I enjoy how emotional you get about the composition of a novel. It encourages others to care about how a story progresses and to stand back and say, "this really threw me."
I'm in two minds about them. I like the idea of them and how you can have a 1000 page novel in a little device but I just feel wrong reading a book without having a physical copy to put on my shelf! I'd use an e-reader but I'd have to also buy the physical copy of the book for aesthetic purposes.
I love the Mormon love affair part, but I admit I was soooo confused for so many pages... Because it doesn't tell you how it connects to the first part of the story so I was like, what?
It’s so funny that you didn’t like the “Mormon Wild West Love Affair” I thought it was the best part of the book. By no means am I a Western guy, but I was on the edge of my seat for most of those scene. There was genuine tension. On the other hand, Holmes is a caricature of an old timey detective as expected. You know he’ll get everything right, and will catch the guy so tension = zero.
I recently picked up a "Best of Sherlock Homes" collection of short stories for 1.50, and am currently working my way through them. They're quite enjoyable actually. As they're only short, there are no cuts to wild west Mormon love affairs. :D
I need to get into the short stories. I'm following the Penguin series in publication order so the next one I'm reading will be "The Sign of Four" which is another novel, but after that it's the short stories!
hey liked the review. I just read "A Study in Scarlet was curious what someone else thought about the mormon story that went on and on ..and on lol. But in the end i like the mormon escape story, even though i forgot i was reading a Sherlock Holmes novel.
I just could not get through the mormon bit. I just couldn't do it. Everything was going so well and it was so interesting but then it got to the mormon bit. I thought it would only last a few pages but no, It's about half the book!
I love this book! it amazed me how sherlock break down such intricate pieces of details & deducing watson lol I hope you can read some more of his works he's epic! xD
I remember being blown away by the very aspect of the novel that turned you off! Here in the States it's political suicide to say anything against the Church of Latter Day Saints so it was a real thrill for me to see that Conan Doyle "got" them so early on! Anyway, most everybody agrees that The Hound of the Baskervilles is the best novel!
I love your accent! But anyway. Yep I had it too, and since this isn't my native language and sadly I couldn't find any dutch Sherlock Holmes books, I had to read it in english, and it confused me so bad... it just... I couldn't wrap my mind around it, it was to sudden and too long... but I did liked the first part.
The thing is, it wasn't a Mormon love affair at all. The man and young Girl weren't Mormon but were saved by the Mormons and forced to convert. Then when the girl was older and fell in love with a non Mormon she was not allowed to leave and marry the man she loved instead was forced to marry another man. The other man it tuns out was the first victim in London. I too, was confused by the story's tangent into Utah, but it was necessary and could have been put in after Mr. Homes solved the crime to explain it. Since it was Watson telling the story he could have included that he learned all this later.
I have just finished reading the first part; I tried to read the 2nd part, but I can't get past the first page. It just doesn't make sense as to why he'd write it like that. Now, on the Granada series, Sherlock Holmes, with Jeremy Brett portraying this brilliant detective, I was wondering why he never acted in that one.. Besides the fact that it involves an animal being poisoned.. I wonder if he read it, and came to the same conclusion.. and decided not to do it.
I liked the Mormon love affair and thought it tethered with the main story arc very nicely.
But it was misinformed
It really threw me off with the mormon part, I was so confused.
I actually felt that Part 2 was a brilliant addition.
It's not a classic, but you should read The Night Circus (by Erin Morgenstern). I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day.

Keep this series going! Loving it. Can't wait to read these books you are recommending.

That's a good idea! I think I might adopt that jumper as my "book review uniform".

MJ Aich why won't you meet him ?
The structure and composition of a novel is as equally important as the plot.
I love this book! it amazed me how sherlock break down such intricate pieces of details & deducing watson lol I hope you can read some more of his works he's epic! xD
Definitely I'm gonna read it :)
I like this guy
I just assumed you were wearing your book review outfit. I expect you to wear it as your standard book review costume in the future!
The Mormon stuff was great. Was confused but very interested in where the hell it was going. An interesting choice.
I was expecting another wild west Mormon love affair at the end.

i love this book
Ok, I mentioned this already, but the Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake. There was a BBC series made of them, and it is surprisingly good. :)

Conan Doyle was a great critic of Mormons and especially Brigham Young.
