  • **BREAKING BAD SPOILERS ** Unpacking Hollywood's inability to adapt literature without cutting corners, and the wasted potential of Daenerys Targaryen as a tragic hero. - Apologies about the terrible audio!
    / broeydeschanel
    - NOTE - I gloss over the Long Night in my hypothetical "tragic hero" situation because I am implying Dany's descent occurs before Jon approaches her. The show also proved that the Whitewalkers were never a real threat so I did not view this as necessary to include.

~ookay~ I'm just going to rewrite this comment to clarify the "slavery is economy" line for any future viewers of this video. My feelings when I wrote this were that slavery is bad (obviously) and Dany's intentions were good. However, I do believe that both in the show and in the books, Dany makes poor choices when it comes to abolishing the slave system that ultimately lead to utter chaos and destruction. If slavery is the predominant "economy" in slaver's bay, then Dany needed to create a plan to rebuild these societies once she has torn down their system. Instead, she abolishes slavery in Astapor and leaves behind a useless small council which is promptly dismantled by a violent insurgency. She abolishes slavery in Yunkai and in her choice not to sack the city it quickly re-instates the old slave system. She then conquers Meereen yet does not have a firm grasp on ruling. The three cities are now at war, Astapor is burning to the ground, (in the books) a bloody flux in quickly spreading, and slaves are now re-enslaved. (in the books) She makes concessions with the slavers in an attempt to restore peace, something she would never have had to do if she had just made the firm decision to get rid of them altogether. My take from both the show and the books was that Dany was a foreigner who did not have a strong comprehension of the depths of the slave trade and how difficult it would be to dismantle it. My argument is that she needed better foresight before she began her campaign in Slaver's Bay, and I think it's fair to criticize her for that. (PS. I'm sorry about the heinous audio, it makes me cringe too)

I think it's also important to acknowledge that good ideas don't just happen, just like bad ideas just happen. Things happen over time and no matter how good the intentions of good ideas are, it's impossible to not only create change overnight, it's impossible to enforce change and most importantly, it's impossible for everyone to immediately adapt to said change. People are stubborn and often will take the familiar over what they know is right. Look at people in abusive relationships, people will stay in those relationships far longer than anyone should tolerate just because it's familiar and they are already invested in the relationship, and starting over from scratch is daunting and depressing, so expecting multiple cultures to just give up slavery on a dime is a harder sell than anyone in the modern world would like to acknowledge. It's complicated.

Ultimately, Tyrion, acting on Daenerys' behalf, gave them what - a seven year buffer in which to transition the economy out of slavery, which the masters reneged on. Slaves aren't like Pokemon cards. They don't sit on a shelf and look pretty. They perform a function or service. All the Masters had to do was pay them for that service. If you can't figure out in seven years how to pay people a buck or two then get fucked.

From my very limited scope (watching your video is the most I've heard about her- didn't watch/read/discuss the series with anyone) it seems like this is a poignant white-savior story to show viewers exactly how bulldozing a nation's oppressive regime to "save" them is extremely problematic even with the best of intentions... but they ended up kind of not focusing on that??

The fact that HBO was willing to produce 10 seasons, that these actors were the highest paid actors on television, and that they cut whole storylines midway through the show to focus on the main storyline only to rush through one final season and call it two (13 episodes in the last two seasons as opposed to 10 per season) only for the episode before last to contain Daenerys's entire character arc is probably the most insane disrespect any artists have done to production. Like you wasted hundreds of millions of dollars and years of people's patronage, as well as a man's life work because you were bored instead of giving the reigns over to people who would effectively conclude the story. That's cockiness on a scale unimaginable.

Martin who is currently writing the books (I know, he may never finish it but things can happen), has gone on record to say the show needs an ending that makes sense as he felt the show needed to have 13 seasons to make it faithful to the books.

You would need a gradual process of her making impossible compromises that still align with those core aspects that neither her nor the audience could argue with, so slowly and subtly that's it's only looking back after its too late that we'd see how far she drifted. She would always need to be believing that her actions were for the greater good, were for the betterment of others as a whole. Her entire story would've been about the question, do the ends justify the means? Or do the means create the end? Her conclusion that "the entire world is under chains, needs to be freed and she's the one who can free them" is still aligned with both compassion and divine right, but it's the "so the answer is genocide of all I see as enemies because I am the sole moral entity" conclusion that was rushed, botched and dumped on us from no where. I believe that even if they fleshed out her descent to madness it would have felt wrong, like the easy way to finish her arc( her father was mad so she got mad) what the video is proposing makes so much more sense to me , making her a tragic figure realising that her intentions being good isn't enough to break the weal , that she was naive to believe that she could change the world. That would subvert our expectations of her becoming the perfect queen that her all her people love, making her realise what she has become, that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Making us sympathize with her, that would have been so powerful and grounded in reality as this show used to be. Sorry for the big speach. I just loved Daenerys and i believe any fan would have written a better end for their favourite character than dumb and dumber did.

@@0802alexander : I don't think the video got it right either. I suspect that the contrived ending was about as cynical as one can find (though strangely aligned with much in the traditional media), sending a deliberate message not to trust or have faith in anybody or anything (including some scary eugenics: a Lannister is always a Lannister, insanity is hereditary, there is no redemption). Despite the fear that evolved of actually liking any of the characters because they'd quickly be killed off, there was nevertheless a sense that something decent, admirable and worthwhile was building in the face of great adversity. And in the last season they destroyed it, killing off or reducing the stature of almost everybody we had invested our hopes in. The one untainted figure, Sam, was ridiculed for suggesting democracy - how cynical is that - and we were left with a committee reminiscing over their boozing and whoring days! Basically, back where the whole thing had started, almost full circle (to keep this short I haven't gone into detail, but you can see the pattern)!

Throughout the entire show the idea that Dany wants to avoid harming innocents has been brought back over and over again, so to end the show with her killing thousands and feeling no remorse for it simply because she ‘went mad,’ makes no sense for her character. However, if you just end slavery and don't have another system to put in place instead, if slavery is what the entire system runs on, you'll have another problem at your hands. Of course, it also depends on what kind of tasks the slaves had. If some of them were teachers or even part of the old administration, it might work. But if they were all just workers and servants, and suddenly they get put in charge - well. They might mean well, but that might not be enough.

Actually, I personally thought the whole anti-slavery crusade was one of the few things about the GoT story that really showcased GRRM's Americaness. Nowhere else in the world does the topic raise nearly as much heat as it does in the US and I hate it when in American-made fiction knee-jerk opposition to slavery is heralded as some sort of pan-human paradigm (they did the same in Mass Effect) that every single member of mankind gets absolutely axe-crazy over. Many people in Europe had their ancestors abducted to serve as slaves at Muslim courts and nowadays regard this simply as a historical fact that happened.
Americans just write what they know. That's why they had zero issues making a show about a Nazi-occupied America but shivered at the thought of a Confederacy that survived until today. Then what about the rest of mad Targaryens? The one, who drank wild fire (don’t remember his name, sorry), even Viserys wasn’t completely sane, and as I remember whole dynasty was famous of their madness caused by incest tradition. Tbh, when incest enters the chat, there’s almost no possibility of not being mentally or/and physically ill (especially when it’s constant practice in your family, holy...). It’s just not natural. Joffrey Baratheon, who also was conceived by incest, was as sick as Targaryens. It all makes sense. I think, Aerys actually WAS mad. Theory about this Three-Eyed Raven is currently just a theory and will be, until George R.R. Martin won’t confirm it (I wish he won’t, haha). I don’t believe it much, maybe because I kinda like the concept of this unpredictable, insane family of magical origins, my favourite GoT house by far. 🐉🔥 I would be disappointed, if this theory was confirmed as true.
Also, I see vividly that Daenerys was slowly turning mad from the very beginning of the show and the book too. Remember her reaction, when Dothraki was killing Viserys, and after his death? These eyes... and fact she wanted to look at her brother dying in torment... if you think that was normal act, then I have no questions. Gradually, season by season, her decisions and act was more and more irrational, strange and crazy. I agree that she needed more character development and time to finally turn into personification of insanity we have seen in the last season, it was far too early, what disappointed me hardly, but I kinda knew it from the first season... she was designated to end like that.

Yes, maybe she was destined to be insane in some point. I personally don't see it, but absolutely understand the points of someone who does. I just don't find believable that she, given her past and all she has done for innocents and underprivileged, would ravage an entire city after the surrender, even if done with proper character development.

    S02E05: The Ghost of Harrenhal
JORAH: You have a good claim. A title. A birthright. But you have something more than that. You may cover it up and deny it, but you have a gentle heart.
You would not only be respected and feared, you would be loved. Someone who can rule and should rule.
    S03E03 - Walk of Punishment.
JORAH: If you want to sit on the throne your ancestors built you must win it, that will mean blood on your hands before the thing is done.
DAENERYS: The blood of my enemies, not the blood of innocents.
S05E01 - The Wars to Come
DAARIO: You're not the Mother of Unsullied. You're the Mother of Dragons.
DAENERYS: I don't want another child's bones dropped at my feet.
S03E07 - The Bear and the Maiden Fair
DAENERYS: How many slaves are there in Yunkai?
    JORAH: 200,000. If not more.
DAENERYS: Then we have 200,000 reasons to take the city.
    S07E02 - Stormborn
YARA: If you want the Iron Throne, take it. We have an army, a fleet, and three dragons. We should hit King's Landing now, hard, with everything we have. The city will fall within a day.
TYRION: If we turn the dragons loose, tens of thousands will die in the firestorms.
ELLARIA: It's called war. You don't have the stomach for it, scurry back into hiding.
TYRION: I know how you wage war. We don't poison little girls here. Myrcella was innocent.
ELLARIA: She was a Lannister. There are no innocent Lannisters. My greatest regret is that Oberyn died fighting for you.
DAENERYS: That's enough. Lord Tyrion is Hand of the Queen. You will treat him with respect. I am not here to be queen of the ashes.
OLENNA: That's very nice to hear. Of course, I can't remember a queen who was better loved than my granddaughter. The common people loved her. The nobles loved her. And what is left of her now? Ashes.
    S07E05 - Eastwatch
DAENERYS: I know what Cersei has told you. That I've come to destroy your cities, burn down your homes, murder you, and orphan your children. That's Cersei Lannister, not me.
I'm not here to murder, and all I want to destroy is the wheel that has rolled over rich and poor to the benefit of no one but the Cersei Lannisters of the world.
    S07E06 - Beyond the Wall
TYRION: Nobody trusts my sister less than I do, believe me. But if we go to the capital, we'll go with two armies, we'll go with three dragons, and anyone touches you, King's Landing burns down to the foundation stone.
DAENERYS: And right now she's thinking of how to set a trap.
TYRION: Of course she is. And she's wondering what trap you're laying for her.
DAENERYS: Are we? Laying any traps?
TYRION: If we want to create a new and better world, I'm not sure deceit and mass murder is the best way to start.
DAENERYS: Which war was won without deceit and mass murder?
TYRION: Yes, you'll need to be ruthless if you're going to win the throne. You need to inspire a degree of fear. But fear is all Cersei has. It's all my father had And Joffrey. It makes their power brittle.
Because everyone beneath them longs to see them dead.
FYI. After I posted these quotes on a GOT fan website all of the deniers had nothing to say. lol.

Jon became Daenerys' puppy for the last season, with crappy and repetitive dialogue, like they didn't know what to do with him. His whole character was built up around the white walkers, and then Arya deals the final blow? He didn't even do anything useful in that battle. His secret lineage storyline amounted to nothing other than serving as a plot device to drive Daenerys insane. He just stood around doing nothing for the whole season until the time to kill Daenerys finally came, and then he was exiled to the wall for whatever reason. As for Tyrion, he was basically a dumb side character during these final seasons. One of the most interesting characters in the show and they did absolute shit with him. He had no arc, he just stared judgingly at things. Please don't confuse surviving with having good endings. Others like Jaime, Varys and the Hound all had underwhelming and disappointing deaths. Everything about the last season was wrong... I mean, can we talk about how Cersei was a bigger villain than the Night King? And we knew Dae would die, it was predictable - there is no place in Westeros for dragons, we just didn't know how it would happen - as a warrior? a hero? a sacrifice? or murdered because of her actions or because of her lineage? The way she was killed off made zero sense, just because what she did prior to that moment was completely out of character. In the last few moments of the battle - Cersei was the good one?? Telling me that the nobility of Westeros were right to back her up instead of Daenerys, just because she's a Targaryen and was raised across the sea. And then the Dothraki multiplying (I thought they all perished during the Long Night that lasted a few hours), and no one in her army decided to slaughter the entire kingdom just for revenge? Are you telling me that Grey Worm would not master them all up and fight the entire continent until he drops? Everything made zero sense. Last season is trash. It's null and void. It's not canon. I accept deaths, I accept loses, Dae wasn't even my favourite character (it was Baelish, they did him dirty too, don't even get me started on that one), Arya fucking became a Xena Warrior Princess with no flaws and mad skills which she doesn't even use to kill the Night King, she just spider-mans up in there instead of using the face-changing skill, none of the dead could see her, smell her, witness her... I could write an essay about everything that they fucked up.

(If you free all the slaves, you better have a plan for all that major economic restructuring.) So a downfall that involved her doing the right thing without thinking through everything it would cause could have given her an amazing downward arc. But instead she did genocide for shock value.

Hell yeah. I always viewed her vision at the House of the Undying as a clue to how she's going to end up. Blindly bulldozing to get power, getting people killed along the way and then realizing just how badly she messed up and redeeming herself by giving up the throne (as per vision) to sacrifice herself for the people in the fight against the WW. That would have been full circle and perfectly in line with her character instead of the garbage we got.

D+D rushed the end to move on to Star Wars, and because of the outrage they actually lost that deal. That's what i call instant karma. These incompetent writers really need to pay for what they did, first to R.R Martin and second to the most loyal hardcore fans a show has ever had. We can't forget how they butchered Game of Thrones. Still to this day i haven't seen the last two episodes, to me that's not the end, it's just a joke, as the whole season ( i can forgive season 6-7 even though they don't compare to the quality of the first 4 or 5 seasons).. I'm just waiting for the book and Martin can take all the time he needs cause i know it's gonna be awesome.Daenerys was the one i stood behind from season one and i got betrayed. She got betrayed and i was so mad. I honestly never thought I'd feel like this about a show but they knew the way we fans loved it and they knowingly let the cast, the characters and us down like it was no big deal and then called us trolls and immature. Great video and indeed great audio.

My personal theory is that the Targaryen madness was never caused by their blood, but rather their position of power.
“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men”.
Daenerys being the last Targaryen ruler and ultimately becoming corrupted herself, will play nicely into the underlying themes of A Song of Ice and Fire. The corrupting tendencies of power would also explain why almost all the “mad Targaryens” has been men: Women, even firstborn, where never first in line to inherit the Iron Throne, so naturally, most in positions of power were men, and were therefor corrupted by it.
I’m really looking forwards to reading Daenerys’ story the way George intended! I’m a sucker for tragedies 🥰

    • @hekate5561
      @hekate5561 3 роки тому +15

Let's be honest, the only truly mad Targaryen was the one who drank Wildfire.
There was one who was just intellectually disabled.
Baelor was overly pious, but piety isn't madness.
Maegor was a slightly more hands on Tywin.
Aegon the Unworthy was a slightly less restrained Robert.
Aegon the Unlikely had great plans to give more security and power to the people, that were very unpopular among the nobility, but unlike Jaeherys he didn't have dragons for that extra protection from a rebellion. And yes, the rebellion was braving even then.
Aerys, while being somewhat paranoid, only crossed the threshold after being betrayed, imprisoned and tortured for months.
Viserys and Helaena as well were broken by life.
I am quite sure that that coin-bullcrap was mostly post-war propaganda. They couldn't pretend that everyone was mad, since too many Targaeryens were part of legend by then, so they settled on a phoney 50% chance by pretending that getting a sane king out of that dynasty was only a matter of chance, which it clearly was not. Like with every other dynasty you get some good ones, some useless ones, some cruel ones and some deranged ones sprinkled among the unremarkable one.

I always expected her end in the show to be tragic in some way, because that’s the natural fuckery of how they operated, but I never expected them to hustle her along to the ending they gave us. If they were going to go with that ending, they really needed to let it breathe and pace it to that end. The minute they decided to chop the show to 6 episodes for the final season, the fight with the army of the dead should’ve been the ending.

man that first seen where she takes unsullied and becomes the peoples Mysa was so good. take me back to a time when Daenerys was a terrifying bad ass if you where her enemy. That was an epic season.
when Geora mormut (srry hacked the name) even says around that time. "you didnt conqure them, you liberated them".
That spoke volumes. I thought that would be her way now.
when she finally made it to westeros, thats what she would have done. broke the wheel, freed them from the politics of westeros, and moved on. like her whole thing at that point, i thought, she didnt need to wear a crown. thats the westerosi way. not her way.
I even thought it would have been cool if she DID just stay in essos, created a new valeriya. that would break the chains that way. and give full circle meaning to her names. like westeros was her chains that was pulling her back. everyboby expected her to return. like if she was the reverse of Agon the conquer.
I thought it would have been a great subversion if she broke away from that dream an carried on making great things out of nothing.
That was her charater to me. in the earlier season anyway. In my "fan fic" lol she never leaves essos, it just didnt make sense after her trials an tribulation to go back.
or even have the same plight with white walkers that john had, but throught the grey waste, but they are called something else in the east. have her return to westros the total oppostie way you wouldnt expect. like some how the north and the east are connected and you have fire and ice meet that way.
dont even get me started on how they totally screwed Euron greyjoy as a character. he was like a all knowing pirate/ worlock/ green seer with crazy connection to the old gods. who also seen the entire world on his travels. damn i would have loved to see that go some where.

Dany's father was cruel but before he went mad he was taken prison, locked up in a dark cell with no light and tortured for months before he was rescued. That drove his cruelty to the boundary of madness and started burning everyone with wild fire. That's the way we wanted it to happen. A sensible and logical way to push the character of Dany to leave all her beliefs from season 1 to 7 behind and turn dark. While the betrayals and death of her loved ones were heartbreaking, it wasnt presented in a way that would outweigh everything she stands for.

While I really enjoyed your analysis of Daenerys's character and inclusion of Aristotle quotes regarding tragedy I think you give too much leeway to GRRM. The fact is that GRRM hasn't done anything with this character in 20 years. Nothing happened in Book 5. Daenerys is narratively in the exact same position she is at the end of Book 1. DnD deserve the bulk of the blame but GRRM's refusal to work with them as a team to finish the series or to buckle down and write the series himself is part of the issue.

Yes, you're right on . The tragedy is not that the ending was so underwhelming ; it's that it should have been just so good!
The catharsis you speak of when a hero sees their folly too little, too late...thats powerful in say a movie or a novel or shakespearean play.,but had they managed it right in GOT 's TV, we would have had 8 years of tension build up, all released in the climax. It would have outmatched Ned Stark's execution and the Red Wedding combined! And it would have been in character of GOT 's, the final tragic twist that suckerpunches us like the first two did!
I'm just so glad that George gets to set all of this straight in the books. I just pray that he lives to finish them, because if the TV series has shown us nothing, it's that none but George can write this right!

To be honest, I'm not entirely certain that the show runners did waste Dany as a tragic hero. For one, they had over-run the written material they had (and that is a whole other ball game in my eyes), so all they had to work with was whatever GRRM had told them of how he saw the story going. True, it is perfectly clear that they got bored with what they were doing, excising large chunks of the books in order to finish up the project, not only because they were bored with it, but because the viewers kept howling for more, when there was, literally, no more story to follow. We seem to live in a culture that wants whatever it wants NOW, (patience and self restraint seemingly dying characteristics), and in that respect, we are as much to blame as Hollywood for 'cutting corners'.
Daenerys, along with her naivety , and insistence on forcing her own views, opinions and ideals on the people she meets, also suffered from another, external, issue. She was constantly given advice which, if not wrong, certainly re-enforced aspects that should have been downplayed. A blinding example of this happens when She meets Olenna Tyrell, who, after telling her she's known many intelligent men in her life, and she's out lived them all, then tells Dany that she 'Is a dragon. Be a dragon'. Time and again Dany is encouraged to stamp her will over everyone she meets, and anyone who refuses is to be killed on the spot. There is no-one around her who can speak up and call her to stop and think before she acts. We see this time and again in the real world where someone in power becomes a despot because either no-one is there, or is prepared, to put the brakes on.
I will not be all that surprised if ASOIAF ends in a similar fashion to the show: I've got a very strong feeling that whilst Daenerys might get to Westeros, she will not end up with the Iron Throne. Just how the story plays out, however, may be very different. This will be because GRRM will have written it: unlike the show runners, whose talents clearly aren't in writing, either books or show episodes. I do, however, expect that we will get misdirections galore, misdirections that will actually make sense of the last season of the show. It will certainly do what the show runners tried to do and failed at.

I suspect you are wrong. Dany is a classic Tragaryen, better at conquering, via fire and blood, than ruling. Her gut reaction is always to burn her enemies to the ground, regardless of whether that involves civilian deaths or not. Her advisors often talk her out of it, but that’s who she is without that advice. She’s Genghis Khan, there are a thousand parallels between the two.

Anjelica Snorcket I didn’t say anything about her family being mad. Did you reply to the wrong person by accident?

the thing is if they wanted dany's character to fall it would have been huge if they actually got it right. SO many people loved dany and emilia was extremely popular with the fanbase. it would have been heartbreak and tears and people would talk about it the way they do the red wedding or ned's death, but instead you only hear it talked about with disappointment

What’s interesting is that Daenerys burning the red keep causing wildfire to detonate across the city was in the original script for Season 8. D&D changed at the last minute for shock value unfortunately 🙄

Yes, true, if only all GoT fans would know this, this like the strongest evidence she wasn't meant to go mad
