Morrison's voice swiftly fits Krieger's gentle guitar licks. Technical? Not in the slightest but beautiful none the less. Ray Manzarek's mastery is more than note worthy. Essentially he was the bass player and soloist at the same time, allowing songs to have multiple sequences of guitar and vocal conversation alongside a percussive and smooth keyboard monologue while filling a groove that'd keep you locked in the song. Something that was very apparent in their live performances was their tendency to improvise in order bring a new experience for the audience, giving a damn good reason for their audience at the time to attend their shows. Those were the 60's, the people who listened to the Doors were into that and they simply fit the bill in all ways. Just like Slayer appeals to any fan of thrash metal in their aggression. You don't like the Doors not because they suck, it's because this music wasn't meant for you.
I know their music is simple, especially relative to more modern rock bands, but I believe the simple sound is something I like about their music as it kind of works with Morrison’s poetic lyrics.
Of course it's simple to today's music. What do you expect them to play Heavy metal back then screaming their head off. This youtuber is just a jealous troll who never made it. Getting views to hate on someone else's creativity is the farthest thing from being an artist. Does this guy even have music of his own. Because I heard him sing and it so cringe.
Dude the The Doors? I don't understand. You have to remember it was 50 years ago. They were far ahead of their time. If you don't think that they were sophisticated musicians check out Rick Beato - What Makes This Song Great - The Doors - Touch Me. Not to mention Ray Manzarek was a genius. He revolutionized the whole left hand bass playing thing. Many of the things he did are almost impossible to play. Try playing Riders on the Storm and you'll have a new respect for The Doors.
This mike guy just has a big ego. He talks trash about every other artist when he is below average himself. Lets not forget the fact that he looks like a crackhead.
I think that analysing the technical skill, of each musician a band consists of, not to be the best way to demonstrate that the band itself was, or not, a great one. When knowing your contents and your ideas, and under the assumption that you, self-ironically, call yourself “Prog Snob”, a visitor of your page gets a clear picture of your way of feeling and seeing music, or art in general, that is to say you attach great importance to technique/skill. But that’s not always enough, or rather, it’s not skill to determine how great something or someone is. Look at Jimi Hendrix! Purists of his time could easily ride roughshod over him, because he played in an unorthodox way, by not observing the standard way of playing guitar. And he was an innovator, who interpreted the cultural atmosphere of his time, and he is still modern. Though they did not have a particular skill on their instruments (Manzarek excepted), The Doors brought a new technique/style: a new different language. Their sound was their own only. They certainly took inspiration from their predecessors, and contemporaries, but the mix they created is absolutely unique, so it’s rather inappropriate, and superficial, that one gets to define them poor man’s Grateful Dead, or the combination of many pre-existing bands. The fact that you, as a musician, and a “prog snob” (I don’t necessarily mean that like a negative thing) cannot appreciate a band who is composed by instrumentalists who’d rather give importance to sound as an unicum, than to great skill, is absolutely legitimate, but there’s a huge difference between disliking and trying to demonstrate that the band you dislike was not so great as it seems. You named your video “Why I hate The Doors” and you listed your reasons, plausibly true according to you, almost objective, why they were not a great band. And you went so far as to say that many of their fans are musical ignorants, who don’t know what a chord, or a melody made as Christ commands, is like. I feel that, as frequently haters do, you gave reasons that are completely subjective, disguised as objective. Ok, John Densmore’s drumming sometimes is out of synch. Ok, Robby Krieger didn’t always come up with particularly original solos. Ok, Jim Morrison sometimes had a way of singing that was garbled. Then, I ask you: so what? If Densmore had flawlessly held the pace, if Krieger had developed better skill (actually, let’s be fair, most of rock artists in the Sixties had not much of a technique/skill!), if Morrison had sung in a more precise way, “on point”, would those same songs have had that magic we, Doors’ fans, poor common mortals, feel in them? If they don’t mean nothing to you, it’s alright, but to analyse a band in terms of skill only … Except for your personal reasons about technique, I don’t think that you proposed some more “progressive” arguments. I list you some of my reasons why The Doors were a huge band, one of the best in the history of rock, and music in general: 1) They were born in ’65 (like Pink Floyd), as a blues band (like Pink Floyd), “just” to develop, in a year and a half, a distinctive sound (think about those many artists who need years to get truly personal), totally different from the initial one, and, by doing so, they became a name to watch on the Californian live scene, with songs that combined blues, jazz, Spanish and eastern music, rock ‘n’ roll, and psychedelic rock, which, at the time, was still a “pre-historical” genre; 2) They published their first album, “The Doors”, in January ’67, before Summer of Love, before the explosion of hippie movement, of which they were not a part, in fact Morrison himself was very critical of it, recognizing the hypocrisy (or superficiality) behind it … and in that album, for the first time (or almost) they chose to include, at the ending of each LP sides, two “songs” that lasted more than 7 minutes, and in which there were tempo changes and a whole bunch of moods alternating (so, that album is what you might call a “proto-progressive album”). Grateful Dead recorded their first album in that very January, and they would publish it two months later, whereas The Doors had recorded the whole debut album in ’66. If there is any similarity, it’s because both bands were Californian, but Grateful Dead were more inspired by folk and country music than by weird blending with Eastern and Spanish moods; 3) Jim Morrison is one of the first rock frontmen who really emerged as an icon, adding the theatrical element, both in the lyrics and in live performances. Clearly inspired by Mick Jagger, Jim was, though, a cut above, because Jagger and Company would have never thought about writing a piece like “The End”, or to readapt a cabaret piece like “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)”, in a modern key, or to talk about reptiles or highways that look like snakes, about killers, unknown soldiers, or Indian summers, etc … Jim was the one who definitely brought mythology into rock, which became something intellectual, and not only a consumer item; if not the first, he was one of the first, along with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and Velvet Underground; 4) The fourth reason, that follows on from the previous one, Morrison’s lyrics were real poetry; even those that seem less profound were functional to melodies, and they are perfect when sung, and sung in that specific way; also take a look to his collections of poems … you don’t know how many compositions you will find, to prove that Morrison was indeed illuminated by something upper; it is obvious that, being part of a band, he couldn’t base a whole album on extremely cultural value poems; I guess that such an album doesn’t exist. I don’t comment on what you said about drugs, because, if that’s a reason why to hate them, well, it is a pretty shitty reason. As if The Doors did that kind of music because of drugs only. If anything, if they played some shitty concerts, it’s just because sometimes they took drugs. I’m sorry to break it to you, but The Doors were an extraordinary band whom, however, you don’t like … face it!
PaulGenesis he said why HE hates the Doors, not why everyone should hate the Doors. Will I say the Doors suck?Never ,but I find them boring along with the Beatles.
@@frankf684 Rush is the best prog band ever for me; incredibly accessible and catch tunes, but most of their stuff is just technical 4/4, and somehow I prefer that over plodding, boring 7/4 or 7/8 or whatever.
I feel like you don’t give enough credit for innovation, especially in context of when the music was released. You’d probably be more impressed if you understood just how creative they were compared to other bands of their time
No, he addresses that fact and while he didn't name any bands he did say that there were other bands at the time who were also sonically inventive and did it better. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Love, The Mammas and the Pappas, The Who, The Rolling Stones were all becoming more experimental by '66.
Sam Reynolds Even then, the sound they presented was original even with those bands around. Find me a song that is like When the Music’s Over, The End, The Crystal Ship, Yes the River Knows, Spanish Caravan, and You’re Lost Little Girl in that time from other mainstream rock groups.
The doors are my favorite band and yea I agree they’re not the greatest talent but I just love how they work together and made something different and special with Jim Morrison’s vision mane
@Art Antipop oh trust me I agree I hate that argument and never listen to virtuoso guitar playing bc I think its usually overdone and tedious. Just saying that, being a lifelong doors fan, I've listened to pretty much all of their live material that's out there and as much as I love Robby Krieger his performances lack a lot of the time and the band in general too often has trouble staying as one piece, but ofc most of the time I think they sound great. I don't think they are by any means amateur just that they aren't the most talented band. But as I said they come together to make something truly different and special imo. Ray is the exception tho he is probably one of the most talented keyboard player of all time.
Yeah, now we all have become experts and we can criticize one of the most legendary bands ever existed...the doors...are we kidding? Their music is haunting... Morrison's lyrics are pure poetry and his singing style is unique...sexy..and deep.. re-presenting his lyrics perfectly...
I hated the Doors and I kid you not I watched this 5 months ago and right after watching I loved the Doors cause you played some tracks that you thought showed why they were bad and I loved it and now I love the Doors. Also I play guitar and have been for a while now and I still like Krieger’s playing...
I have always hate the Doors also, even more today than ever. My reason is simply bc I abhore his voice & vocal technique, I don't like keyboards nor any of the slow, plodding music of that era. I agree they are enormously overrated. But I enjoy this highly detailed critique. That said, all taste is personal preference.
Jesus Christ! Are you ok dude? Who hurt you? We get that you are the most technical guitar player that has ever existed, I bet you are way more creative and musical than the legendary Doors
He was a poet who had a amazing voice, its deep and not high pitch like most bands today, I completely disagree when you say he tries to sound d a certain way when to me it cant sound more natural and amazing. His voice literally feeds my souls happiness and gives me chills. The music again I absolutely love, ray is so talented on the keyboard and keyboard bass, so upbeat and fast and I feel that the band as a whole although youd think would clash the styles, mixes pretty fucking perfectly to me. They sound perfect, they put on amazing shows, and look amazing, they literally have the whole package
Morrison said in an interview,.-I don’t really think of myself as a singer man I’m more of a screamer. For me, The Doors were still an incredible band and sounded great. They, were a unique and eerie sounding mix of blues, jazz, hard rock.
Jim Morrison had such overwhelming presence on stage and off stage; he had the x-factor so unique to him that nobody can ever copy. He had looks, he had moves, he had voice, he had the deepest soul, and he had brains. He was the total package. He will always be loved by many people in the world, regardless what jealous and clueless people say. Miss him so much.
I was literally thinking the same thing lol Jim obviously wasn't on the same level as Bob Dylan because honestly nobody is, but he was part of the same kind of revolution and innovation in music at the time, especially in American music. A person who can hate a band like The Doors, or any band for that matter, so passionately (very clearly because he doesn't care for the genre of music itself) is not really someone I want to hear talk about music.
@@tricko8000 not true. He only hates Nirvana and The Doors and somewhat AC/DC and Punk as a genre. And he does like a lot of blues primarily Texas blues if I'm not wrong and he likes Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam (to some degree) from grunge.
I honestly just think mike has poor taste in music. I think he understands theory and shit but just has bad taste. I mean billy Joel is one of his top ten favorite artists of all time. Yikes.
Well, if he cited the Doors as being crap on a musical level, then that’s not an opinion, is it? Opinions on music revolve around sounds and how they are perceived. If a guitarist recycles a blues riff excessively or a singer hits a bad note, then it is musically bad, and thus factually bad.
@@LordofDiamondsMetal eh sure but again it's how you perceive it. Daniel Johnston is technically very musically bad yet i love his music and how vulnerable it is. He had a following for a reason. Music is incredibly subjective, moreso than movies, and if people hated that music that was "objectively bad" we wouldn't have the Daniel Johnston's of our world and that to me would be a tragedy
@@LordofDiamondsMetal Clearly not, because I as well as many others just happen to like the music, as well as the vocals. I dove into their music without knowing anything about them at the start - no bias whatsoever - and I just like it. There's no reason to like it, according to you, but I guess this transcends what defines quality lmao. Just accept it, people like the music.
This is what happens when you only listen to metal and prog and become a hyper serious elitist bore who thinks music can be objectively rated on a scale of playing ability and technicality. The doors are just cool, it’s not that complicated
Its literally just prog rock elitist trash plus he's got a hundred ads. False sincerity. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he was racist. But as a doors obsessive i find it relieving to hear someone so unhappy with the music
I mean… are the Doors really even that straight forward? They have songs that feature bossa-nova drums, Latin organ grooves, and straight blues guitars, all over baritone poetry with some really aggressive singing mixed in (which went on to influence some of the most influential proto punk bands like The Stooges)… and that’s just the first song off the first album. The fact they were able to make songs sound simple while combining so many influences is a skill, not a hindrance
I’ve noticed that this whole “that shit ain’t that hard to play man” stuff typically comes from players that only focus on the technical side of things and not the composing side of things. Composing is a part of music too, and composing interesting intervals and making them fit into a catchy pop-ish tune is a massively underrated skill
mediocre? Yeah, that's why people love them. Their mediocrity. Not the conservatorium trained musicianship of Ray Manzarek. Not their indellible impact on music history. It's their mediocrity. You nailed it.
"I think we're the band you love to hate."...wer'e universally despised. "I sort of relish the whole situation" But why is that? Why are you the band everyone loves to hate? (Jim) "gee I dunno" we're on a monstrous ego trip and people resent it". "They hate us because we're so good" (laughs) Jim Morrison last Interview 1970.
He was aware of his image as some sort of preacher for people and he embraced it. Personally, I don't think it's something to hate if it's for a good cause like education or cheering up of people. He always called himself a shaman who helps with his music others to reach "the other side" meaning spiritual awakening. Very noble and beautiful mission, truly a religious experience. I think people still don't understand him and his band and the whole reason why the 60's were the way they were.
@@akosv96 break on through man break out if this matrix way of thinking you're all a bunch of fucking slaves he knew we are all sheep to the elites but that was before all that was all out in the open like now!
@@AvanRoyOfficial I dont think the Doors albums were in a competition with each other. And if you listen to the lyrics of Hyacinth House and changeling, you will hear of Jim's disappointment with the band and his intent to transition into something else (Rush Limbaugh ?).
This guy takes music to such a degree of objectivity that he's trained himself to no longer get any sort of visceral reaction to it. Instead, it's all about ticking boxes with Mike.
However, his critique is flabby; not objective at all--empty criticisms without examples to support his opinion. Clearly he dislikes the Doors and Jim Morrison, which is fine (and which I was interested to hear about). But referring to the music, writing, phrasing, lyrics, rhyme scheme, vocal characteristics, etc., as "awkward" 14x in 6 minutes does not a compelling analysis make.
Acinoralas Psychedelic Music?Pet sounds, and Freak out! came out a year before any Doors album.Sgt Peppers came out the same year.Ahead of their time in the 60s would be King Crimson in 69.
I get why people don’t love the doors fr, they got some mediocre songs but honestly I like Jim’s voice, I mean it’s not like his voice has range but I like the deep haunted like voice he has. My biggest gripe with the doors is when people act like they’re the greatest band ever, I like them, they have some good stuff, but they have some not good stuff to fr. Not saying they suck, I like them but I’m not gonna put them on a pedestal. They’re ok like them or hate them
Had me in the first half.... i'd say they get very easily the respect and admiration they deserve. You'd have to have verryyyy limited perspective to describe The Doors- one of the most popular bands of all time, as underrated.
What I think Mike is missing (horribly) is first, certain bands have certain chemistry. If a person attempts to dissect music too closely, the chemistry becomes invisible. Second, music often reflects an era, or an emotion, or politics, or an event, etc. I can't listen to much country or hip hop b/c of not being able to relate to the emotion or the events that inspire it. Stuff was happening in the world at the time of the Doors' heyday, and a mood that can't ever be seen again. Equally important is that all four members' musical backgrounds came from / were influenced by other types of music genres, which can be a vague term meaning many things to many people. However defined, it can be the birth / origin of a unique fusion that is best when unintentional, as with the Doors, and makes them UNIQUE, especially at the time. They don't sound like any musicians today, or any musicians at that time, even though Mike strains to find connections. Densmore's drumming comes from jazz roots. His time syncopation was varied and creative, and uncommon for the most part. Krieger's guitar came from flamenco training, and southern blues. Manzara's keyboards were a combination of a classical foundation, but I've always heard some jazz phrasing, in and of itself unique. Morrison's vocals were from blues, or expression of the poetry in his head, or from another planet, but unique, even if he was drunk and off key sometimes. Their writing went far beyond three chords. End of the day, Mike is entitled to his opinion, as we are all. I did listen to his entire presentation, and simply disagree. He hears stuff in Doors' music that I don't, and certainly vise versa. The most important thing that where I think Mike is wrong is that he seems to imply that they, the members, were trying to create a certain sound, and failing, according to him. I believe they were just playing what they heard, and were inspired to create, from their chemistry, and their groove, and as affected by their world. I don't think they formed to get rich - probably just to enjoy music and get dates, an old formula.
Best comment on here. The Doors were a band where the whole was greater than sum of its parts. Incredibly unique vibe + fusion. Trying to break them down individually as musicians is kinda silly imo
Dumb. The Doors and AC/DC are two completely different bands and in different genres. That would be like comparing steak to ice cream, two different things.
@@RockLibertyWarrior nah I can even compare different genres. It wouldn't be dumb to say rock is better than pop, though everyone's taste is different at the end of the day.
I think The Doors are interesting. Jim Morrison might be the first baritone to ever sing in a rock band. Robby Krieger was a flamenco guitar player that applied that style to Rock. Listen to Spanish Caravan and have your mind blown. They were unique when they came out. They weren't part of the Haight-Ashbury hippie movement. Their music was more Gothic and dark. Just about every rock band from the late sixties sounded the same. Love them or hate them, at least The Doors stood out. Everyone from Danzig to Type O Negative to David Bowie we're influenced by them.
As much as I love the baritone sound, and Morrison has been an idol of mine, since I was 13, I think Eric Burdon, another favorite of mine, beat Morrison, for first, great rock baritone.
The Doors have been my favorite band for over 40 years. I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, but you missed it on this one. It's not about technique - it's a vibe, and they had it. To me, every one of their (with Jim) records is as dead good as every other - remarkably so. Take "Soft Parade" for example, an album and a song that's a dead-on original and classic. To each his own, man, but you blew it on this one. Take a song like Maggie M'Gill. It's simple. I suppose you think the riffs are too 'easy 'and derivitive. To me, they're exactly what they need to be. I'm grooving on them right now.
I dont even agree every member had pretty good technique. Morrison included was a very good singer for a guy who never sang in his life. That wasnt his full potential, even at his skill at the time. Seemed like he had more range just never got the chance to do it.

The dude writes prog metal that's more straightforward and bland than 90% of even semi-prominent modern day prog bands I've ever listened to, while insisting in his YT videos that musicians that can absolutley play circles around him are mediocre. The guy blatantly thinks he's the shit, then invites people to argue against his opinions in the comments and legitimately NEVER responds to anything.

It feels like to you that a song is about displaying skill and technique when in actuality it isn't really that at all. Sure heaps of songs show incredible technique and skill on the respected instrument but The Doors were about making you feel something

Great explanation

Nonsense
No, this guy said the Beatles were "decent"...are you serious?
Of course it's simple to today's music. What do you expect them to play Heavy metal back then screaming their head off. This youtuber is just a jealous troll who never made it. Getting views to hate on someone else's creativity is the farthest thing from being an artist. Does this guy even have music of his own. Because I heard him sing and it so cringe.
You hit the nail on the head. Great response!
I find progressive rock severely severely underwhelming. disappointing and difficult.
Word!!!
If they don’t mean nothing to you, it’s alright, but to analyse a band in terms of skill only …
Except for your personal reasons about technique, I don’t think that you proposed some more “progressive” arguments.
I list you some of my reasons why The Doors were a huge band, one of the best in the history of rock, and music in general:
1) They were born in ’65 (like Pink Floyd), as a blues band (like Pink Floyd), “just” to develop, in a year and a half, a distinctive sound (think about those many artists who need years to get truly personal), totally different from the initial one, and, by doing so, they became a name to watch on the Californian live scene, with songs that combined blues, jazz, Spanish and eastern music, rock ‘n’ roll, and psychedelic rock, which, at the time, was still a “pre-historical” genre;
2) They published their first album, “The Doors”, in January ’67, before Summer of Love, before the explosion of hippie movement, of which they were not a part, in fact Morrison himself was very critical of it, recognizing the hypocrisy (or superficiality) behind it … and in that album, for the first time (or almost) they chose to include, at the ending of each LP sides, two “songs” that lasted more than 7 minutes, and in which there were tempo changes and a whole bunch of moods alternating (so, that album is what you might call a “proto-progressive album”). Grateful Dead recorded their first album in that very January, and they would publish it two months later, whereas The Doors had recorded the whole debut album in ’66. If there is any similarity, it’s because both bands were Californian, but Grateful Dead were more inspired by folk and country music than by weird blending with Eastern and Spanish moods;
3) Jim Morrison is one of the first rock frontmen who really emerged as an icon, adding the theatrical element, both in the lyrics and in live performances. Clearly inspired by Mick Jagger, Jim was, though, a cut above, because Jagger and Company would have never thought about writing a piece like “The End”, or to readapt a cabaret piece like “Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)”, in a modern key, or to talk about reptiles or highways that look like snakes, about killers, unknown soldiers, or Indian summers, etc … Jim was the one who definitely brought mythology into rock, which became something intellectual, and not only a consumer item; if not the first, he was one of the first, along with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and Velvet Underground;
4) The fourth reason, that follows on from the previous one, Morrison’s lyrics were real poetry; even those that seem less profound were functional to melodies, and they are perfect when sung, and sung in that specific way; also take a look to his collections of poems … you don’t know how many compositions you will find, to prove that Morrison was indeed illuminated by something upper; it is obvious that, being part of a band, he couldn’t base a whole album on extremely cultural value poems; I guess that such an album doesn’t exist.

Well, if he cited the Doors as being crap on a musical level, then that’s not an opinion, is it? Opinions on music revolve around sounds and how they are perceived. If a guitarist recycles a blues riff excessively or a singer hits a bad note, then it is musically bad, and thus factually bad.

@@shadowedlvnar1635 Sure thing snowflake
I had a 2 year stretch of my life where all I listened to was the Doors. I love them. I thought this video would be a lot more brutal than it was. I get that they’re not even close to being the most technically gifted band out there but they still had a huge impact on millions of people.
I think Doors are one of those bands where every member plays important role. Sure there is better musitians. But level of creative force between 4 was up in the sky. Energy this band had was for me much powerfull than any metal or hard rock band.
Incoming “Well I hate Dream Theater” comments
I hate racism!
@Mark G it’s now racist to say you hate a certain band?
Jon Vester Ig lmao

Seriously Dream Theater is just full of Guitar Wanking and the singer sounds like shit
But we all know this is just a opinion and doors songs are still very enjoyable
“Jim Morrison sings like deaf people talk” I’ve never heard a more inaccurate description of Jim Morrison’s voice....
I've always tried to figure out what it was about morrisons voice that irked me, and mike nailed it. For instance: the opening of "break on through".
This guy has no idea what he is talking about!
His lyrics were incredible.
More like the epitome LMAO 😂
