A wonderful trio of perfectly executed songs. Early Queen stuff doesn't get the credit it deserves imho.

It is is awesome that you played these songs together, they do belong together. I really all 3 songs, I think Tenement Funster is one of Roger's best songs, and Flick of the Wrist is great and Lily Of The Valley is really beautiful. There is a great live performance of Flick Of The Wrist at the Rainbow 1974, personally I think Flick Of The Wrist helps to explain some of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Flick of the Wrist can be seen as a precursor for Death on Two Legs on the next album Night at the Opera and is a dis of their management team at the time. Great reaction guys

It's part of a trilogy of songs. First two were about a shit manager who took most of their money. The third song was Millionaire Waltz . "Feel like a millionaire" when they got a better manager.

👉Tenement Funster - IMO Hippie rockstar who is unpopular with the con-formative, stuffy older people in his apt building. ☮️
👉Flick of the Wrist - “I wrote it as a tongue-in-cheek story about the con-men & rip-off artists we’re always running into. Our manager would like to think it’s about him, but it’s not.” (Freddie) ✝️
👉Lily of the Valley - The flower means “Mary’s Tears”. Song was written by Freddie & it’s about looking at his girlfriend & realizing that his body needed to be somewhere else (IMO Mary Austin). 💟

lily of the valley-there could be an element of that but that was Brians guess on the meaning Freddie didn't discuss the meaning with him so Brian doesn't actually know what it was about
looking at all the lyrics there could be an element but it seems to be more about over all acceptance and hate,is there time for peace..and the song follows flick of the wrist which is a very angry song about his manager,Roger said it was about the money but more that he didn't feel respected, the music industry didn't respect him either

Early Queen seems so complex musically & composition wise...compared to later Queen that seems streamlined., playing to the strengths of each band member. I almost feel like it's similar to studying classical music so you have the foundation and tools to make new music and discover your own sound.

Lily of the Valley in opinion is Freddie's inner struggles with his sexuality. Lily of the valley in Christianity is Mary the mother of Jesus, in this case it stands for Mary his girlfriend, he stays awake with anxiety over his sexual attraction to men, he loved Mary and didn't want to hurt her. The serpent of the Nile stands for Cleopatra, who was known to seduce which Freddie was seduce and moved to men. Mary didn't know of Freddie's inner struggles. Freddie eventually told Mary, but his love for Mary never ended nor her love for him. They stayed extremely close, and he called her his wife, left nearly everything in his will to her.

for someone who's believed not to read I think he loved Shakespeare!
'my kingdom for a horse' 'serpent of the Nile'
I don't think all Freddie's songs can be taken as a direct translation/reflection of his life, he said himself sometimes lyrics have meaning and sometimes they simply fit/sound good in the song
but I do think he reflects on real life but more the emotions of different situations then use them either in the song or as inspiration for a song but no longer has a direct reflection
this follows flick of the wrist a very angry song of how they but in particular how he was treated in the industry.
Roger said Freddie was angry about the money but it was more about not being respected that angered and upset him, these songs were about their management but he was also treated badly by the press and music critics.
so in LOTV it could still be holding that sentiment of being rejected 'forever searching high and low but why does everybody tells me no' still relating to the industry and part of that rejection was rejecting him because of racism and homophobia even though he wasn't out many saw him as camp and a lot had started calling him a Queen before they formed the band and was probably part of the reason he chose that name
but it could also tie into his feelings that he would be rejected because of his sexuality now we don't know for sure if he was gay or just chose to only have relationships with men after Mary, but Mary said he was gay and everyone who knew him did, some argue he couldn't be gay because he was in a relationship with mary and had a girlfriend before her, but a lot of men such as Elton identified as gay even though he was married to a woman
according to his previous gf he told her he also liked men but she does re tell the story differently in different interviews and her book so she's not that reliable
Mary also implied that he had told her he was bi then later was trying to tell her he was gay but she said it for him,in later interviews it comes across more that it was one conversation, a lot of things aren't very clear
I don't think Freddie really had an issue with being bi/gay but it was more upset about not being accepted by others and later on not being open properly with partners as his band mates could be with their partners
there was a lot of hate
but he was worried Mary wouldn't support him but she did straight away she said she wanted to see him happy
I think he did see himself as bi but realised he was gay or maybe thought it was unfair to be in a relationship with a woman
his previous gf didn't deal with it well
my kingdom for a horse- give up everything for one thing
wars will never cease is there time enough for peace
I think he was thinking more about general rejection/hate due to differences and not being accepted rather than it having anything to do with him accepting himself
serpent of the Nile- sex can be a relief an escape but it doesn't give much real comfort or meaning
lily of the valley-flowers believed to have blossomed from Marys' tears
didn't mean for this to be so long!
edit the industry rejection of him was about just about everything! they just took against him and they were quite negative about prog rock ..

@@bluebell3720 I read some quotes from his gay friends that Freddie never really felt comfortable in his sexuality, he struggled with it, I truly feel Freddie may have been a Pansexual, with hedonistic over tones, Freddie said he lived for sex, addicted most likely. Mick Rock, and even Peter Freestone in the past stated Freddie was Bisexual, but Freddie was secretive, multifaceted, very interesting. His early music does reflect inner soul at the time.

      Mary said he was gay
I can't find anything that Peter said he was bi sexual I only saw him say he was gay and had said that in interviews but people ignored it
Diane his designer said he was gay
I haven't seen anything that he was uncomfortable with his sexuality
I've never seen anyone suggest he was pansexual
yes he was hedonistic early 80s but that was after 4 failed relationships
during that time he was involved with Vince,Bill who was bad news and Winnie then Jim
      Brian is confusing
You know, he never hid the fact that he was turned on by men instead of by women. But strangely enough, I don't think it was always the case because I used to - you know, in the early days, we used to share a room
I don't think it was nice of him to say this he could have just mentioned Mary,he's not all that reliable with information they could have been friends,no one else is saying he was with lots of girls during tours
Brian has also said Freddie said I guess you realised my private life has changed (men) but this was years after it was obvious
Freddie was living with David in 76,according to John Reid he told Freddie to tell the band when he saw Freddie with David apparently he was worried they wouldn't be ok with it
brian said he didn't try to hide it and didn't care who knew

@@bluebell3720 I saw in a clip from a documentary, Peter and Mick Rock both spoke about the fact that Freddie was Bi. Peter put it as I said, if you had to category him it would be Bisexual. Mick just said he was Bi. Mary believed he was gay, but that's not what Freddie said. I haven't seen any interviews where admitted being gay, he wouldn't do that, he protected his family and band. Any way, Freddie was the one who knew himself, he alone has the say, and he said he was Bisexual. Freddie was a mystery, his Friends even said they really know him completely , Freddie was secretive, the Roger and Brian said the same thing, Freddie adapted to what ever he encountered, he was able to be what he needed to be at any given time. Today some people for reasons unknown can't except the possibility that Freddie was what he said he was, a Bisexual who preferred men. Gay, Bi, or straight, really, would it change anything, or how we feel about him? No, he was a wonderful special human, greatly gifted in everyway, and we were blessed to live in the era as he.

'Flick of the wrist' = signing a contract.
Mercury explained that the unpleasant character in the song was not based on anyone in particular: "I wrote it as a sort of tongue-in-cheek story about the con-men and rip-off artists we're always running into. Our manager would like to think it's about him, but it's not."

  • @bluebell3720

death on two legs was a follow up to flick of the wrist Freddie still didn't say it was about his manager but it very clearly was that they were sued over it!
flick of the wrist was double a side with Killer Queen no 2 uk no 12 US
lily of the valley wasn't released but very beautiful but sad song
nothing against the 80s except for a few of exceptions I prefer Freddies songs and vocals in the 70s

This was Queen's best album imo.
Queen could do many things well and one of those things was medleys. This is my favorite of theirs. I put their medleys on a par with the Beatles medleys.
As to Flick of the Wrist, I think it's like Death on Two Legs from a Night at the Opera in that it's about former manager Norman Sheffield who owned their music.
Queen was a great band. However, even though a Night at the Opera was a great album and made them wildly successful, I think they lost a bit of their edge after it and were never as good as with their 1st 4 albums. It is hard to maintain that level of quality.
