Nice...finally a channel that doesn't dwell on "look what I can do" but says "Here's what we can do". Thank you so much! Refreshing!
Thanks, dude! Just trying to give pinpoint instructions.
I personally agree with you. Buy I think a lot more people prefer the other kind it inspires them in the moment and doesn't remind them how much effort it actually takes to get to that point.
@@fionasimagination dam 30 sec ago lol
Imo it's much more useful when they tell me how they reached where they are now, so it doesn't feel like an impossible talent to learn
That’s not a good thing for them to prefer, because they’ll get motivated when they see the artist doing it but then when they actually do it, they’ll get stuck because they don’t know how to even get there
@rondolavino7778 Yes, I realise that. It is unfortunate...
I just want to let you know my son is in one of the elite art schools in the world and comes here to learn. Thank you for keeping him sane.
I’m curious what art school?

I would love to see how you texture clothing. Cotton shirts, Jeans, sweaters, latex etc.
I would also love to see how you approach these textures traditionally vs digitally.
Great video! I don't see many that focus on creating textures from scratch!
That would be a good lesson. Thanks for that.
@@bobbyrebholz2183please do it 🙏
@@bobbyrebholz2183 please do it ! =D i loved this one so much.
For cotton, I believe you simply must make crosshatches that follow your clothing’s shape, then, go over the crosshatches with a light, sharp eraser, then, you blend tiny dots of graphite onto the drawing, either that, or you use your eraser to make tiny dots on the shirt. For jeans, you do what you did with the cottons, but without little deposits of lint, maybe give it a slight bit more contrast. For sweaters, you shall blend in circular motions, make it as fluffy as you can, like a cloud. & with latex, you skip the textures, it is meant to look like rubber.
There are a couple students in a weekly figure drawing class that I take whose drawings have this sort of hyperrealistic textured quality to them, and I was completely bamboozled as to how they do it. While charcoal obviously differs in key ways from graphite, I am still glad I stumbled across this video, and I'll definitely try to establish a more robust foundation for my shading next time I'm in the studio. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
You're welcome!
I've been teaching this method to my students for months now (They are all older, retired folks) and I've been trying to get through to them on how to hold their pencils, both tripod and overhand, as well as filling spaces with layers of values in different directions, and scumbling (small circles) to create textures. They're slowly improving with their basic forms, but it's time for me to get back into MY passion...Creatures!!!
It's difficult especially if people learn bad habits from the start. If they're making progress, then it's a testament to your teaching! Seriously good job on that.
I'd like to see you how you texture water, seas, waves, ponds, lakes, all that jazz. I find it extremely difficult to make it look realistic, especially 'moving' water
Those are some great suggestions.
this is one of those times where i subscribe to a channel not because i think it deserves it, but because im compromising for not paying to see such high quality content.
Your art is so impressive. This is the type of video I've been wishing to find for a while now
Thank you so much for your channel and your thorough instructions. I’m at a technical college learning animation, but the program is more so focused on us getting familiar with using the digital art programs and animating, but we don’t really touch on “art fundamentals” so I’ve been looking online as much as I can to kinda fill in that gap and I just want to say that I can’t thank you enough for not only explaining you’re technique but WHY you do the technique and HOW your technique compares to what a lot of beginners do (the part of the video where you explain how to shade by keeping the lines close together versus the cross hatching thing beginners and myself included do)
Goodness, I feel so blessed to have stumbled upon your video! I'm a (really) bloody rookie, but I LOVE creature design and your tutorial is so full of valuable information and depth that it makes me just want to pick up my pencil and practice. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us! It means so much in times where a lot of art videos are just about the artists and showing off finished work and not about how it's done. Your art is incredible and I can't wait to see more of your content!
Thank you so much! I think you've found the right place
man, your work is simply stunning, this is by far the best tutorial on textures that I 've ever seen, great work please keep going
Thanks a ton!
I learn a great deal from this channel, so thanks a lot for these lessons.
Not just with pencil strokes but digital sketching with strokes has been a bit of my weakness.
Thanks, man. I'm going to keep a balance between the two with lessons.
I don’t usually watch art tutorials but I watched this all the way through and somehow made the best drawing I’ve ever done, thanks!
Thank you so much 😀 wow that is frickin' awesome!
It is astonishing what can be done, with a simple and inexpensive pencil and a piece of paper.
Can you show us a video on how light affects texturing and shadowing ? Also loved your passion towards drawing and how you respect it. Great explanation.❤
Great suggestion!
Thanks! I struggled with textures a lot, your explanation makes it very clear how to achieve good results.
Glad it helped!
Something about “I don’t know, I drew these 5 years ago.” Just motivated me heavily.
That's fantastic. Join our Discord, too.
Ha! I learned SO much about effective shading here in five minutes flat. Great stuff! Looking forward to watching more of this channel! 👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
Wow. I’ve been drawing for years and never saw this technique for pencil. I’ve used similar techniques for charcoal drawing, but this is brilliant
I’m a digital illustrator that has been trying to teach myself how to draw with pencil and paper nicely, and have had many questions very quickly and effectively answered even halfway through this video. Superb demonstration of the mechanical aspects of laying shadow down, I feel as though I have been given a series of revelations! Thank you!
Wonderful!
Would love to see you texture pearls, 1920’s kinda dress with the beads and sequins too! Any type of clothing really. Especially linen
Nice sketches, very well narrated, shading and texture is the key to any type of drawing, thats how basic shapes turn into form by introducing the texture and shades.
Thank you so much 😀
I just found your channel today and i’ve gotta say you inspired me to pick up the pencil again and motivate myself to create beautiful art much love 🩷🩷🫶🏼
That is awesome. Seriously, thanks for the sub. Keep sketching!
This is fantastic. This is one area of drawing that had always frustrated me. Your technique is a godsend. Many thanks for posting!
You're very welcome!
Beautiful, thank you.
Oh this video is such a gem! I'm recently getting into digital painting rocks and texture is where I struggle the most. I tried using texture brushes to ease the process but I find myself frustrated and unsatisfied most of the time since they look artificial that I end up manually doing everything.
When it comes to pen and paper texture is easier for me even though I tend to wing the techniques most of the time lol. This definitely clears a lot of things for me as I've realize I've been doing these techniques unconsciously sometimes (like values first then going back and forth with the details and value adjusting) however I fall into the pitfall of trying to rush too much.
After this video, I think I need to be really more conscious of how I apply techniques for textures. Planning and strategy in drawing and painting really goes a long way. You earned a new sub, keep up the great work!
That's great! It could just be small adjustments and your textures will be awesome.
Amazing thank you❤️I’ve been struggling with a dog portrait I’ve been commissioned to draw and you gave me great ideas for getting a few more depths of texture in its fur and nose😊🙏love your work! I’ll keep watching super glad I stumbled upon your channel❤️🙏
I think I found a goldmine of content. Thank you for your perspective and patience! Subbed
Welcome!
i live in california but am fortunate enough to get to travel to South africa for a month every year. So i really love and appreciate to see the Kudu and hornbill!!!
I have been trying to improve my animal illustrations and have always failed in textures. I recently saw your videos and applied your techniques and I definitely make it a different! Thank you very much🙏✌😼
Thank you for the lesson, sir
wow this is gorgeous
Sir, you just got yourself a new subscriber, please keep uploading and sharing your amazing art. In a world where artificial "intelligence" and the lack of talent and artistic sensitivity are trying to take over, there are still real artists left, capable of creating such wonderfull pieces of art with a pencil and talented head and hands
Thank you so much and I agree about the artificial art happening. We traditional artists have to stick together.
Firstly, I just wanna say your videos have helped me learn yes, but also motivated me and helped me find my confidence, so thank you. And for the question at the end, I'd love to see how you'd deal with fur as it's something I've been wanting to ask you for quite a while
Thank you! I was thinking of doing a video of how to sketch fur and feathers.
Wonderful, tutorial. As a portrait person human skin, beards, teeth (when to omit or include?) skin imperfections and wrinkles and fold, hair of course all inform likeness. Seeing your drawings and adding to them was e xtremely helpful…
Great suggestion!
Thank you, this pushed me forward.
You got this!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. We are fortunate you bless us with your gifts. 🙏😇☺️
You are so welcome
I got an iPad and i pencil for Christmas, I use a sketch app and hopefully can get a similar result to you with the foundation for the shading. Will keep you updated
Awesome, man. Just so you can feel the authenticity of actual paper, I would also practice on that because there really is a difference.
Aside from the awesome presentation, this was very relaxing to watch. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Absolute amazing artist!!!
His shading is absolutely GODTIER
Thank you!
I enjoy your videos and I try to do your training correctly. Thank you
This is so interesting. I was struggling with shades and texture. I found a helpful video to practice. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
It's interesting to see you turn your page to get a smooth undercoat. I can't do that since I have to draw in a very awkward position lying in bed due to disability. I just trained my wrist and eye to level out the tone painstakingly by eye. I've gotten faster at it with time. I adjust the pressure while I go over the spot in continuous motion.
I dont know why, but it felt so cozy while i was watching your video 😊. The way you explain texturing process and talk about animals with such soothing voice is kinda warming.
Thank you so much 😀
One idea I have for my future is paleoart or paleontology art so this is a very helpful video
Oh man drawing dinosaurs and prehistoric animals is a MUST!
What precious information! Thank you for sharing this. G-d bless you!
You are so welcome!
Insane in the membrane. Excellent work Sir.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great lesson. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Amazing lesson. After decades of focusing on guitar, I’m returning to my original passion of drawing / shading.
Welcome back!
Thank you brother. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thank YOU, brother😉
Some tree and leaf textures would be cool for next time! Or if you want to stick with animals, then maybe wing or feather textures. Thank you for your patience in really breaking all this down
It's not just going to be for creatures because I want to show the beauty of texturing in general. The cool thing is when you learn how to sketch bark, leaves, dirt, and rocks, all of that can be placed directly on animal drawings!
his trying to show how to shadow and texturing, so you learn the technique, its not about the drawing, its about learning.
Oh Wow I just found you. I am a fan right off the bat. Thank you I will be going over some more of your videos this weekend. I appreciate the video.
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi buddy, your artwork is stunningly beautiful, watching someone create art the "old school" way is so satisfying to watch, seriously if i can get my art to look even a fraction as good as yours then I'll be a very happy amateur!! I'm new to your channel so i shall definitely be checking out your other videos. One of my bad habits is going into a sketch too heavy handed, pressing too hard on my penciil....BUT I am starting to reprogram myself to go lightly at first and then go darker ( if needed ), it's not easy trying to break out of old habits. Two artists that I look up to are John Howe and Alan Lee, their subtle style of sketching & rendering their art says SO MUCH and adds so much character & weight to their art. Thankyou so much for giving us this opportunity to learn from talented teacher like you, i shall definitely be subscribing to your channel, we really need more videos like this, I wish you & your channel continued success.
Oh man, your message made my day. Thank you so much.
@bobbyrebholz2183 The Thanks is all to you Bobby, the wealth of knowledge that we can learn from you is invaluable, I never went to art school and the older I get the probability of me going looks more and more unlikely so anything I can learn from a great talent (like yourself), I'm there like a sponge, taking in every word & action and trying to improve the best that I can be.....I've already put in my order for some 4b & Black prismacolor pencils, I'm certain it'll be a game changer. Thankyou Once again Bobby, Appreciation Quote; " A Teacher Affects Eternity, He Can Never Tell Where His Influence Stops" Henry Adams.
really impressed! would like to see a tutorial on veins. i have never seen a demo on laying a foundation like this before
You got it!
Thanks for ur sharing. They are so beautiful…
Wow. Thank you so much! Wonderful tutorial and great way of teaching and actually showing what you are doing. Found it so helpful. I would definitely be interested in more tutorials focusing on fur texture, both longer and shorter types - like on cats. Thanks again. Will definitely be subscribing to see what you come up with next. (And sharing with some of my other artist friends.) 😀
You're very welcome! My next video is going to be about fur & feathers.
Yay! Can’t wait! 😀@@bobbyrebholz2183

Thank you so much 😀
Excellent video! Thank you!

I really enjoyed this video. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
You answered so many of my problems in this one video! Thank you
You're so welcome!
I love your drawing style. You done them with just a pencil and rarely or not at all using blending stick or eraser.
Thanks.
great class, just subscribed :3
Bro this video is a goldmine thank you❤
Glad you liked it!
Really well explained ...great teacher...thank you.
You are welcome!
Your channel is a gem, keep it up please!
Much appreciated!
Authentic!
Must have tutorial. Vrry useful.
Thank you.
Glad you liked it
What a masterpiece
This is great. Such a cool demonstration. Your drawings are fantastic.
Thank you so much 😀
I remember where I was when I learned that layering was much more effective than just pushing harder. LOL. I'm still really stoked to see you making videos on the regular, you have me thinking about how to become a creature concept artist. Though I imagine that is not the easiest thing to just, become. But, I am currently working a small side gig designing a creature concept for someone pitching a TV show. I'm taking the opportunity to treat it as if I was a full on professional creature designer, which meant doing some much needed brushing up on animal anatomy. Anyway, these videos have been great, keep it up! Cheers
Levi, thanks man. It really does feel great getting back into this and this time, it's permanent. I think it's just been life and a timing thing. That's awesome you're getting that gig. They're not easy but at the same time, it's so rewarding because seeing your creatures on the big screen is a thrill. Also really humbling.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 Life and timing are huge, especially the older we get. I am 43 thinking about getting into an art related field and really wish I had this drive for it back in my 20s, but such is life. Take advantage of it when you can. :)
I do have a slight amount of experience seeing my work on the big screen. Not a creature, but I did the initial concept art for the mask Ethan Hawke wears in the movie "The Black Phone". You're right, it's super rewarding. Also, it takes a whole team to bring it up to that point and that is to me the awesome and humbling aspect to it.
Hellooo, i am a french student in art since 1 month, and your video is perfect for me ! Thanks you !!!
You're very welcome!
Love it 😊
Thanks 😁
Thank you for bringing me back to using REAL pencils, instead of Technical or pre- points. Forgot my roots. EXCELLENT TUTORIAL!
Kudos, Thanks, and Bless You.
You are so welcome! Trying to keep it raw.
Just commenting because this is exactly the kind of content I've been looking for lately and the algorithm finally got it right!

Hi. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow wildlife artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad).
Just found you on UA-cam and after watching this first video, I immediately sign up to your channel.
Great realistic sketches and excellent explanation on shading different textures based on the subject (different animals).
Besides scales, fur and feathers (which are a bit difficult due to all the detail you need to make them look real), one type of texture I always feel a bit more complex is wet shiny skin and fur, like a hippo in the water bathing in sunlight or an octopus that's sticking out on a rock under the sunlight and all wet and viscous, for example, and specially to get the wetness effect right while managing the light reflections of the water on top correctly. That would be a GREAT video to see on how to apply the proper shading technique.
Again, thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge, and I will continue to watch the rest of the videos in your channel.
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎✌
Hey, Jim! Wow man thank you for subscribing and the kind words. You're now the second person to comment about a wet skin tutorial. That might be my next one.

Very detailed thank u so much❤❤❤❤
You’re welcome 😊
Wow, I've watched a lot of art videos and normally they are not very helpful. They will be like how to draw X and just ninja draw it without actually offering much. Usually the videos are more of a "look what I can do" video. This was helpful, can't wait to see more.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you.
i also find squinting helps to show the values, great video by the way
Squinting is a very underrated method.
Very nice. You should speak a bit about the theory behind rendering things. Like, there is simply drawing what you see. Which is excellent. But "theory" is knowing how to draw what isn't necessarily there, to better convey what is. Rendering the spikes more darkly at the tips is a good example. It's why a good painting can convey depth, atmosphere, movement and weight better than an average photograph. Even if it is not painting every little detail.
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome content! thanks for sharing
Thanks, John!
Thank you for this❤
Any time!
