I played in the Chicago Staff Band way back in the 60's when this was a new number and Colonel Howard Chesham wailed all over it. (He was real good!) Happy to see it resurrected.
there better be no dislikes! this guy is amazing! I wish to learn from him!
More style back then, more sterile proficiency now, but not by much. It takes both to make a great performance. Howie Chesham was also a great man of integrity and holiness. His beautiful wife Sally got more press, but Howie was really in his own category of greatness, kindness, brilliance and humility. I'm glad I got to hear this number again, if only to reflect a few minutes on an amazing man.
This classic is by Erik Leidzen. One of the earliest recordings was by Canadian tenorhorn player Frank Moulton with the Winnipeg Citadel Band in the late 50's. He also recorded it with the Hollywood Tabernacle band a few years later.
Tried this once, not even close! Awesome!!!
Thanks for the video. I hadn't heard this solo in many, many years. It was recorded by Howard Chesham on one of the Chicago Staff Band's early recordings. A marvelous number.
Our Senior to go there, for different coursed...,bndmaster...etc...😊.
David is an incredible player live!!
One more before I go. In those days style was as important as technique, maybe even a touch more more. Howie had so much style, as well as great technique. He played this solo so well in both ways that it gave us goosebumps. His last note was so powerful it almost drowned out the band - stylistically speaking! Up on his tip toes often, to assure the greatest presentation. That seems to be the pattern.
Tenor horns rock!!
Ooo whose the cutie horn player sitting right behind the solost? 10/10
Best Tenor Horn player in the Salvation Army
Nothing like a horn solo
Tried this solo once and that last part always tripped me up, gave up after several tries
I remember playing this solo many years ago but not anything like as well as David.
Having a go at this at the moment having just moved from rep. cornet to tenor horn!
Not bad Dave!!!!!
This tune was written by Irishman T P Keenan
Someone needs to start the trend of listing the composers of these magnificent numbers. That's the hardest part of the equation but they get no recognition. I know - they do it all for Jesus, but then why list the soloist and the band/Band/Master? Just sayin'.
From 7:02 is where I found it so hard...
