- Matera - A Walk Through the Rock-Cut City. History, Views, and Unique Atmosphere 🏛️✨🇮🇹
Description:
Join me on a walking tour through Matera - one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the world! 🏛️🌿 Once forgotten, today it amazes with its history, unique architecture, and incredible atmosphere.
📍 Matera - A City Carved in Stone
Matera is located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, overlooking the Gravina River. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, with human settlement dating back to the Paleolithic era (around 10,000 years ago)!
🏛️ Sassi di Matera - The Underground City
Matera’s greatest treasure is the Sassi - ancient districts where houses, churches, and monasteries were carved directly into the rock. For centuries, the city thrived, but in the 20th century, living conditions became so harsh that Matera was declared the “shame of Italy” and abandoned. Luckily, its fate changed - in 1993, the Sassi were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and in 2019, Matera was named European Capital of Culture.
🚶♂️ What will you see in this walk?
🔹 Sassi di Matera - a labyrinth of cave dwellings, narrow streets, and staircases.
🔹 Piazza Vittorio Veneto - the main square with views over ancient underground water cisterns.
🔹 San Pietro Caveoso Church - carved into the rock, overlooking the Gravina Canyon.
🔹 Belvedere di Murgia Timone - the best panoramic viewpoint of Matera and its rock-cut architecture.
🔹 Rupestrian churches - unique cave temples filled with frescoes and historical mysteries.
Matera is a true journey through time - a place where history, nature, and culture blend into a breathtaking experience. If you love Italy, history, and stunning landscapes, this walk is perfect for you!
